I think what you're doing is gonna work, simply because you said you have to disassemble and move it. The curved edge against the round log is a better fit, like you said, the water doesn't get too much in between the joints. Awesome Job, Thanks. Wish you and your family all the best.

When you put the spline in the top of each log you could bed it with a sealer to stop the water penetration into the joint of the lower log.
@GregsGarage
@GregsGarage 4 года назад
I like the tenon approach because of the direction the wood will expand over time. The looseness of the tenon will allow the planks to move horizontally and the lack of vertical restraint will allot the post to move vertically without incumbrance. The coped ends like your model has will likely require more frequent maintenance to keep the joints tight. This is coming from book learning, not practical cabin building, so take it for what it's worth.

I have no woodworking experience. But watching you is inspiring. My one comment would be when you cut them off at a straight edge you don’t have to carve a rounded notch. Could you make two angled cuts? That would cut down on how much carving you have to do. Just a thought.

louiseleu you should probably tone down the verbiage. Laughing at someone for a statement... not a great way to communicate and give “friendly advise”. To give an absolute about something that you have no direct knowledge of is quite arrogant and presumptive don’t you think. This man is on site. He is touching, seeing, even smelling his surroundings including this tree that seems to have you incredulously mocking him. Your attitude is perplexing.

I was watching another video on youtube and the guy said something that..clicked for me.. he said "Most people have ideas.. but don't know where to start or get confused on how to start.. building... so my suggestion is.. start at something.. either it works for or it fail then you sit think and start over.. lessons learnt and be back at it..another way"... so looking at your video ..am motivated to say.. you're on the path to have something more then courage to do just that..you honing to be more...and honoring those who aided you in achieving just that. Suggestion: Take short 5 min breaks.. 2 hrs of work..then 5 mins of break.. enjoy your surroundings.. eat some dry fruit (armonds..wallnuts, with dried plums n berries) drink it down with some lemon mint tea or ginger tea lots of fiber and lots of liquid energy..then back to work.....after wards when relaxing.. take a long shower..then try some herbal wild yam ointment or spray after a hard heavy lifting work day on those aching muscles and spine & shoulder muscles..or have the Mrs do that.. before going to bed...you'd be relaxed and body ready for another day. Stay safe.. Keep on going.. GOD BLESS.

It seems to me that chinking is one of the lightest part of any cabin . I recommend dyeing wood it is cheaper and mixes well with water and has many different colors but doses not help to preserve the wood. I also recommend adding some wax to the logs before

Move to door to extreme left or right as you will have a much more useable internal footprint. Use bicycle tire inner tube for chinking or any tube rubber. Char the wood for the window frames and go with the maple for everything else. As the sides aren’t structural walls and will have notches that hold them between the corner posts I don’t think you need to bolt or screw them down. These are my thoughts and what I plan to do on a much smaller build at one end of our property.

Also on your vertical joints you can do the same thing with a flat on your post with a 2x4 spline connecting the post to the wall log. When the building is at the final site you can seal all the splines. You can cut a small flat on the top and bottom of each wall log and put some type of a weather strip material between to seal the joint (foam rod, ect) - keeps it easy to take apart, yet weatherproof.

He's built a cabin, outdoor kitchen, & bathhouse with hand tools, all by himself, using materials from his land. He made chinking with clay that is on his property, so it's all natural material. You might pick up a few tips to help with your build. I don't know how close he is to where you are, but I think he's Northwest of Thunder Bay.

One method I have seen to fit logs together was to simply stack one on top of the other. Then run a chainsaw in the gap, kerfing out the places where they contact each other. Keep letting them settle together until the fit is nice. Similar to how you ran your pencil at the 31 minute mark between the logs to scribe the fit. Saves lifting the log into place several times to check.

Do the curved radius for the initial build, then do the spine method after you make your move, for the permanent build. Also use a tar or caulking on the final build to better water proof the logs.

