Ciao! I have a cello that’s mine that iam restoring and iam not a professional strings luthier, iam restoring it because it’s fun and iam learning a lot buy doing it my self. When it comes to the bridge how do you know what mod franch or Belgium to choose whiteout now how the cello sounds in the first place to make the right decision? I hope you can help me how to think what to look for in my cello so I know what bridge mod is best for my cello. Have a great day //Jose

Thanks for the video! Really enjoyed it. I have 2 qn! If you were to use 2 words to describe both Belgium and French bridge, what would it be? Also, is there any ways to tell from the grain if it’s wood quality is good?

Thanks for all of your videos, they are very enlightening. I have a question regarding cello bridges, have you tried the milos stamm bridge with a wooden strip connecting both legs? Any opinion about it?

I have tried the Milos bridge on a violin. The sound is very mediocre. I prefer the Aubert Deluxe and Barsa Super Deluxe

I tried a lot, but only the french bridge works for me.

Indeed it has a more beautyful sound and it is more stable regarding the bridge feet width compared to the Belgium bridge. I can understand your decision evens I am forced by customers to use the Belgium bridge. Have fun ER

Dear Maestro, How to find perfect width size bridge ? Is it depends on the bassbar ? And how to measure it ? Thankyou

I use a small brass jig which I am going to offer you very soon here on my online shop. But you can also use a tiny piece of paper or a slightly bended ruler; measure from the F hole and doublecheck the distance: bridge foot outer edge to the position where the isobar actually passes underneath the bridge foot inside the instrument. On a cello a standard measurement should be 4mm. A professional who is able to get out a nice sound with ease might also come along very well with 3mm. Beginners love the easy responding with 5mm. Got it? Have fun ER

Thanks Edgar. It would be nice for you to compare Violin Bridges. One for the most power and another for the softest sweetest sound.

5:20 That feels backwards to me, if the bridge spreads apart won't the outer edge loose contact even more? Or does it actually counteract the spread by having more pressure on the inside?

If the client forces your hand, you can cheat a belgian bridge by SLIGHTLY thinning the upper inner sides of the legs and the lower outer sides to give them a move vertical (and more stable) shape.

Thanks you maestro! I have a question, I'll change my dbass bridge, now this have a belgium bridge, very nice, but too louder and I have only a bit of colors, I think I change to a french bridge for have colorfull sound and more harmonics if is possible, what do you think? Thanks!

I love how he labeled many differences between them that completely didn’t even catch my eye and all could think was the only difference is the Belgian has a higher arch. Got to love the brain sometimes

are some cellos designed only to have a french bridge ? or can you put either one on as if it doesn't matter?

Hi Edgar, I have a German cello made in 18th century probably in Klingenthal (Saxon), the cello is a very warm and chocolate sounding. Do you think I should put a Belgian or french?
@Connor-fy5vg

Same, I have german cello made in 1780, I find that the belgium bridge works best to give it a more powerful sound and project a bit more while adding a bit of brightness to the mellow sound. Also the playability was much easier.

I think the best way is to get two bridges carved one of each style and try them out to see which one sounds better on the same cello
@EdgarRuss

Well that would be ideal situation. But usually no-one wants to spend this much.

Maestro, thank you for making these videos. Maestro, what does the number underneath the bass leg and the treble leg of my French bridge mean? It says 82 and 13.
