Before WWII you had to rotate the antenna in your aircraft and it would point in the direction of the station. Or 180° out. You had to know where you were before the information was useable. Amelia Earhart was one of the most famous users of old Non Directional Beacon system. The VHF Omnidirectional Range was a huge improvement in navigation. It told you which direction and whether you were going to or from the station! Sometimes it was paired with a Distance Measuring Equipment station. The network of VOR stations is still in use but has been mostly superseded by GPS. You can tell a VOR station by that thing in the middle that looks like a giant bowling pin.
I know that aesthetics play a large role for you, but somewhat below the price range of the V85 lies Yamaha's Tenere 700. Fantastic adventure tourer, significantly more affordable, lighter, and more maneuverable both on and off the road. With the bonus of Yamaha's reliability and dealer network. Just a thought. Another great video, enhanced my Sunday. Thanks man.
I think you better recheck on your pricing, this exact set up he is driving can be had for 11,200.00 at my dealer, they have several for that price . They have jacked up the pricing on a t7, and that’s no luggage , cruise or anything extra. A t7 would be way too tall for him.
Yeah - unfortunately I have things backwards. Aesthetics come first and everything else comes after that. The T7 is great - I have a friend who loves his. But the plastic bums me out too much. (Probably too tall for me too)... Give me a 350lb honda that looks like a himalayan or an old scrambler and has 50+ hp, no beak, little plastic, a round headlight, and I'm in!
That “radio tower” is called a VOR (VHF Omni Range). They are used for aircraft navigation. Cool find! Thanks for sharing this video! I love your channel.
You’re 100% right. Unless your just going to do Road trips, its to big. Most accidents are slow speed tip overs. Especially as you age. (Like me.) If your just going to do road trips with a music sound trip just get the GS. But the videos won’t be anywhere near as compelling as your previous trips. Good luck sir!
Thanks Angelo. Loved the desert scenery. Yeah, the long flat straight stretches are monotonous for sure. You hit it square on. The weight of the Moto Guzzi in soft dirt and sand isn't fun. They say to immediately dismount and use the clutch and throttle to gently push it out of any rut or turn it around. I don't think you will be happy using this vehicle off-road. It's allot to invest for anything but very light off-road use. And that's not your preference. You need to stick with the 300-450cc dual sport with a low seat. The Himalayan is the ideal bike for that. But reliability can be a real concern. Yamaha needs to offer something in this range, that is not a tall dirt bike. They would sell a ton of them. Gord
@@SomeGuyRides As long as the Himi remains reliable, use that for the rough stuff. It really is ideal for that application. But when you want to do a road trip, then the V85 will be far more comfortable. Plus, it will be fine on hard pack dirt. I'm now looking at BMW's R1250RT... 29.9" seat height got my attention. Gord
I just read an article about Dutch writer and adventurer Paul van Hooff in Moto m. Zine. He rode his 1975 Moto Guzzi V7 all over the world, so it is possible! He named his bike Guus, a common name here. Guus geluk is our version of Gladstone Gander. If you do decide on this short stocky Italian, call it Guus or Gustav for luck😉
Johnny Pow mentioned the KTM 390 Adventure in one of the early videos. Not sure if you ever got a chance to ride one. I feel like it'd be perfect for you (mainly because I think you're so much like me). Will touch 100 mph, happy to cruise at 75 mph with some juice left, fantastic in twisties, and good stock suspension that gobbles forest service roads and BDR-type stuff. About ~380 lbs. wet. Let me know if you ever want to ride it and I'll meet up with you somewhere between Atlanta and Asheville.
Saw this episode last night and I know where the radar tower is so I rode out there to collect my booty. Someone already got it😢😢. Oh well just wanted to let you know. Wednesday 4-12-2023.