I have a cabin where I had the chimney at the lowest point on the roof the snow pressed so that water came in through the small crack that formed the pipe and ran down along the flue destroyed the floor. So I would recommend that you place it so you can get it up close to the roof knob. Talk to someone who knows this in your country so you can avoid hassle later. I have seen those who have pulled the flue obliquely upwards and then straight upwards but do not know if it works. So I think the location is better at the long wall when the middle of the cottage.
@TrustinTimber

@@TrustinTimber Changes alway happen...LOL!!! Folks often ask me why I spend so much time in the "design phase," of a project? Reply: "...Failing to plan...is planning to fail..." "Changes," now in your design phase is where change is supposed to happen...NOT!!!...after the construction has started. Failing to have a complete set of blueprints (and/or better a scaled model like you're doing!!!) is just asking for trouble on a project. Many DIYers (aka a lot of "RU-vidrs") are way too much "design as you go" rather than planning well and not trying to reinvent the wheel... as they do it... As for your fireplace location, with your design as it is now, you could do something like a "downdraft" flue system to heat a bench, sitting area or bed? Try taking a look at 온돌 (Ondol) or 炕 (Kàng) technology for a guide to how this works. Drafting systems for fireplaces and stoves is one of the least well understood ancient technologies of Western wood/organic matter heating/cooking cultures. Most of what is (and was!!!) done in the Eastern cultures is considered "impossible!!!" by most Western experts. This only speaks to the disconnect in traditional understanding of combustion venting modalities and what can...and allegedly many think "can't" be done... I took note that your floor boards, as they are now, will someday be a subfloor. Since this is a screwed off floor the only challenge I can foresee is you may have screw heads popping off as the wood dries. Modern screws are too hard and snap off at the head overtime from wood movement and/or cyclic bending pressures. A floated and/or jointed floor does not suffer this challenge. As you have noted (and learned) laying this with green wood is not the problem so many “modern” woodworkers and builders claim it will be. Also, oiling a floor on all sides and end sealing will also greatly mitigate any expansion contraction if done properly. I was not clear on whether you actually bothered to take note of or concern over the woods orientation? With understanding of how the wood grew in the tree so that the wood is only bark side up for horizontal placement and top of tree up for posts. This orientation attention with all the tops of the trees oriented in a proper direction to one another...be that "tip to tip” (合掌 - gassho - “praying hands” method), or "follow the leader"...seldom to never in a "divorced" butt to butt (aka: root to root) orientation...is very important to the woodworker of ancient times. Now it is seldom (if ever?) considered. Now wood is treated as if it is “plastic” and/or without regard to actual grain orientation, thus why so many “think?” green wood can’t be used for furniture, floor, or building a home… I look forward to following along on your adventure my friend...Stay safe and stay happy!!! j

I think the coped log ends are going to be fine for the initial build but when you take it down and rebuild it you might do some research into using a loose/feather tenon to put them back together. I’ve also seen a slit cut into the bottom and top of each log then when you put them together you drive a tight fitting board on edge into the slit. This ties everything together and helps to seal the gap. You could use a variation of that on the end of each log and the upright log. I’ve not seen the the slit/mortise done with all hand tools but the chainsaw would make short work of it. Hopefully you understand what I’m saying both techniques have actual names but I can only think of the loose tenon (feather) at the moment.

A curved radius in the top and a corresponding groove in the log below is a traditional Sandinavian approach, with the gap filled with moss. Wood breathes and equalizes its moisture content with the environment. I would not worry overmuch about wood rotting because it caught and held water, unless your environment is already so humid that the wood is at risk to begin with. I suspect the reason that historic builders didn't use the spline approach you're describing because making the boards was extremely labor intensive. With the effort to produce the spline boards as an acceptable burden, I think it's otherwise quite viable.

@stuartb9194
@stuartb9194 4 года назад
It looks like you maybe light on sheer strength. It is post and beam frame so unless your pin joints to the frame are able to resist turning forces then it's up to the walls to brace the frame and give rigidity to the structure. The two end walls should provide that in one direction, especially if you dont cut windows into them, but in the direction of the glass wall you only have one thin log stack wall on the corner to brace in that direction. Maybe some form of bracing in the roof may help? It would need a more detailed assessment, but that's how it appears from the model. Excellent model though, no doubt a very useful tool in the design process.

@@TrustinTimber you should be able to test it to some extent by trying to wrack the model and feeling which direction is loose or not. It should give you a better feel for it, even if it's not directly related to the full scale build.

do not know how much snow you have there in the winter, usually it is better to have the chimney near the highest point on the roof due to the snow pressure.
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 3 года назад
wow, That's so obvious now that you mention it. Thanks. We do get a lot of snow but not like in the mountains. Maybe 2 feet max by late winter. Now what? Do I run the chimney internally up and out of the centre or redesign?

