The huge seas and high winds are not letting up. The ocean is horrible and Peanut is having a tough time. Without her engine she is not as stable as she used to be.
In the middle of the night disaster happens. Peanut is completely underwater…
… After quite a few days at sea we finally get to Broome and head into land for a fresh produce and meat provision.
It’s slow going but we finally manage to make the shore.
Thanks for watching.
Until next time…
Wendy and Magnus

What else would one expect towing an open dinghy in such conditions? I used a foam-filled Polycraft, unsinkable, with no outboard and the bungs out it is self-draining. I never towed it on a passage. I hoisted, then stowed it on padded rests and bowsed it down inverted on foredeck. I also bought it new, with a trailer, in safety yellow because foam filled it qualifies by SOLAS as a survival aid. Also, having pontoons integral with the sides, it is stable enough to make getting in and out of the vessel easy, and being plastic, it is easy on paint and fenders. Also, I have screwed an extra seat, and a canopy to it which goes on if I am doing any fishing over shallow water. Try screwing a canopy on to an inflatable. The Polycraft I have is the heavy version, Heavier than a tinnie, but I think lighter than the ever-leaking pain in the arse Zodiac it replaced. It will take a 15 hp outboard, but all I ever used was 3.5 horsepower. Ten would have been nice though.

That is very sad. Magnus put a lot of work into Peanut. You’re definitely going to have to get another tinny. Hazel is not going to cope with a salty trying to climb in with you. So, for the Peanut 2 will a cover while en route keep the water out? A cover with a bridge bar slotted into the our lock holes?
@LifeinaNutshell
@LifeinaNutshell 7 месяцев назад
Hi William. A cover has been suggested by quite a few people and it is definitely worth considering. We do not plan on doing any more ocean crossings towing a tinnie. We’re just going to stay close to shore and hop along the coast with mainly day sails, so hopefully we won’t encounter sea state like the Indonesian crossing again. Hazel is definitely not up to the Kimberley task! A fast, tall tinnie is a must for us to get the most out of our Kimberley experience. Thanks for watching and commenting. W.

Hello, my darlings! I'm so sorry that you had to lose Peanut😒 I can remember you working so hard on her to make her the wonderful 'companion' that she was to Nutshell, and the many ventures that you made with her! Thank goodness, however, that you're both ok, even though you riskily saved her outboard, before deciding to cut her free, not to further endanger Nutshell! So glad that you're back in Australia! All love and best wishes to you both, Claire, Tommi the rescue dog, and Amber, the rescue cat, aka 'the new sofa crew'😊 ❤❤❤

We chose Peanut for the Kimberley so we would be safe in such a remote location especially with large crocodiles about! It was wonderful to have a decent sized tinnie so we could explore without worrying about an attack. As we want to continue exploring in the Kimberley region a small dinghy doesn’t quite work for us even though we could easily store it onboard. W.

In my many years of sailing, I’ve seen or heard about many lost dinghies. In all cases they were towed and most simply disappeared. Peanut’s demise was unfortunately catastrophic. Happy you retrieved the motor and that you didn’t go the way of peanut. If you get another tinny, I strongly suggest that you invest in an Apple air tag so you can keep track of it. In such terrible conditions, you could cut it loose and heave to to ride out the storm, then track the tinny with the air tag.⛵️⛵️⛵️

Sorry to learn about your loss of Peanut, thought towing a diggy Middle Ocean is a big risk not in one's favor, as sadly you found out. You will not be the first of the last to lose dingy this way. However, sharing an experience I had owning 3 well-known brands of inflatables, All had fallen apart. Fed up I Bought an Ocean Craft Aluminium 2nd hand Dingy. build in QLD it looks like an inflatable, instead of the rubber tubes they and the hull are all built-in Aluminum. It is so stable it is a joy I modified it also by adding my rubber rowlocks that fit my zodiac when it failed, I glued them on the tubes with JW weld. Handy it when my motor fails or I need a workout I can row. I call my dingy Ki-Tal (it's the first few letters of my two grandchildren's first names) I can confirm this it is fantastic dingy as it has a high capacity for carrying loads and will never sink or fall apart or need to blow it up. I should outlive my young grandchildren it is so well-built. It sits on my foredeck as My boat is 15 meters so I mount it on the foredeck tube cradle. I had to modify it as Love my staysail masthead cutter rigg setup, I had a welder cut down by 70cm to just under 11' fit inside the staysail stay chain plate. I'm sharing my experiences since you are replacing Peanut, may I suggest looking into possibly buying a 2nd had Ocean Craft dinghy this may be worth checking out. If you need some more info I can send you photos of my setup, send me info on how to. Keep up the roaring adventures you're both very good at it. SV Skoiern IV.
