Coming from pharmaceutical, could not be more simple ,user friendly and robust information. I am following his advice, intermediate fasting 20 hours, cut all carbohydrates by 90% (eating some beans), being vegetarian, exercise 5 days a week 45 to 90 minutes, lost 15 lbs in 67 days and I measured my glucose today, 1.5 hour after lunch was 99. I stopped my statin too. Women at 65 and I have been diagnosed as glucose resistance. Hope it helps. Dr. Cywes, Greatly appreciate all your medical advice.

Dr. Cywes, Thank you for all you do to educate us T2Ds. 4 months ago, I did a blood panel after 6 years and discovered I had Type 2 with a 7.4 A1C. I refused meds and overnight, cut off all sugars and carbs (Minus the minimal carbs in salads and none starchy vegetables). Today, I eat a Kitovore diet and have dropped my A1C to 5.5 and lost 25 pounds. I test my blood 4-5 times a day and it's averaging around 109 for the last 90 days. My question is this: Due to Dawn Syndrome, I wake up with about a 125 glucose level every morning and it goes down to around 102 by the end of the day and meals. I do two meals a day and intermittent fast for 16-18 hours average. If it were not for this one high morning glucose level, my glucose levels would be much lower. So, when can I expect to achieve 'normal' morning blood levels or is this it? Also, I left carbs and sugars and never looked back, but I miss proper nigiri sushi...Can I eat some rice with my sushi every 10 days without glactating my blood cells etc...? Thank you again for all your education.

If I eat carbs at all it is a salad or what is in eggs or cheese. I have been eating meat and eggs with an occasional salad for almost 3 years now yet I still cannot get my blood sugar to be consistently below 100. Sometimes it goes to 97, sometimes it goes to 120. I wake up it's at 130 sometimes. What else do I do? I DO NOT eat sugar and starch. I do not eat until 2 or 3 in the afternoon and I only eat 1 or 2 "meals" of meat, eggs, butter, and cheese. I do not drink alcohol. I do not smoke. I do not eat sugar. So why doesn't it go down? I lose 10 pounds per year. I'm going nuts!

I’ve had diabetes for over 30 years ago. Last year I discovered keto and carnivore. I initially lost about 35 pounds, but I am still overweight at 200 pounds. And I am still diabetic although I am off some medications. I mostly eat as close to zero carbs as I can. But I sometimes get so frustrated that I will pig out on potato chips or ice cream or M&Ms which sends my flood sugar to 200 or 300. I am still on insulin, Lantus Solostar, at a low dose, 10 units daily. I would like to get off it but I don’t know what to do. My average blood sugar is still over 100. What should I do? My doctor is no help. He would have me taking more meds.

I take a few issues with your very interesting video. 1. You repeatedly say we should consume zero carbs. I have not seen you speak about nuts. Do you suggest zero nuts on a lifelong keto diet? 2. I have been keto two years. I recently stopped watching the scale and I put on ten pounds. My fasted blood sugars crept back above 5.5. Is it not possible to eat excess protein on a keto diet, elevate blood sugar, and gain weight?

Great info. But what can you suggest for those of us who are "skinny type twos"? I was diagnosed 10 years ago (at 51) and my average A1C is 5.6 throughout (tested every 3 months, only hit 6 twice, never over). BMI has ranged between 20 and 21. No meds and no addictions, only a strict low (to very low) carb diet and plenty of exercise. Moderate to low glycemic foods as well. No chemicals and no HFCS either. No sweets and no added sugar. No pasta, rice, potatoes, etc. Absolutely 1 (one) beer a day before bedtime, along with a handful of lightly salted nuts (cashews, almonds and pecans).

When I was a younger person in grade 9 of high school nearly 40 years ago, we had health class. Unsure what it has evolved into today with the crazy defunding of the public education system, but it is this forum where good health practices and prevention education should start with today's modern knowledge. We know with what public school's feed our children during the day that they are not providing good nutritional education. The US has decayed into such a horrible state of affairs with regards to health, the healthcare system has become overloaded with chronic diseases. Patients with non-life threatening acute conditions find difficulty getting appointments with their PCP in a timely manner and are forced to go to an impersonal acute care clinic or and ungodly expensive ER visit only to get triaged to the back of the line. It's insane. If I knew 10 years ago what I know today from providers like Dr. Cywes, it would be unlikely that I would be T2D today. The practice of prevention is good medicine. Thank you, Doctor Cywes, for taking the extra time in getting this information out for the people to hear.

