Welcome to the final episode of Season 1! We've come a long way over the course of the last year and we're incredibly excited to usher in the next season and continue to grow this community. Make sure that you're subscribed + have notifications turned on so you never miss new videos and be sure to follow us on your favorite social media platforms (links below) for additional exclusive content.
We often look at a drum and immediately imagine what it should sound like based on the most obvious features, dimensions being the key. Deep drums should sound deep, right? And shallow drums should crank up nice and high, right? But what if the magic was in taking the opposite approach? In Ep. 52 (our final episode of Season 1!), we demonstrate how higher tunings with a deeper drum (a 14x7” Ddrum Vintone Nickel-Over-Brass, in this case) can offer a sound that might be more fitting for your ultra-articulate, high-tuned snare needs.
Drum Used: Ddrum Vintone Nickel-Over-Brass 14x7" with 2.3mm triple flange hoops
Heads: Evans G1 batter // Evans Snare Side 300 (3mil)
Wires: Puresound Custom Pro Steel 24-strand
Hosted by: Cody Rahn
Production: Ben O'Brien Smith @ Cadence Independent Media

And as you've pointed out, those deep snares reverberate nicely when the heads are tuned lower and the batter head is slightly higher than the reso. The drum sounds like it has reverb in it when you crack the rim-shot.

After years of trying different combinations, I finally settled on a Tama SLP Big Black Steel Snare (8x14) with a medium pitch on the snare head and about where you ended up finally with the batter head, though I use an Evans HD dry batter head (2 ply) and 2 Drum Tacs. I play classic and modern rock, and I love the crack with the fat bottom end. Maybe a drier sound than some prefer, but I think it sits perfectly in the mix, live. So, I can fully relate to and appreciate this video. Great job!

I’ve got the same one dude!! Amazing snare, especially for $250. And in my opinion sounds better than my star classic chrome over brass snare that’s double the price! I run an Evans hybrid on top, remo ambassador on bottom, with 30 strand wires. That thing is MASSIVE

I love to crank a deeper snare drum tight. It does sound high and ringy in my face, but having listened to friends hit my snare when I'm back in the room, there's a depth and fatness coming from the deep shell. Combine that with the higher pitch from the head, and you've got a great versatile sound.

Drummer G3 Basically the 5 mil head will be less sensitive and better for a Hard Rock setting where your not too concerned with sensitivity. But depending on the drum you might be able to get plenty of sensitivity out of that 5 mil snareside head. Compared to each other the 3 mil head will be more sensitive. If you’re a HEAVY HITTER and you’re breaking your bottom heads go with a 5 mil for sure.

To me, snare depth vs pitch has always held a bit of a misunderstanding among drummers. People equate a snare like a 402 or a bell brass with “big, enormous sound”, meanwhile you can turn on an alternative record from the 90s and hear these HUGE sounds from piccolos, etc. To me, it’s all about stick articulation and ghost notes. A deeper drum will have a little more dynamic range in that dept. where a shallow drum will keep the snares “speaking” at almost any articulation. Consequently, my drum selection or recommendation to another drummer always includes those considerations.

Given the same batter and snare side tensions, do you find a deeper drum to feel a little more forgiving? For jazz, I want to be pitched on the higher side. With a 5.5" deep drum, this can feel almost too tight with too much getting thrown back at me. However, my 6.5" drum feels like there is "in your face" happening. Sorry for the non-scientific wording. I just hate having a drum that is too loud, bitey, and causing me to play tentatively. That bite seems to be less when the drum is deeper even with identically tensioned heads.

Your guys' videos are always awesome! I know everyone's a critic, but I'd think about EQ'ing the voice by reducing a few db around 3-5k Hz. Sounds like it's a little too high. Other than that, these videos are dope

@jordankozelka9000
@jordankozelka9000 5 лет назад
So you mention that you always need to even out the tuning on the lugs when pitching a head down due to friction between the head and the shell. I've always put a little wax on my bearing edges to help reduce that friction, but I know Cody said in a previous video that he doesn't do anything like that. Any particular reason why not?

I second the notion of waxing the bearing edges of wood drums. I changed heads on a birch snare (inexpensive Tama Silverstar) and waxed the edges with high-quality furniture wax, buffing until the edge was polished. I was amazed at the difference in the sound, the drum sounded more dynamic and precise in tone. I'm going to wax the edges of my toms on that set when I change heads. The birch Silverstar line (now discontinued) is a bit of a sleeper, made in China but really nice shells and edges.

Not entirely on topic but.. Funny you should mention the Garibaldi snare. I currently have my eye on one, but not sure if it is worth it’s limited range. I do have an upcoming big band gig with ToP etc charts. Perhaps it better to simply experiment with what I currently have (1-5x14 Vintage Recording Custom wooden & 1-5x14 new Pearl Modern Utility aluminum). That being said, does anyone know if $725 CA for a Garibaldi snare is a fair asking price?
@crimsun7186
@crimsun7186 5 лет назад
That's pretty much the Gavin Harrison "secret". He prefers to use 14" snare drums as side snares, while his main snare is a 12" tuned lower. Bill Bruford is one that would always tune his snares high, so they could cut through the band.

Oh man, yeah that's gonna limit things. If you want to retain punch and durability but need the high tuning, something more like an Evans Power Center or a Remo CS will be a better choice for sure. Anything with more plies or muffling at the edge is going to choke at a lower tension and lose that pop.

Dunno why I haven't seen this one as long as I've been watching. I spent a long time chasing deep & fat and hating the way it felt. I kind of think a deep drum cranked and muffled is more what I was looking for all along. It's certainly easier to get by with minimal muffling to kill the ring on a cranked drum. Super low tunings that honk note is just impossible to muffle without killing the whole drum.

@@SoundsLikeADrum The easiest solution would be to notch out that requency by few dB with tight Q-width in post processing. 🙂 (Though that would violate your principle of no eq) I don't know what gear you use but I've heard that many low to medium price point interfaces suffer from 4k buildup. Your close mics don't seem to suffer from this though, so that would point to room issues.