Ang, Followed you from the start. Love the dialogue above all need more of it on these long desert stretches. In my opinion that is what makes you unique and my favorite. When you are searching for why shit is and why shit is not you are at your apex. . Here is a suggestion for the MotoGuzzi. Buy one that is meant for the HWY. That bike is too heavy for real adventure like the ones that you have put me through on the 125 and the Himi. Dig it it is a cool motor, I get it but keep it on the street and give us more crazy adventures on the 125 and 411 Himi. On another note, talk about bad timing. I proudly put on my new SGR tee that said "Knowing you could die makes everything better". Walked into my neighbors house and he told me he has Liver cancer and 4 months to live. Damn how does that shit happen?
Yeah - it seems to take about 4 days and the knowledge that I have 10 or more to go for me to start to start going a little nutty. But there's some interesting stuff coming in this series! Agree - for what I'm doing now - the V85 is too heavy. But someday when I'm done with the rough stuff I'll pick one up maybe... Oh jeez - that is absolutely the worst about the shirt. Yeah - I'm pretty sure your friend did not at all agree. Terrible...
You made that treasure hunt easy. It's right beside a well published aviation tower. Especially since you gave the gps. With the photo, there was no need to give coordinates. Just the nearest known landmark. If I were in the area, I would fly myself to it. But I'm in Georgia.
What about a Honda CB500X. There are a lot of off-road improvements available, including bigger spoked wheels, bash plates and much more, Honda reliability and sufficient power and road-worthiness. You could have an awesome, lighter bike for a lot less money
Man - I had hopes for the 500x. But I just can't deal with a beak and a triangle headlight. I know I know - stupid to chose a bike based on looks. But - it just doesn't do anything for me at all. Unfortunately...
I have no idea what tires were on that thing. They weren't aggressive - just sort of street tires I guess. I don't think I'd do well in sand on any bike - but it was okay going slow... I need some practice on that sort of stuff...
You make me want to trade in my RE Classic 350 for a scrambler or trail bike. I enjoy watching your videos. I would like to head out to Southern Utah some day Kanab and route 66 area.
I was shocked - shocked I tell ya- to find out you were born a "Newt". It has a very negative connotation 'round here and I just didn't want to believe it. Then the shit story confirmed all my worst fears. lol. The yellow framed church is south of town as you head south on rt 94. Basically half way b/t Newton and Blairstown. I used to ride by it daily before I transfered to a new station on the other side of the county seat. Anyway, on the bright side, at least you didn't yell "Tally-hooooo!" in this episode. Oh, ya, almost forgot, since you bought up LUH in the video, if you had to do the TAT again today and the only choice was LUH or the Guzzi, what would you take?
Oh man - I'd have to take LUH. Although I feel like there were only a few sections that would give me trouble on the V85... Warloop, the passes, but other than that I think it'd be okay... well - I got kind of lucky on not much mud - it would suck in that stuff too...
@@SomeGuyRides I tend to agree. Bigger is always better right up to the point where it isn't. And, I would imagine, you saw more detail (lol, though u boys did miss the bigfoot until editing) by having a slower pace on the CTs. Also, I hope the beginning of my comment didn't freak u out, but a quick check of my channel will confirm your childhood home is my current AO.
@@SomeGuyRides not yet ... Plan on trying to get up there next month and check it out 👌 PS : surprises me you got some roots as a mountaineer .... that is a plus ( unless your roots are of the whites of course 😫 )
I have been watching and enjoying your videos for a while. The Honda Trail 125 was the most enjoyable. I was enjoying this video until about 17:37 when you began to use some terrible fowl language I stopped it there. Yes I realize that you are a grown man and can use any language that you want. I get it. However, you are in my living room in where I don't want to hear it. There are Christian people here and children in listening distance. I would love to continue watching your videos but not with fowl language involved Probably a whole lot of other folks who feel the same way.. Do you want to lose a bunch of viewers or tone it down and keep us. Your call brother. God Bless
People have different traditions and have different rules. If I'm invited to your house - I will gladly respect whatever rules you have in place there. I would never come to your house and expect my rules to apply. If you don't like the traditions in my house - you don't have to come over. When people feel that their personal rules should apply to everyone else - that's what causes problems in the world. My call is, live and let live. But also - thanks for checking out the vids!
