In this departure from sailing down the Atlantic coasts of Spain and Portugal, we take time for a minor upgrade. This is a project video, showing install and wiring for the Fusion Audio wired remote control product. A bit about how these things go into a boat.

A little Zeppelin always helps. I enjoy your DIY video and much of the information you cover. It's greatly appreciated. Fair winds!

Nicely done Kevin. I would have like to see you plug into that backbone system/spur, but your explanation was clear enough. I think I understand how these universal connections work now. Thanks.

Hi Patrick. How are things? Are you back on your boat yet? Yeah, I missed two items that I wish I'd included. One was plugging a spur cable into the backbone socket (and the second "click" you're looking for) as you mention and the other was a view of our Fusion main stereo head unit. Oh well. Not meant to be a complete tutorial.

Kevin, you are extremely precise in your workmanship, well done. I suppose that your past demanding customers had a hand in that. What is the music you use in your intro, I really like it. When Wendy was scolding you for the mess...ahem, I mean work in progress, you looked like guilty little kid, very funny.

I think I've watched every blue water vid on you tube, and you seem to present a real view of what goes on. I'm in Colorado, formerly a So Cal sailor. If you ever need crew, it would be a privilege to sail with you Captain!

Hi Daniel. Thanks for watching. We're from Colorado too (Denver and Winter Park) and used to sail on Lake Granby. We were doing summer racing and winter charter bareboating in the Caribbean. Eventually the sailing became more appealing, so we packed up and headed to Scotland. We do try to provide a view into our lives as it really is, regardless of whether it's perfect or not. The cruising life is a difficult one sometimes, mostly as regards maintenance. Luckily, Wendy and I are good with being cooped up together. I do see other cruisers where that isn't the case and it looks like it would become a real problem after a while.

Hi Bruce. I recommend always that people learn at someone else's expense if possible. Not in a bad way, like hoping they fail, but in learning from offered advice or observation. Much of what looks like smooth success at these projects is actually the culmination of having failed so often in the past. If you're going to do the cruising life you'd better be handy or rich. And we're not rich, unfortunately.

Great video. Does the Fusion radio have any subwoofers? Do you guys ever just use an anchorage, as opposed to the marina? It’s great to hear an established couple listen to the same music I do!
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman 6 лет назад
Yes, Fusion sells a 10" (I think) subwoofer) plus you can use other brands in the system if you want. Fusion and Rockford Fosgate make pretty good marine environment rated products and I have to say that I'm quite impressed with the Fusion speakers in the cockpit. These have fantastic sound quality and live in a very harsh environment. After a full season in the sun and saltwater they're still going strong. The small amps we have are undersized and if I did it again I'd go bigger there. If we turn the volume up too high they overheat and reset their breakers. As for anchorages, we do do a lot of anchoring these days, now that we have good places to anchor. However, some areas are not well suited to it (like the Atlantic coastline of Spain and Portugal). We were intimidated in the beginning, but these days we have a ton of experience. You get good fast in Greece because none of the marinas or harbors have laid mooring lines. It's all anchor and stern-to mooring.

Excellent! I had a $2400.00 audio system in my minivan I had a Rockford Fosgate 12 inch sub powered by a 900 watt Rockford Fosgate single channel amp, then a Panasonic 400 watt 4 channel amp powering my door speakers. I’m a 52 year old white guy that likes classical music and show tunes, so I don’t care about much pop music that announces your arrival two blocks down the road. My thing is natural sound reproduction. That system delivered! Then my wife totaled the minivan. I sure miss that car. Lol Dave

At just before 12:15, why are the staples which hold the Velcro become rusty? Small potatoes but curious.
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman 5 лет назад
I'm not sure exactly where you're seeing them, but I do know that a lot of the original staples used in the headliners and seat cushions were regular steel, not galvanized. Today you can get T-50 and other common size staples in galvanized, monel, and stainless steel. Regular steel staples have no place in the marine environment. This goes for fasteners too, obviously. As for why they rust, it's the salt air that permeates everything in and around the ocean.
@JDS11ify
@JDS11ify 5 лет назад
It might be the lighting but it looked like the staples which hold the white 1 in. X 6 in. (approx.) Velcro strip just near where you drilled the 1 3/4 in. hole in the bulkhead under the bed to run the control lead for the (I believe) stereo system. Like I said, might be the lighting, and yes, I sure get that regular steel has no business in a boat, and , bare in mind, I did not for a minute that you put them there. It looked like there are staples holding the strip and the metal had discoloured the white Velcro. Anyways …. Cheers.

Hi there. I went and watched the video you linked to and there's more features to our system than I was aware of. Things get better every day. We have the AV-650 model head unit and as I mentioned to Patrick below I wish I'd shown our location for that too. Fusion makes a ton of cool stuff. We've used up all the zones on our AV-650, but I have it in mind to add a simple MS-RA205 Bluetooth receiver in our forward guest V-berth when time and money allow. On our unit we slave to our phones and use Bluetooth streaming almost exclusively.
