Drywall dust IS the worst, it's not just you who hates it! Plus doing this work overhead day after day is not easy. Great job!!! And I love your tip about spraying the plastic before taking it down - brilliant! Can't wait for your cabinet building video!

Those wooden folding TV trays are the unsung heroes of moving and settling in!😂 Also investing in a household steam machine cleaner is BRILLIANT for awkward jobs like the tracks for the sliding doors, window sills, around the bathroom corners and joints and icky places. I have the McCULLOCH MC1385 Deluxe Canister Steam Cleaner from Amazon and it's been my workhorse, it blasts everything with hot steam, good and super clean and EASY just wiping away. Pricey but I will buy it again when this one wears out lol.🤷‍♀️ We're all cheering you on Casey and Alan!🎉

You’re a boss!! And dry wall dust is ridiculous and discouraging even if you pay someone else to create it for you. I’m so enjoying your journey🥰

Loving your home updates. You remind me of my late husband and myself tackling many projects. A few years ago we flooded and had to redo our kitchen among other other areas. Fortunately I had a fellow church member who is a carpenter that built my cabinets from scratch. What I wanted to share with you is he recommended that I replace the lower cabinets with drawers instead and it was the best thing I’ve ever done. I have 16 drawers of varying heights & depths and it so much more efficient than traditional cabinets with shelves. I have bead-board cabinets and love the look. Looking forward to your progress and successful finish. Have a blessed day.

Your kitchen is coming along beautifully. Don't let drywall mud discourage you. I know it's a mess to deal with, but look at that beautiful ceiling. I'm excited to watch you build the kitchen cabinets. Again, don't get discouraged if you mess up (it's just wood). Regroup, rethink and git'er done. I just finished a huge project of staining the brick on our home with the help of my son. The estimates were $3200K. We RU-vidd it and got it done for $400 in 4 days with our labor and many, many trips to Home Depot and Lowe's. The white stain has transformed our home. We love it. I can't wait for your next video.

@@PatternScout Yes, labor is the most expensive part. Labor is something I can do, however, when it comes to plumbing, electrical, structural and brute strength I always hire out. It's definitely not worth it to hurt yourself. Alan inspired me to lay down my own flooring and I am beginning that project today in my master bedroom!

Something important to remember when renovating a specific area is the budget. Make sure to have a spreadsheet of everything you’ll need for the project separated into categories eg drywalling, electricity, plumbing, tiling, painting,hardware, cabinets, countertops, miscellaneous. And sub categories of supplies and tools in each one. Also factor in a reserve of about 15%. This helps if you’re learning on the job so to speak. Strength to you both.

What a job! The meltdown is totally understandable. I used to be a house painter, and an ex of mine did renovations and I worked for him for awhile. Drywalling can be can be deceptively taxing and tiring (especially when you have to create essentially a sauna with plastic to contain the dust!), and you're doing an awesome job! 🙌 You should definitely treat yourself to a massage. ☺

For a newbie, I think your drywall turned out great! I discovered in my (pretty limited) drywall experience, that it's a matter of mudding and sanding until YOU are satisfied. Repeat, repeat, repeat. But once you're happy with the joints and add some wall texture, no one is the wiser! And yes, drywall dust is The Actual Worst because it's so damn fine and sticks to everything! As for DIY vids on RU-vid, I am SO GLAD that so many episodes (and segments) of This Old House are available. They're the best.
@PatternScout
@PatternScout 2 месяца назад
I feel like that is so true! Once I got into the process, I realized I could really add as many coats of the compound as I wanted to get it smooth, and each coat made it better!
@jcampbell100

As painters we had to do lots of drywall repairs, big and small. We had a sanding attachment for our shop vac that really helped with the dust. you can get various grit mesh for it. With your big shop vac it would have been quite awkward doing the ceiling unless you attached a longer hose however for any repairs you may be doing for the walls you might want to purchase that and several grit meshes. . You can get an adapter for the end of the hose that would fit the attachment. We had a smaller shop vac and could attach it to our ladder for higher work. We used it to pre sand all our walls before painting. Really handy. You are very brave and doing great.

Use undercoat paint on the ceilings before painting them with ceiling paint. That will hide any leftover blemishes and help the ceiling paint look smooth. Walls too. Its a step most people avoid due to costs but honestly it gives the whole thing a look of high class.

Dust is the absolute worst especially since you are living in your house, I feel your pain ☹️but really well done for persevering and just cracking on. I think you are so brave making the cabinets 👏👏

The kitchen is looking great, it may not feel like it but your hard work is paying off! To avoid drywall dust you can use a damp sponge to "sand" high spots. A big sponge, a small bucket of water (to clean the sponge and keep it damp), and a gentle touch is my preferred method, but for large areas it may not be as efficient. It's cheap ingredients if you just want to experiment with it. Keep up the good work and I'm really looking forward to your cabinet building.

I had to look up what soffits are. I have never heard the word before, but I now have improved my English vocabulary, which I'm very happy about, as I'm not a native English speaker and don't use the language regularly. After having seen a very short video on how to make them i wonder:what's the obsession with the color brown, but that too probably also comes from not being American. We always go for light colors here, probably because our very dark winters. Your dog must have had fun riding in the front in that cart at Home Depot. Prime views and smells, without any walking. He looked so cute. (Am I mistaking the sex here? If I am I do apologize.) Yours, Ann

I regularly spray WD-40 on the inside and outside of my sliders’ upper & lower tracks in this house. It’s amazing how well they slide afterwards. It also somewhat discourages bugs in spring & fall. I used to use a wet rag to smooth dried drywall seams rather than sanding due to an extreme dislike of the sanding dust. My Heart’s Dearest always said my finishing was better than his! He might have been just trying to encourage me, but he seldom gives either criticism nor praise.😂 I once had a complete meltdown after a day long effort at removing trim and prepping to do wallpaper. Do Not recommend doing wallpaper of any type! It’s a pain to do, doesn’t last forever, and is a worse pain to remove when it begins to look shabby-or starts peeling off the walls/ceiling in places.😾

It sounds like you're sliding glass doors need to have their wheels replaced. If you take the doors out of the slider you'll see that there are small wheels in the bottom and possibly the top of the doors. They need to be replaced periodically. It's usually an easy fix.
