What a sunset! I spent all evening looking for a holy grail hull! I couldnt even find an affordable triToon lol but i will keep looking .. havnt even checked craigs list yet and also might go walk around some boat yards and marinas and look for for-sale signs 🤙

I have spent a lot of time in each of the towns you stopped at in this video. Its kind of a shame the way the hurricanes changed the way Port St. Joe looks. Back in the 90s when I'd come down each summer for a vacation, it was a tree filled place. Big beautiful Live Oaks with Spanish Moss. I love Appalach and Carrabelle as well. Looking forward to seeing video of your Big Bend Gulf crossing.

I Enjoyed this episode for nostalgic reasons. In 1977 and 1978 when I was in the Gulf on my shrimp boat, I worked the coast from Appalachicola to Gulfport. Seeing the intra coastal route, from Port St Joe to Appalach and Carrabelle , through your lens almost 50 years later was facinating. I traveled it on a 72' trawler drawing 8', several times. Can't wait to see your and Wavey's adventures up the east coast of Fl, GA, and SC, my home territory. Fair winds and blue skies!!

Dang now im caught up on the videos. Im in hernando County . There some cool rivers it this area of Florida to check out.. Crystal river has a huge bay with springs. Its called kings bay. Homassassa river is good. Weeki wachee river is beautiful. You can kayak up it. Stay away from the chaz river. Shallow

Our current sailboat that I believe would make life a lot easier stress wise on depth and height restriction has a swing keel that allows us to beach the boat like you can with your shanty. We wouldn't have the interior freedom you do, but there are pros and cons to everyone's boats. I can't wait to loop it

That was a cool episode, we love Port Saint Joe, It's a great little town, They used to have a nice marina there but Hurricane Michael destroyed it. Steinhatchee, Florida is another sleepy little town with a lot of charm. Hurricane Idalia caused a lot of damage there last year. Lots of boats were destroyed.....

Pretty cool, vacationed on cape San blas regularly growing up, port st. Joe a neat little town. Really enjoying following your trip, Brenton. Joked in an earlier vid about not knowing I wanted to be a shanty boat captain till being introduced to your channel. Heck I hadn’t even heard of the great loop, but I can tell you now I definitely would love to make the trip one day. Hi Brendan, great series, love it to bits. I hope to do a similar sort of lifestyle on the Murray, here in Australia. Take some advice from an old sailor. Try to always tie your fenders (bumpers) onto your boat. That way you dictate wear it is going to rub on your Shanty Boat. I noticed there was a very real danger of you breaking a window. This is the reason for my post. Cheers Glenn.

That is (was?) The last best place on California. Downieville is a special spot. I loved riding out there for rhe day. A great girlfriend was from NSJ hippy ;)

@@backwatersandbackroads NSJ is still "Hippyville. Sadly lots of "hippy agriculture" happening up there now. It's pretty bad. Same goes for everything up by Malakoff Diggins and by Mother truckers etc... Downieville is now an international recognized off road bike racing area. They have the "Downieville Downhill" every year now. People from all over the world come to ride/race their bikes down the Mountain from Sierra Buttes into Downieville on the old Single track Mining trails. The race ends with a giant jump off a ramp into the N Fork of the Yuba under the Courthouse bridge in DVL. Met my wife in DVL, we've been together for 35 years now. I'm loving your videos. We talked once before when I asked about the possibility of using Diesel engines etc... Take care my friend.

My husband and I look forward to every episode now. It beats watching the news! I'm especially interested in the Florida part of your trip since I partially grew up in Sarasota (Osprey). He was stationed at Tyndall AFB for awhile. We're looking at snowbirding in the Crystal River area and want to learn more about it. I'm curious, do you plan to take the "shortcut" across Florida through Lake Okeechobee?

Quick question.. When you cross your wake and get home and settled, do you plan on publishing your trip stats? Actual miles, fuel expenses, food costs, all that sort of information?? Im in the process of selling my boat and going to buy a pontoon boat or barge and build me a shanty boat and that info could be very beneficial for me on planning.. Could help a whole lot of folks.. Wonderfull videos, lets me dream following you adventures. Can't wait to start mine..

Have you investigated the possibility of going full electric propulsion? Looks like you have much more room on the roof for panels and room underneath for batteries. It would be great not carrying gas cans around any more.

Spent some time in Apalachicola and Carabella, Was working with the Museaum there. Did you get to go in the Ship wreckers shop! Looked up the C & J barge builders, there still there with a bunch of other alum commercial builders.

@@backwatersandbackroads Yes they were still listed but there was another firm in that town that seemed to have a variety of custom built plans available, I have to go back to your beginning when and where you acquired you vessel you have now. I was always intrigued by the little "Retreat" plans from the 40's. You seem to be doing better in this one than the pontoon one, More rugged, more room, more weatherproof, all but the unforgiving gutters! Let me know when you get up around the Chesapeake!

I have been enjoying your videos for a while now and my wife and I would like to travel in a boat similar to what you have built. What are your thoughts on a 1977 Skipper Liner Houseboat 31’ long and 12’ wide and a 3’ draft loaded? What are the definitions of your boat?

Howdy. If you can draft 16 inches or less, you'll double or triple the places you can go. It's amazing. Leave everyone else behind by drafting less than 2 feet. I like trailerable boats. Males life so much easier and self sufficient

Howdy. It's 30x8.6 a d drafts about a foot loaded up. 10 inches not loaded up. Good eye :)

Have you seen the Shanty Boat Beagle Adventure series here on my channel? That was a 26 foot Lil hobo . I also had a 31 footer for a while, they aren't nearly as capable. Too heavy and dip in the front.

A barge hull can be hard to find. My buddy just found one already "shanty'ed" paid 19.5k. They're usually working barges and built in places like lousiana. You can commission one to be made custom, but it's big bucks. I found ours on Facebook marketplace

What drives the decision to cross the gulf as to following the shoreline?

The gulf is very shallow for a long way put, and the tides can leave you sitting on the bottom for miles out. It's a challenge;) but nothing to worry about...you'll see;)

It's some kind of Galaxy tablet I think. It works really good. Navionics is a must have. I can hardly leave the dock without it on! Lol

why do u need gutters seem to me they just make all the water pour on the front and rear of your boat Then down into living area LOL. Just let it run off.

The gutters actually do a great job keeping the water away from the boat Stan. If they weren't there, the roof overhang would have to be longer...which isn't a bad thing, just a different design. If I we've reroof the barge, I'll probably do away with gutters

@backwatersandbackroads the gutter could get destroyed but that would be easier to replace than wrinkles in the tin if you had more overhang also it could put you over width when on the trailer later on just a thought.

Collect the rainwater and use it for washing, has to be cleaner than the river water.

As much unreleased footage you currently must have stored means your backups are crucial. Please make sure your file backups are triple redundant. I am worrying about you losing episodes to a crashed HD or whatever.
