BMW R1250GS Problems …The front Hayes brake calipers are leaking brake fluid, new Brembo calipers have been installed. So, let’s look at the whole warranty claim process and discuss the differences between Hayes and Brembo and look at how BMW process a warranty claim.
This is the fifth episode in this new series looking at the R1250GS. I am lucky to have this bike for a long-term test and review, and will cover several thousands of km over the coming weeks with the BMW R1250GS.
I will share what I think about this amazing motorbike and the incredible BMW 1250 engine. We will discuss the positives and negatives and talk about optional extras and the BMW packs / packets you might add to your GS.
I will also release several “Tips and Tricks” episodes, for helping you understand how to use the TFT and menu system and how to get the maximum from the different riding modes and settings.
I hope to upload 1 new video each week during this first season, so please Subscribe and press the Bell notification button (This will help the channel grow and develop), and of course you will be notified when the next episode is uploaded.
If you have any requests or content suggestions about the BMW R1250GS series… just let me know. Carl

I’ve been Riding for 23 years and I’ve always seen brembo as a premium brake option. I was disappointed to get my BMW GS with Brakes I’ve never heard of on it. Let alone mix matched brakes. Seemed like bmw was cheeping out. I was pleased to get brembos as a warranty fix but the gs as a premium bike should have always had Brembo brakes.

Your research, structure and delivery is unquestionably professional I’m not an engineer I don’t even own a GS but I can’t stop watching your videos lol. Who knows I may sell my trusty V Strom (who’s callipers have never leaked) and take the plunge one day! BMW should put you on the payroll (but then from a viewers point of view it wouldn’t be unbiased), excellent work Carl so refreshing to listen to a professional explaining just how it is . Keep up the good work 👍🇬🇧

Hi Andrew good morning and welcome to the channel, well I love bikes and wether its Suzuki or Triumph or any of the manufacturers... its does not matter to me. It's about our passion!!! The V-Strom is a great bike I did ride one a few years back i was impressed and great value for money too. Thankyou for your feedback it's always nice to here viewers enjoy the content. It does however take a long time to make a video and I only do this when there is something interesting to share. Spring is slowly coming 👍 Kindest regards Carl

Your analysis of how the different calipers feel is spot on with my experience. I actually liked the feel of the Hayes calipers, but my bike has now been fitted with Brembo calipers feel more progressive which work very well.

Hi Carl. I just discovered your videos. I have to say, as an owner of a 2021 R1250 GS Rallye exactly as the one you show, your videos are a revelation. I also live in Germany. Your explanations are spot on and I enjoy them a lot. Let me tell you about my experience with the bike so far, after 10.000 Km: the Hayes brakes do their job very well, however I have had nothing but noise (metal on metal noise) ever since I bought the bike. At the beginning whilst riding, and it was a pain to convince the dealer that the brakes had a problem, until they found it and repaired (the bike went 4 times into the workshop in the first 500 Km). Now the noise happens when braking. Front and rear. I never had this experience with my previous, non-BMW bikes. As of today the bike is again at the dealer because of a leak on the left telescopic fork. Another story: in Road mode, if my girlfriend rides with me in the back, I get a dialog box on the TFT display stating: „rear shock automatic adjustment defective“. Apparently, it‘s a known problem but as of today BMW does not have a solution for it. All in all, I love the engine, the bike and the way it rides. I am definitely not impressed with BMW‘s quality though. This is supposed to be a premium bike from a premium brand. Anyway, I wish you a lot of fun with it and a lot of success with the you tube channel. Keep it up because it‘s amazing! Best, Lino

Hi Lino, greetings from Hessen, thankyou for sharing your thoughts and issues with your GS. I wonder if you have had the latest software update applied. Mine was much better after the update. I also ride two up a fair bit with my wife and have not seen that error message. The noise from the front brakes can be removed by cleaning the pads and discs. I've done this for several friends and it has always worked so far. Carl

Hey ! I have a triple black 23 plate , i get a tick tick sound when riding but when i apply the brakes it dissapears ! Brand new bike 600 km i checked the calipers to see if they are mounted good but they have no tolerance or play and all seems good ... Did tou have the same ? When i press the front brake it clears
@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis Год назад
Hi Aldvex, I would suggest a call to your dealer. What you described is not normal and anything connected to brake’s really should be checked asap. When you apply the front brake it also applies the rear so it could be anything connected to the unsprung weight of the bike. So that’s lower suspension , wheels, dampers and mounting points. Give them a call in the morning and describe your observations Do let me know what they find Regards Carl

@@justthewayitis apparently i just report it to my dealer he said due to metallic brake pads they are making contact with the rotor so thats why i hear it loud . Now at 1200 km noise is merely gone , another issue is that the circular junction on the front shock is barely leaking small amount of oil enough to wet the finger tip as i pass my finger from the circle gap 🤕