There is a channel called "Mastering Diabetes" here on youtube where they maintain that eating a VERY LOW FAT plant based diet will increase insulin sensitivity to the maximum, and with exercise will enable people to put type II into remission and greatly lower in insulin needs of type I diabetics. They apparently eat TONS of carbohydrates and are getting on fine. I don't know what to believe. They have a book coming out soon. Anybody else heard of this?
@mdrobnson3912
@mdrobnson3912 4 года назад
Yes It's true. There is evidence that a low fat, HIGH carb diet works. At least for a while. The main issue here is BOTH high carb and HIGH fat. Too much fat will increase insulin resistance, per the Randle Cycle. The reason it doesn't happen on keto is very low carb. It's excess that's the enemy. If your eating high carb and high fat, then both glucose and fat energy potential is high and the two after going to compete to be metabolized. Glucose is the bigger threat, so glucose will win and fat well be stored rather than burned, and excess body fat is toxic. In body cells, insulin helps usher glucose inside. Insulin resistance makes this tougher. In fat cells though, it works the opposite, insuln keeps the gunk locked away in fat, inside. But when you're insuln resistant, it can't keep the door locked and the gunk leaks out. As for plant based Eh It's not for me I don't think it will hold up. If we simply look at nature, we see intent via equipping. Humans have teeth that crush and grind, for plants and teeth that rip and tear, for meat. In history Humans ate meat They ate plants when they were available and there were few places then, where plants were available all year. Humans migrated following the herds of their prey. Equipping and history tell us It's not an either/or issue but rather a both/and one. It's both meat and plants, not one or the other. To simplify what Dr Cywes said Diabetes is nothing more than the inability to properly regulate blood sugar. Doesn't matter why, in grasping the idea. Whether it's insuln resistance or deficency, the end result is the same. Blood sugar that's too high. As he stated Diet is the largest contributor to blood sugar. Period Absolutely nothing else comes close. A non Diabetic, had about a teaspoon, around 4 grams of sugar in their entire blood volume. But a canned soda, can be ten times or more what's naturally there. Just one. We create and store glucose The skeletal muscle holds the majority and it's locked in, it can't be used for cellular energy. It's about 1200 cal or 300 grams. So, that's a bunch but remember, it's locked in the muscle it's not a threat. The body has no access to it for energy needs. The threat is the sugar that's stored in the liver. But that's only about 300 cal or 75 grams. Or, two 12 oz regular coca cola's and a tad bit. The studies I've seen, showed that glucose creation at it's highest only amounts to a quarter of total glucose at fasting, which is usually highest. If fasting is 90 Glucose creation is only reasonable for around 22 mg of it. The fact is, diet is the largest glucose threat and as such. It is our greatest weapon to fight back. Imo from the research I've done and just a common sense thing If you eat high carb, long enough, you're going to kick v invasion resistance into gear, no matter what the carb is you're eating. Plant based will help initially, but overall, it's still going to drive resistance up and it may eventually push you over the edge. Another threat here is it's far more common to see plant based processed foods, than high fat processed. Look at all the fake meats out there now and look at the ingredients list for them. There's plant stuff there, but the majority is chemical additives and preservatives to mimic the texture and look of meat. I mean seriously Natural flavors are in all these things, they won't divulge what that entails. Define natural flavors. Lol So Yes A low fat, high carb diet can help Bit it may not last Low carb high fat will work better as a long term treatment because the threat from the high fat aspect is lowered but the fact that the body is using the fat, not storing it. It can't be a threat, if the body has used it. It's no longer there. It's been utilized,, it's history. Can it help? Yes Will it last? That's still to be determined In the other corner There's a LOT of history in support of carb restriction. Drs Allen and Joslin used it 100 years ago in their practice in the years before insuln was discovered and they added years to a patient group that typically lived just a few months beyond diagnosis. Humans in ancestral times ate carbs bit they had neither the availability nor sneaky food companies we do. They ate carbs just part of the year and their food was fresh, they're want a Mickey D's on every corner or instant bunk in a box waiting at the store. Quite simply If carb restriction were a serious hazard to life, humanity would be extinct. It works Because carb restriction for Diabetes uses the natural physiology of the body to correct it. Sorry for the novel. The super simple nuts and bolts- It's easy as this Carbs in, glucose up Glucose up, risks up. Less carb in, Glucose up less Glucose up less, risks up less.

The one thing doc said, I would disagree with is there many paths to diagnosis. Diet is certainly the largest issue but there's also the genetic issue and the fact that certain drugs and chemicals, even air pollution can cause Diabetes. Own the fact that you are a crummy diet and didn't do yourself any favors but let's not make a blanket statement that it's always diet and diet alone. Imo That's focusing on the wrong detail anyway. Accept it's here Get busy doing something about it. Make WHAT the focus, not WHY. It's too late to understand or do much about WHY. Which is the point in the whole video. You CAN and MUST do suggesting about this or let's face it One of these days, this thing will claim your life but until then, it's gonna destroy your body one bit at a time. I like my bits better than I ever loved my carbs. Which btw were "healthy" all those starch veggies. I was never much on sweets. I just ate way too much starch, Drank WAY too much soda, and came from a family that is cursed with this disease. (11 of 15 siblings in my parents generation are or were, diabetic. Goes back to my second great grandparents. Diabetics in every generation, in both families, it's not obesity alone either. I have an uncle who is thin as a rail and one whose fat as little pig, brothers both Diabetic. Their only links, diets that sucked and a mother who was diabetic) Cut the carbs Rock out to improved results on that meter!!!
