This series of videos is designed to get you into the FPV Drone Hobby by keeping things simple. In this episode I give you a non-exhaustive list of really good FPV drones for both ANALOG and DIGITAL and show the price of each. You want an FPV Drone that will grow with you and survive crashes. In future episodes I'll give you suggestions for Goggles, Radios, Chargers, Batteries.

So glad I found you and this step by step series. I've done a lot of research and my head hurts. I've slowly but surely bought my beginners set up that will hopefully take me from a beginner to intermediate before I may HAVE to upgrade bits and pieces. I was struggling to know where to begin with setting things up before I even take flight. I'm pleased that my first FPV drone is the same one you're talking about, the THF2.

Update: For long range buy the flywoo explorer For freestyle build one yourself For cinematic FPV buy the Nazgul v5 for analog and the Geprc mark 5 for digital. For racing build one yourself or buy one of evan turners company

It is always good to start with a small and cheap FPV drone, perhaps 2 -3 inch frame. It is just much easier to handle. A 5 inch quad carrying a camera is great once you get the hang of flying.

Hi Steve..👋🏻 Love your channel, so informative and you are a joy to listen to. My question is, as a beginner would you recommend buying all Digital.? I have been flying a small cheap camera drone that a friend gave me to practice on. ( Can’t think of the name ? ) but it’s very agile and sensitive. I’m not worried about the cost as I’m more thinking later saying money if I get set up for Analog and then find I would rather move to Dig.?? A friend had Analog and image seems a problem at time..( eg frosting ) What do you think..? Thanks..🙏🏻

Thanks for taking the time to put this series together - it's nice to get a consolidation of information versus wading through thousands of sites/videos looking for answers. Is it a correct assumption that the up-angle design of the GoPro mounts is to put the camera at approximately horizon level when moving in fast forward flight in a pitch-down attitude? But at slower flight (less forward pitch) or hover then you get mostly skyward GoPro views?

That is correct. Usually for beginners the camera tilt is minimal and the GOPRO mount can be purchased with only a 10 degree tilt or use a moveable mount. 10 degrees will still give you plenty of forward speed and also a very nice hover will looking forward. For experienced pilots the tilt is usually at 35 to 45 degrees.

Practice, practice, practice... makes for perfection. If the sim is causing you to be frustrated then it could be the controller you are using plugged into your computer.... Is it a real RC Controller?

Great series thanks for putting this together!!! It would be great if we could have video/tutorial how to convert your mavic air 2 to an FPV drone!!! As we speak there is no support for goggles and for a beginner it would be great to start with a drone with all safety features. I hope it is not an overkill.

Since the MAVIC AIR 2 is a camera drone, it can never be an FPV RC Hobby drone. When you wear a special goggle with a camera drone it is exactly the same as taking your phone off your remote and placing it inches from your eyes.

The FATSHARK is pure analog (as pure as you can get). The quality of the video in the googles relies on the quality of the transmission to you, and they type of antennas you use to receive the signal, then finally the resolution and type of screen in your goggles.

Buy a $80 tiny whoop and a cheap pair of box goggles first! if you don't like it, you're not out hundreds of dollars! Besides, larger quads are VERY dangerous, especially beginners!

Better yet, try a FPV simulator to see if you have the skills to control a quad. Lot's of fun and nobody gets hurt!

Hey Captain, I am loving your video series for beginners FPV. I have been flying cinematic for years, but I'm really looking forward to trying some different flying. I see on your digital setup from video two and then you mentioned it on video three that you use The DJI goggles with the DJI controller. If I have a spare controller for a phantom 4 will that work with other digital quads? So far I like the price of analog, but... Digital seems much cleaner. Thank you for the series and as I like to tell him on the job site, information is good.

The remotes you have for the DJI Camera Drones are very basic and are not designed for the FPV hobby, so you can't use them.

Going to integrate a mistake here I saw. When talking about either the x or modified x frame. In reality when using a go pro at full sensor with any stabilization off the modified x will not show props while a c frame will. Though if someone is using a GoPro and always runs with stabilization on instead of using the whole sensor on the camera it cuts down the edges of the picture. If you are doing cinema stuff recording with this off and fixing things in post production you’d want to go modified x (deatcat). If not for most the x frame would be good. Besides trade off on performance. Just wanted to add this as I am a camera guy. Otherwise good info.

So with the DJI Digital system, technically you do not need a go-pro for recording unless you want 4K? I like the idea of the TinyHawk, but in the UK it is only available from abroad and shipping is sometimes suspect in terms of if it will arrive!!

