Having stumbled upon this fun little hack several years ago, I figured it was time to let it out into the world and see what people think of it. I’ve never seen anyone else use the Evans MX5 as a batter head before but I happen to love the unique sound it produces, which reminds me a bit of an 808 snare sample mixed with some of the more modern electro snare sounds.
Yes, this head costs more than a standard drumhead but that’s just how it goes. It is less expensive than the Evans Hybrid head, so that’s nice.
As mentioned in the video, I strongly recommend using this head on metal drums only, just because of the potential for the fibers cutting into bearing edges under higher tensions.
This also works best with 8 or 10-lug drums because it’s easier to get the head up to pitch because of the distribution of tension across a higher lug count.

I've been following you guys since the first Evans Hydraulic heads video and I've watched all your videos. Simply put, you're one of the best things that happened to drum videos! I love the way you explain things and the topics you speak about, there's something for everyone! And, it goes without saying, you showed me things I didn't know about, and made me rethink about some sounds of my drumset (I absolutely loved the video about bass drum tuning, it's simple, exhaustive and thorough). So...thank you thank you thank you a lot for everything you do! Can't wait for the next video! Much love from Italy! Matteo

I first discovered the placement of a cut out drum head on top of the snare drum a very long time ago. This was by accident, when i was changing heads and placed one of my drum heads on the snare, and just had the sudden urge to tap the snare drum. I was immediately blown away at how something as simple as this method, automatically and drastically changes the pitch and of course, the tone.. And, with simple experimenting of snare wire tension coupled with the drum head placed on the snare drum, you can get so many different "electronic" snare drum sounds. There is a video of Mark Giuliana demonstrating this technique. Once again, great video guys!

Definitely a different feel but not as different as the sound. It has a surprising amount of focused mid-range “pop” to it.

+soundslikeadrum *This unusual set-up looks to me as though it needs 12 lugs.* Perhaps a new model from the TAMA®/Hoshino® SLP™ line with 12 single-piece lugs, 3mm steel shell, die-cast hoops top and bottom, and old-school release and butt with snare guides. Currently J. D'Addario & Co., Inc., doesn't have a cable snare in the PureSoundPercussion® lineup to complement an Evans® SS14MX5 batter and S14GEN20 resonant, but Grover® does nothing but cable snares for its own drums. Club Bright potentially suitable for breakbeat tone?

Now I need yall to try using a Evans J1 etched head on the snare side. I did this once out of desperation after my reso head got damaged and the music stores were closed. Found the thinnest head i had in my emergency head selection (heads ive tried out but immediately removed after not liking it, but saved since they are good back ups for emergency situations). Since i had no reso heads available, i grabbed the thinnest head with the least aggressive coating i ccould find (I hate clears). The J1 was supprisingly good. Lower tone, and more articulate than i imagined.
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 5 лет назад
I have tried this out of curiosity regarding the texture and wasn't really impressed. It's still essentially a G1, which is way too thick to get a decent range of snare response. You could dial it in to a certain sound but that was pretty much it. Evans discontinued the series too so those heads are on their way out. -Ben
@thundermolloy
@thundermolloy 5 лет назад
Yea i see that. It was out of desperation and I was surprised it sounded as good as it did. I got it to work for that one show than got a good ole hazy 300. Anyways, i thought id be cool if y'all tried a few unothodox head combos, like hydraulics top and bottom on toms, or g1 coated top and bottom.

Cool sound. To me it sounds more like a tight piccolo or even just a regular marching snare than an electronic sound. I’d love to see a video of some marching heads on a kit snare, such as the remo falam 2 or the Evans hybrid grey and hybrid coated. Keep up the great work.
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 5 лет назад
It definitely has that high-tension marching snare quality of sound. I’ve recorded this a couple different ways in the past and have been stunned by the synthetic/electronic tone you end up with. Admittedly, it doesn’t transfer as well to a distant mic. I’ll be taking a Hybrid head through it’s paces in a future vid for sure. -Ben

Snare Side is an Evans Snare Side 300 and Puresound Custom Pro Steel 20-strand wires (standard for what I run on this drum). Only factor that's been changed is the batter head and tuning. -Ben

Would you place splash cymbals on this snare head to create an even more electronic sound? Or would you recommend to use this head OR a splash cymbal?
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 5 лет назад
You certainly could (and should experiment) but I’ve found that the sound of just this head is more true to what I had in my ear. I like placing a splash on a standard head that isn’t tuned too high or adding some jingles to a head that’s tuned ultra low. Cheers! -Ben

I onced used a 5 mill snare side head on the batter. I didn't like the sound on the snare side and figured worth a try. It sounded fine but when i detuned the head to remove it, it looked like a photo of the moon. Every stick hit left a crater that wasn't visible when the head was on tight.

I feel like this video rambled on too long. There was a lot of unnecessary talking, especially parts that were stated multiple times and points that felt obvious or self-explanatory and therefore not insightful (as an experienced drummer). I could talk about drums all day face-to-face, but for a RU-vid video, I found myself skipping at 10-second increments a lot. I don’t normally feel this way for this channel. That being said, I only mean this as constructive criticism and think you’re doing an awesome job. The snare sounded really cool, and I especially liked the clip with the whole kit. That snare sounded great for the groove, and was played super smoothly.
