Exposure matched would be good too. It's good to know the light loss, but we'd be properly exposing and we can then see just the light wrap differences visually.

Exactly

Yea was just about to comment this. The difference in material is desired more for the shadow/specular quality changes than the exposure.

Maybe next time you could match the exposures of the diffusions. That would have been a useful portion to this video.

please do this! because this will really show the difference in look. the loss in exposure is just a problem that we must know about butt it is not the look that the diffusion makes. :D

Or if matching exposure for each is too much, you could just show the waveform/RGB parade for each so anyone can see the differences, no matter what screen they're watching on.

This is one of the best channels for what I do... there are a lot of channels that go over lighting but not in depth like this. This is exactly what I need!! Thanks guys! Suscribed!

Great comparisons, thanks for putting this together! Re: the distance of the source, next time you play with this, have a look at the rag from the subject side - the more you back off the light fixture the less you’ll ‘see’ the source through the rag

1/2 grid is cinematic. At least with the exposure settings.

Great video! In the future, a video showing the changes when moving the diffusion closer and further from the subject would be informative too!

Assuming even illumination of the whole sheet of diff then you're making the source larger in relation to the subject, as well as increasing the intensity of the light on its subject due to the inverse square law. Generally speaking it means that you'll be able to get a bit more wrap around the subject the closer the diff is, however you will get more harsh hot spots of highlight on your subject if you're using thinner diffs (250 vs. 216 for instance)

Can you test 8x8 diff. Like full grid, half grid, quarter grid, china, muslin/or bleached mus and whatever else is common in the industry

Keaton Loudamy when I was making this I thought about a cloth episode so it’s definitely a plan. Soon enough I will

Yea, I'm stoked for this. Maybe the difference between an 8x8 ultra bounce and bleached and unbleached muslin.

LEE has a free Diffusion Comparator (with Arri lights) app with videos and if you're using Arri lights, the Photometrics app is pretty fantastic to nerd out too.

oh, and spoiler's for your next grid video. To my knowledge, or what I've been told/in my experience, the tightness of the grid pattern, or how heavy/light the grid is, increases/decreases the directionality of the light.

How the heck could really appreciate and evaluate the light quality when you did not expose accordingly for each and every diffusion?

Looking forward to an understanding about the difference between grid and just diffusion. I'm coming to this from the stills side, and I've never seen someone explain what grid cloth does different. Keep up the good work.