Thank you. The only addition today is that there are now more options in the DIGITAL video market & the ELRS receiver market has grown. Both did not exit back in the days of this series, which means there will be a future episode 12, 13, 14, etc.

I wish to try FPV but as an old guy I’m concerned about lack of coordination skills and lower reaction time. So, I fly my DJI drones very slowly. The analog quads are affordable, as is the radio. But the goggles price puts me off. Any recommendations? Fantastic video, too, I might add. 👍👍

I know you didnt talk about it in this video, but i just ordered the eachine e013 rtf kit, after watching your review and that of rc saylors. Kinda wanna get my feet wet lol. I know i will be able to use the included fpv mask on other quads, but what about the controller that is packaged with it?

It is not for the true FPV hobby as in my video series, but if you can fly that, then I suggest you watch this series and move up to the quality pro gear and then you'll be fully in the hobby with all the capabilities.

Hi and thank you for another amazing video. Question: I purchased a GPRC CinePro 2 and like a NOOB purchased a crossfire protocol however, I have the FRSKY Taranis X9 S Lite ACCESS 2.4 g 24 ch Transmitter. Will I have to purchase another protocol or any way to pair the GPRC to the radio?

Crossfire receiver means you need to purchase the Crossfire module that goes in back of your Taranis. I don't own such a module, so can't help you out there. However, you could order a FRSKY XM+ receiver and then solder the wires coming off that receiver to where the wires for the crossfire receiver connect, then bind it to the radio.

For more on the Crossfire module, I'd recommend checking out Joshua Bardwell's videos on that. There's a cheaper micro Crossfire module and the full size Crossfire module. You'll have to decide for yourself which module is right for you after watching his video about it.

I'm still watching! Just locked into the beginners series. Silly questions: When the drone is still the camera appears to be angled up at about 5° and the GoPro mount is at about 12°. I could go on. But how do you handle this. It's almost like the GoPro can only film when moving forward. I told you it was a silly question. And yes, I have never seen a drone close.

Correct. If you pointed the pilot camera and GoPro forward, then when you fly you’d be staring at the ground for the simple reason that an FPV drone moves forward at an angle. The higher the angle the faster one goes.

Hello Steve. Thank you so much for all the info in all those FPV for beginners videos. So much information, wow! I currently own a Mavic Mini and have been looking to get into the FPV hobby for a couple of months now. I am leaning towards the analog side and I would like to get a drone that I could put a GoPro (or Osmo Action) on top of. I was looking at the Hawk Pro or the Mark 4 Freestyle, which are approximately the same price at the moment. Which one would you recommend for a beginner pilot? Also, would you recommend that I go withc the 6S version or stick to the 4S? From what I understand, I can still use 4S batteries on the 6S version, it just won't be as powerful as with a 6S. Is that correct? That would leave me with the option, in the future, to go with 6S batteries once I get more confortable with the drone. Finally, I realize that all these drones will be over 250 g, especially after adding a GoPro or Osmo Action. I live in Canada too (Montreal's south shore), this means I will have to get my license and register the drone with Transport Canada. Do you have any suggestion on where I could find a study guide for the exam? If it is available in french, that would be awesome, but if not, this is not a deal breaker! All the drones you mentioned are good. There is no added benefit of a digital camera and an analog receiver other than you get to use a radio that you like and you can use that same radio with other devices in the hobby.

I have way too many GoPros & action camera of all types. For locations to fly, I just wake up early and fly pretty much anywhere as the sun comes up, when no one is around.

As a Canadian I fly every type of drone on the planet. Transport Canada has just one rule and that is that ANYTHING in the air that is unmanned has to follow some regulations. Doesn't matter if it is an RC PLANE, RC HELICOPTER, RC GLIDER or RC DRONE. If the item to be flown is under 250 grams then you can just go and have fun. If it is over 250 grams then you have to register it for $5 on the Transport Canada website and you should also have a Pilot Certificate to fly unmanned items. ($10 to take the test to get the certificate).

You told in the first episode about batteries at cam-drones lasting -say- 30min, but sofar you've not mentioned the flight time of an average FPV. I understand it's all about light-or-heavy performance, but is there a sort of average? And a difference for Analog or Digital FPVs flighttime?

You are confusing the FPV hobby with the beginner Camera Drone Hobby. Camera Drones from DJI are designed for beginners and since the battery and remote are included and the user can’t configure the drone, the flight time is set so that every user receives similar results. There is no such thing in the FPV hobby.