I think the spline would rot over the long term even with a sealant. I think you could use the chainsaw mill to take off the minimum needed to make them sit flat for each log in the walls to save time.

Bravo! Well produced. Do tell, (after having checked the comments): what sort of wood(s?) are you using for your model work? It seems fairly soft and easy to work with a knife... Model is a great idea. The spline idea sounds like it would work IN CONJUNCTION with chinking as it will facilitate the subsequent relocation...
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 3 года назад
Thank you. All the wood is white pine. These are from all the dead trees that were suffocated out when the trees around them grew bigger faster. I often only get 1 or two reasonable pieces per tree that are strait enough and the right size so it took a while to collect. The rest becomes good firewood though.

I saw that. where you trimmed the end and didn't waste any, for you know to keep all you need until the end. Why wait for the log to sit, you can fell the tree, mill it then let it sit and acclimate. I was going to comment on the full 2" thick planks but your in a huge resource, so no problems with saving a few board feet there. I probably would have cut the planks at 1.5 inches though, I do like heavy wood though, so either way really. Models are great, I build them for my timber frame work, along with the hot glue I put a small screw in the joint, I had one blow off a table in February, once, my back was turned and it sounded like a bunch of icicles hitting the floor, it was sad.

Had to add from my other channel Good point on the spline catching water, be weary of the water that would get caught in trench, I would opt for the traditional U method. Is there a dry chinking you could use for when you take the structure down and recycle it? I am not a log builder much more traditional timber framing, and have used heavy timber in plank on frame construction, where the planks are run up and down, with a spline and peg system to give the wall a shear effect. Do you have any method of bracing in your walls? The butted post and log wall may not be a full solution. As for the floor, yeah it will shrink after the roof goes on but the second layer will solve that issue. Its not fine furniture work, its a sub floor. Some people over think things. Don't worry.
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 4 года назад
Yeah, 1.5 would have probably been a bit better but I'm kind of depending on them structurally as well as a backup;)
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 4 года назад
Great points. For chinking the first round I'm just going to use sphagnum moss. There is lots growing around and I have been harvesting patches here and there and drying it out. Wall bracing is something I still need to work on. Thanks for the reminder. Any suggestions?
@downeastprimitiveskills7688
@downeastprimitiveskills7688 4 года назад
@@TrustinTimber Hummm, typical log structures are tied at the corners and mostly full stacked logs to the top plates, in part providing the wall shear. Yet with your up dated more window approach is where I see a minor issue with the shear/bracing. You may be okay. once you get it up and going you will see how it fairs. It looks like you will put up the frame then infill with logs, so screw on some temporary bracing until the logs get put into place. As I walk around on a timber frame it sways with just the workers moving about and as all the other systems are applied boards etc, it stiffens up. If you have interior walls they will add shear, and or you can apply some braces to interior post and tie beams to add to the system for additional shear. Most loads come from wind and it looks to be fairly protected in the pine stand. All contributing factors. I like the moss chinking. I have often wondered if a timber frame wall system of infill of dried moss and clay would work for a wall insulation system, straw has always been a choice and wood chips and clay in a slip form system, ah but I digress. I may do a cabin build for the utube community some day, a collaboration between my two channels'

On your notches. Make them concave. The outside should always be the tightest. Noticed on the seal log you guys were trying to make it flat. You don't want that. The weight of everything will tighten it up
@TrustinTimber

Kevin Allen what the seal log? The bottom log?
@kevinallen206
@kevinallen206 3 года назад
@@TrustinTimber yes that would've been the log that went around the floor joist. But all your notches should be that way. That way the outside of the notch will only get tighter with time and weight.

I would urge using the tongue and groove approach to your infill rather than the cutout you discuss here and use in the model. That curve is going to be much more demanding than cutting the tenon on the ends of the logs. The fit into the mortise should not be so tight that you need to drive it in. That is support to keep the logs registered, it's not anything that should be a force fit. I also think that those curve pieces will prove fragile in a process of disassembly and re-assembly, much more than standard tenons.

Trustin Timber I have seen adjustment post on vertical logs also because the horizontal logs will shrink in diameter. Our log cabin sat for three yrs before assembly and it still shrunk enough to screw up widow trim and door openings once we stacked and finished it the final time!
