Welcome to Crimson Guitars (CG)HQ ru-vid.com.... In this episode, Ben is using ancient wood from a UK bog to make a truss rod plug for ancient wood from New Zealand. A match made in heaven.
This guitar is being made using a very soft wood and as such the neck is stabilised with both the usual truss rod and carbon fibre stiffening rods.

Rod Plug? Man, his first solo album after leaving the seminal '70s prog /folk outfit Bog Oak Truss was a work of genius.

*CLANG CLANG CLANG* (Ben walks into the shop) Once again, Ben defies the odds and gets it done. Very nice. Personally, I wouldn't have done it any different. That hole placement is critical to truss access.

To solve the issue with the front of the plug lifting while gluing it in place, try using the back end of the drill bit (you used to make the hole) in the plug hole to allow you to provide the downward pressure you need without worrying about collapsing the plug itself.

I've built guitars for a hobby. I know what it feels like to have good days and off days. And I can tell you right now: yes it is fun, and yes your off days are still better than my best days. I only wish you had a channel when I was still building. Might have learned a lot of good tricks.

Loving this build, as a UK expat in NZ. Swamp kauri can be stunningly beautiful but also hell to work with as it is so soft. With the plug, I would suggest using a lathe and pen blank piece of bog oak in pen jaws on a Nova chuck or similar. Use a jacobs chuck to drill a small pilot hole in the blank and then turn the blank down to size, insert it and then drill out to size with ever-increasing bit sizes. Using the lathe gives more of a guarantee of hole and outer diameter being centred and avoids the stress a plug cutter puts on the timber as it cuts.

@spudpud-T67 Год назад
Just drilling a series of smaller pilot holes will help if he doesn't have a lathe. A lathe as you describe would be best though. I used a lot of gummy swamp kauri, not much plain as it tends to disintegrate with time. My dad cleared our swamp in the 60's and had a fire that went for 6 weeks just burning swamp kauri. I love how they say it's so expensive when I'd just go and grab a piece out of our stop bank when I wanted some.

Keep in mind that a radial drill press (adjustable throat depth) inherently has the potential of flex when pressure is exerted for the cut. That and the shaking of the machine and/or table may have entered into your challenges making those hollowed plugs.

I don't know what it is but I just find it so enjoyable to watch other people wood work. I do wood working myself but seeing other people have successes and struggles along the way too is fun to watch. Thank you for sharing this journey, I am really loving this build.

Glue some facing of thin birch plywood or acrylic onto the bog oak when your drilling/ cutting the plug perpendicularly to the grain. It will hold the fibres on top together.

Interested in how you cleared or will clear the bottom of the hole to expose the end of the truss rod. And I presume that the alignment of the plug and rod must be spot on to allow the hardware to index.

I put a variable power supply on my drill press,that way I can control the speed with that instead of changing belts. There's probably something wrong with that method, if not manufacturers would put it as a feature, but over a year now and it's still running strong.

The real trick would be to find a plug cutter with the same inner and outer dimensions as a piece of pipe or something, that could be inserted in the kerf left behind to support the sides during the second centredrill operation?
@Ed_Robson_1970
@Ed_Robson_1970 Год назад
I did something similar to your plug cutting the other day when I started experimenting with making my own wooden control knobs. Best results happened when I drilled first then went in with a forstner, ,and finally I used a hole cutter that was bigger than I wanted to cut through, then I basically mounted the piece on a drill bit and used my drill like a lathe and sanded back to the diameter that I wanted.
@stresslesspropertysolution466
Hi, I think I would have done it the same way but when glueing I would have put a drill bit in the hole for leverage and put the masking tape on the drill bit to stop the plug from squashing.

I'd have used a much larger diameter 'tube cutter'...then drilled the hole in the centre, but not all the way through. Remove from pillar drill.....cut it off. Clamp the end of the 'tube' in the lathe....then reduced the diameter with emery cloth as it spins. Hope you understand my methodology.

Instead of fully drilling the hole on the pillar drill, I would have probably just drilled a tiny pilot, so you could go back and finish it straight, and still have an easier time of it.

Ben, I feel you`re wiping/blowing away far to much dust (which can be carcinogenic for those who don`t know) some of which will be going into the air. I got a wee hand held cordless vacuum cleaner & modified it using some gaffa tape & a hose, just for the small amounts of fine dust. I did this for working in peoples homes, drilling into brick walls especially & it reduces dust (landing on a dust sheet mind you) by a huge amount, filters need cleaning & washing regularly mind!

You know that whole 'don't hit metal with your relatively expensive and nice drill bit' thing? Yea... did that once with the tip of a screw (because I was impatient and an idiot). Knocked the spurs right off my nice 3/8" bit. Not sure I've ever burnt $15 quite so fast. Least the centerpoint wasn't trashed.

It seems to me that it would have been much easier to make the plug in a lathe with a collet. The collet would have provided great support for the part while drilling. Is there some reason you didn't go that way?