Hey again.... Ok I purchased the T18 AND on the website for the Mark 4 there are options for the recievers before you purchase... The options are: FRSKY XM+. FRSKY R-XSR, FLYSKY FSA8SV2, and TBS NANO RX.. So for the Jumper T18 or the Roadmaster TX16S which receiver should I choose? Or will any of the above work or what works best for FPV flying. I bought the Tinyhawk2 Freestyle and the flight controller went out. They refuse to replace it without a fee that is almost the cost of a new drone. Long story, but anyway i am out quite a bit of cash on this thing. Can you recommend a flight controller that is cheaper and will work with the RTF radio?

Simple question, I have been able to buy the dji fpv drone for 600 on a sale, however my intention is to be part of the real fpv community with the 5 in drones. Since I already have the Googles and the transmitter the only thing I have to consider is to buy a dron with caddex Vista with no reciver?

You will need the Black DJI FPV radio (transmitter). The grey one you have is not for the FPV hobby. Your goggles will work but you will need to go into your goggles menu and change them to the FPV hobby. I think the option is in the ABOUT menu… then power off, then on, your goggles. Finally you will need batteries and an RC Hobby battery charger. You can then buy any FPV drone that has a DJI Air unit or CADDX Vista unit in it. You would select PNP for the receiver.

That is how we all started in FPV. We took the plunge. Buying the gear is easy. Having it all work together is not so easy, which is why this series exists. Flying it is even more difficult because humans have terrible hand/eye coordination, so it takes practice to refine the skill.

ive been putting the hours in on all the sims and i find myself going back to velocidrone over the others, after getting my first real quad last week I was pleasantly surprised how similar it flies compared to the sim and im pleased to report so far ive had no crashes, I found the only thing i was rusty at was landing but other than struggling to find the disarm switch so far its all gone well, I would definitely advise doing some hours in velocidrone prior to flying the real thing

Im considering an fpv drone (never flown). Currently I'm considering a betafpv rtf kit, mainly to get the controller to use with drone simulators on my pc, and then upgrade to a tinyhawk freestyle. Nope. The FPV Goggles can be used with DIGITAL FPV drones but only if you go into the menu system on the goggles and change the communication to the FPV Hobby. The controller can't be used with anything in the FPV hobby.

Hi...could you do an episode showing whats the benefit of pfv drone? it is possible to do the smooth move as the normal camera drone? i love the analog system as fits my budget and i have a go pro now so it seems kinda a good option to invest in but most of my friends are more into the camera drone (mavic mini/air) so i dont really have a reference point on drones. FPV Drone hobby means no restrictions on how you wish to film. It is all up to the skills of the pilot.

@@charakuttaahjon3222 At the beginning of each of these episodes I show video shot with an FPV drone... Does it look smooth to you? There is no such thing as a camera gimbal, sensors, stabilization for an FPV Drone camera, it is all up to the skill of the pilot. The better you are at flying the more amazing the video. An FPV drone can get far more shots/perspective than a camera drone. Perhaps go and watch RU-vid channels like Mr. Steele, or Rotor Riot or Le Drib for some simple examples of FPV drone footage.

In the FPV hobby there are no instructions with drones because it is not a beginner hobby like that of the camera drones. I agree with you though... if you want newbies into the hobby, step by step instructions would be nice.

It works like this in the RC HOBBY..... First you buy a RADIO. When you buy the RADIO you must know what type of receivers it connects to. Next you buy a drone and you order it with a compatible receiver.

Here’s a stupid question. After watching your video I went out to the site to potentially buy the Sector drone but it sounds like I have to put it together. How much assembly is required on these FPV drones? Do I have to solder wires? Do they come with detailed instructions on how to assemble? Been flying a Mavic Pro since they came out but FPV is all new to me. Are you going to do a video on assembling these, if assembly is necessary? Thanks for the great series!

Nice series :) But why do you call the non-DJI remote analog??? It's a digital signal on the 2.4Ghz band just as the DJI remote at 5.8Ghz. The analog rc radio's from the past had unique frequency crystals you needed to change to change the band. Btw, the DJI goggles only have 4 bands and 25mW power in EU. Might not be worth the money over here.

It keeps it simple for beginners because the FPV AIR UNIT has a built in receiver but the only radio that can currently talk to it is the DJI FPV Radio, and people associate that radio with the DIGITAL FPV SYSTEM.

Yes, you can have a DIGITAL camera and wear DJI FPV Goggles and use any radio you want. Just make sure to always order an FPV Drone with a receiver that matches your radio.