Hey Carl excellent video and such a shame that you've had to go through the hassle of dealing with this issue. I hope that you enjoy those Monoblock Brembos! This video had me going into the shed to check the Hayes calipers on my '21 R1250R. I'm happy to report that I have no signs of leakage despite using the brakes hard on several trackdays. I also find them to be excellent and I think that fact that the 1250 boxers have linked brakes also add to the really effective stopping performance. In fact I think the four-cylinder RR models do too, as well as the single R! I've made a Community post on my channel that links to your video in case any of my viewers own, or knows someone with a Hayes-equipped GS. Take care, Rich 😊

Hi Rich and good evening, sorry you had to go to the garage and check, but I'm pleased you found no cause for concern, because you need your brakes in tip top condition with all your track day work... smile. Yes it was a disappointment to find leaking calipers, but also an interesting opportunity to see how the warranty system works and of course I got the afternoon on the RR... which was amazing. Very nice video! Yes you’re correct about the difference between both brands: my previous GS had Brembo front callipers, and my current one got Hayes. I noticed the difference in travel distance straight away, and I have to say I liked it: they perform really really well even with just 2 fingers on the lever, and my GSA is not a light bike. Thank you for explaining the difference in manufacturing: I was aware of the potential leaking but didn’t look into it. I’ll keep an extra eye out on my bike! 👍

Thanks for another great video. I had a 2015 R1200 RT when I was in Germany and it had Brembo brakes. I assumed my '21 GSA would too but I just looked and it has Hayes on it. Now I know to look closer for leaks. So far they've been good. All my other motorcycles have had Brembos and I obviously couldn't tell the difference from the Hayes. Fantastic brakes as far as I'm concerned and I do push the bike pretty hard in the twisties.
@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis 2 года назад
Hi Corey, yes I had no complaints about performance from the Hayes they were / are very good. You might be lucky and have a good pair, just check. Ideally let the brake area get dirty ... say 500 miles and then check them, it's much easier to spot a leak when they have brake dust on them. Best wishes Carl

Really like your videos. I bought a 2020 R1250GSA in the US with the Hayes brakes. It was recalled due to the caliper issue although I never noticed any fluid leakage. I found the Hayes brakes to perform well, with the difference you noticed in terms of lever travel. They replaced the calipers with Brembo’s and I found those to feel mushy and slow to grab. Not a complaint but just a noticeable difference. I’ve looked at all the new motorcycles on my dealers website and it appears all the bikes have Brembo brakes. Quite surprised to see the Hayes calipers on bikes in Germany. Thanks for all the great info.

Hi Carl, and once again… a great and very informative and useful video. My GS has barely 650km and based on your video and experience, I guess I should have received a recall letter from BMW informing me about this issue. After all, it is not just a defect, it is one that has to do with the brakes! Perhaps they think that the bike will eventually come to a full stop in one way or another 😳. I know now who I will be calling first thing Monday morning… Not thrilled at the moment with how BMW apparently deals with these issues, but very thankful to you for bringing up this topic. Now at least I can get it fixed. Wonder now if I will get the Brembo or Hayes calipers. Cheers, Max

Very interesting, my experience of the Hayes calipers has not been good. I bought a 2019 GS Rallye and the calipers leaked from day one. Even before I got it the calipers were replaced due to leaking. To cut a long story short I rejected the bike and it was returned to BMW. Roll forward to 2021, I bought a 2022 GS Rallye again and it came with Hayes calipers. All GSA’ a from October 2021 are supplied with Brembos. I bit the bullet and changed the calipers to Brembos at my expense.

@justthewayitis Год назад
Hi Mario and welcome to the channel, yes those spoked wheels are tricky to clean, the best thing I have found so far is a toilet brush which actually does a great job, as for chemicals or cleaning agent, I try wherever possible to use basic washing up liquid in warm water, when cleaning near or close to the braking system. As this has the least effect on brakes, and normally does a very good job. Hope that helps. Carl

Hi Mike, if you have recently collected your GS new from a dealer they should have advised you of this. Most dealership have offered customers either £500 or 500€ voucher or credit on clothing or accessories BUT most owners accept the free upgrade back to LED headlight once they came back into stock. Which I understand is / has already been happening. It’s worth you calling your dealership to discuss this with them. They really should have made you aware of this at the time of order or delivery. I would highly recommend the upgraded headlight Carl

Plenty of callipers (some Brembo) use a split design to no ill effect. My old T3 Cali is a one such. This is poor manufacturing and quality control. I’m staggered that they didn’t pick this up long before full scale production. I love the GS/GSA as a bike but not the build quality, some of the design and last, but not least, the service. I’ve moved to Honda for some perspective.

Hi Ian, I agree and hope that the new GS1300 / 1400 range that comes out next year will be much better. But still Honda do make very well made bikes that are fully tests before release. I had three CBR1000F bikes and all of them were great and only had one wheel bearing (front) and one battery failure between all three. Amazing reliability. Carl

I had a new bike from BMW in 2010 and it was a nightmare from day 2. The dealer and BMW kept arguing over the problem and after a year, the dealer refunded the money. I lost all faith in BMW after many years of championing the marque. Their build quality has reduced. I owned an R80rt, R100rt, K100rt and they were incredible bikes that stood up to high mileage. Look at BMW now and they clearly have quality control issues. The usual one is the silver/grey covering on the engine and shaft drive flaking off. I've owned 77 bikes and most makes. I'd rate Victory, KTM and Honda, as the best build quality. BMW need to improve.

Hi Neil, yes I agree they need to do better. I think Honda is still one of best to own long term, over 10 years or more. You have had a lot of bikes...an amazing collection of memories I would think. Which was your favourite? Best wishes Carl

If only we had kept some of our bikes. lol..... My first bike was a Honda SS50... I built from 3 different boxes, my dad bought it for me at an auction and thought I would never get it running. I had to get a workshop manual to help rebuild the engine ... which is probably why i first trained as a technician. I would have liked to still have that... plus my 1990 GSXR1100L which was in blue and white. Horrible to ride but lovely to look at. But nowhere to store them. Smile. 👍

Hi Cris, welcome to the channel. If you are in the UK, you have good news as all GS bikes come with Brembo's. But if you live anywhere else... it's a lottery as to which ones come fitted to your GS or GSA. You could ask your dealer but unless you buy a bike they have in stock at the dealership I dont think they can help. Let me know how you get on. Carl

I never understood why BMW changed from Brembo to Hayes calipers. In brake tests the Brembo's have more stopping power and more feel in the lever than the Hayes, so it is quite understandable that with problems or warrenty claims BMW falls back on Brembo, which proved themselves in the R1200 GS(Adventure) models.
@justthewayitis

Hi Ton, I think we would all agree with you... in not understanding why BMW made the change from Brembo to Hayes. While I was looking around the showroom I was surprised to see the same models fitted with different front brakes... some with B and some with H, it does not make any sense. Even the sales guys have no idea why. Welcome to the channel, best wishes Carl

Surely it isn’t a mystery, BMW saving money - why would you assume otherwise?
@TonVerkleijT3

@@rotoehu9266 Hayes brake systems is a subsidiary of the BMW company and Hayes calipers are initially used in the Mini constructing process, and now for the GS 1250 as well. It's just an accountancy issue. Brembo calipers are more expensive due to initially pricing and licensing. Come to think of it, my neighbor owns a mini and had to see the dealer for brake problems like fading and brake oil leakage of the... Hayes calipers.

Well I have two gsa's my 16 have had zero problems with it 48,000 miles. My 2021 GSA came with Brembo brakes and no problems with it either. I wonder how it seems the RU-vidrs get the problem bikes one of my other motorcycles my GTL supposedly the big problem with them was they pulled left according to all the RU-vidrs. Never saw that problem at all with mine. I have a Jeep Gladiator that if you look at some RU-vidrs all they can do is find problems with it. So I wonder if part of the way you draw an audience is the controversy of a warranty problem with the bike

Hi, would you or anybody reading this know the Torque Values for the 3 off T40 bolts that retain both halves of the caliper together? I think I might have an issue here and wish to check the tightness. If I don't find them (Asked Hayes US - didn't want to give me them. Understand) If i don't find them, I shall probably break them apart anyway, assess (probably o rings each side) and replace with SS bolts and thinking of a torque value for these M8? bolts of 20NM
@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis Год назад
Hi, now that answer I don’t have. You don’t mention which brand Hayes or Brembo, but you could ring the manufacturer and ask them directly and ask them for the rebuild kit at the same time. If it’s leaking Hayes calipers and your bike is less than 4 years old, I would suggest ringing your local dealership as they will probably replace them under a warranty recall job. There really should be no issue as the Hayes have a well known issue. If it’s Brembo you may well have to service them yourself Best wishes Carl

@@justthewayitis Thanks Carl. That's a great find. At the moment i have the calipers disassembled ( not split ) and replacing the o rings in the piston cavities. ( 1 compression seal and 1 fluid seal ). The seal kit is circa £35 for each caliper. I found one of the seals quite perished. Surprising as the bike as only covered 12k. Thinking about it. I will first tighen the bolts up then to 24NM to check if any have loosen ( again, don't see why but I am the 2nd owner!) Then I may decide to removed one by one and replace with the M8x25mm SS bolts bolts and tighen to 24NM. Thanks for coming back with torque setting. I did a quick search but couldn't find anything. Then the plan is to reassemble and fluid up/bleed and see where I am. Hopefully won't need to split.
