I have been researching the First Gen Sequoia and am close to buying one. I want to do some limited off roading and some hauling. I've watched some of your videos. Thanks for those. So, my questions: I want to get some lift but not a lot. Maybe 1.5 to 2.5 inches up on 4 corners. More interested in towing ability and a firmer ride. Would new shocks like the Bilstein 5100's in front do the trick? Will I need to upgrade the suspension too? In the rear, would air bags inserted into the coils do the trick? I don't necessarily want to mess with the anti-sway bars. Maybe newer, stouter coils for the rear would help too. I want the truck level at all times, maybe slightly higher in the rear when not loaded. I'd like to be able to tow maybe up to 5,000#. I get that you like a rear diff lock for 3 way locking but I am not sure I will need that as I don't plan to do tough off road stuff. Are 10 ply tires recommended for towing? thanks a lot and happy trails!!

Hi Josh. Awesome videos. I decided to mod my old 2006 sequoia like you did. I want to add the ARB rear springs but already have new 5100s on there. I don't offroad so will I really need the downtravel? Or will the 5100s be fine for road use and occasional light off road?

Nice video! My air suspension on my 2006 Sequoia works intermittently and gets very bumpy at times. Hoping to solve the problem with just replacing shocks. I don’t want a super jacked up vehicle though. How much clearance is there with these shocks? If it’s crazy high, is there a different shock you could recommend to have it support all the weight but look fairly normal? Thanks!!

Yeah, that’s a great question and I meant to address it in the video but the quick video was already getting too long. The OME shocks are a little stiffer but not harsh. I thought the truck would corner like a drunk elephant after I removed the link. But honestly, I can’t really tell the difference. Probably the new shocks are a little stiffer. I’m happy with it for sure. As of now, I have no plans to replace the link I cut off.

Got a question I put a 2.5 inch lift on my 05. The entire front end except upper control arms have been replaced including steering rack. The vehicle is very darty on the road you have to stay constantly locked in on steering. Would you guys think it need adjustable uppers for more caster. I know someone has ran into this the front end is completely new (except upper) and drives like crap fully in spec alignment wise.
@1stgenoffroad
@1stgenoffroad Год назад
We will always recommend aftermarket upper control arms for any lift over 2". I like SPC UCAs for their adjustability. When the steering is twitchy, it is likely a caster problem. Caster changes when you lift a vehicle and the higher you lift it the more caster change you get. Google search the effects that caster has on oversteering. SPC upper control arms will correct the caster and get it back where you need it to be. Link for SPC UCAs: www.1stgenoffroad.com/store/p146/SPCUCAs/Tundra/Sequoia.html

I love you're videos. You have inspired me to make my 02 ac tundra more trail worthy. I've have always wanted a double cab 1st gen for awhile. My question is should I keep my ac or get a double cab. I'm worried i will be limited with want I can do offroad with a db because of the bad turning radius and longer wheel base. I travel on narrow rocky trails in colorado. The problem with the ac is the back seat is getting to small for my daughter but she rarely rides in the back, maybe twice a year when I take the family camping. What would you do?
@1stgenoffroad655
@1stgenoffroad655 5 лет назад
Hey bud, glad you like the videos. The dc is wider, taller, longer, heavier, and as you mentioned, has a terrible turning radius. I love my dc, but I live in Texas and use mine in mud and sand on the beach, wide open spaces. If I needed a trail rig for Colorado, I’d go with an AC. There’s still plenty of room in the back for your daughter and you’ll have a much more agile rig for all those rocks, low hanging branches and tight turns.

Thank you for the references. I have come across many suspension systems where they are not sequoia specific but the first generation tundra and sequoia are the same frame, correct? So with your experience, have you found any suspension system for a first generation tundra not work on a 1st generation sequoia?
@1stgenoffroad
@1stgenoffroad 6 лет назад
The front ends at exactly the same. Anything that will work on a tundra Tony end will work on a sequoia front end. The rear is totally different. The sequoia has coils and shocks and the tundra has leaf springs and a different set of shocks. The rear end of a sequoia is more comparable to an 80 series land cruiser.

I just got a 3 inch lift to my 1st gen sequoia. I was curious if you feel the need to add longer bump stops in the rear to prevent the tires rubbing under compression in the rear? I am searching around for extended rear bump stops but I have not found anything.

It always had coils. If you’re looking to go from airbags to traditional springs, you need to remove the pump and airbags. Remove the fuses that service the pump and sensors. Would extended links for rear and front help with down travel??
@1stgenoffroad
@1stgenoffroad 6 лет назад
You need to go up AND down. So extended links would help with down travel but make full compression worse. Besides, I really haven’t missed the links. Maybe if I did heaving towing. But even now I can haul my goat hauler. About 2000lbs, with no problem.
@12scars
@12scars 6 лет назад
Extending the links keeps the sway control rate the same, it does nothing for wheel travel. The two sides of the axle are still tied together.

With your Sequoia do you hear strong plastic sound in your car every time you hit a bump? Like a bunch of rattles and whatnot

Nope
@beterz
@beterz 6 лет назад
1stgenoffroad you think it could be bad struts in the rear for it rattle like that?
@1stgenoffroad
@1stgenoffroad 6 лет назад
Yeah, that’s a definite possibility. Is it air suspension or traditional coils and shocks?
@beterz
@beterz 6 лет назад
1stgenoffroad it's air suspension

Yeah. I wonder if the pumps out or the air bags are done.

@1stgenoffroad 6 лет назад
Yes. Hopefully before the end of the summer. That will be a video too.
@MRTano512
@MRTano512 6 лет назад
Is the locker going to affect the ATRAC? In your video the rear wheel spins when you loose drop on the shock, shouldn't the ATRAC have corrected that and applied the brake to rear wheel and direct power to the non-spinning rear wheel? Or was that for demo purposes? Also, did you change the springs in the rear as well?
@1stgenoffroad
@1stgenoffroad 6 лет назад
Hey buddy. I have a 04. ATRAC didn’t happen until 05. Good point though. I could have applied the brake and gas and that would have shifted some power from one wheel to the other. I didn’t do that. The locker will probably be a Harrop E locker.
@harmonize209
@harmonize209 6 лет назад
1stgenoffroad not to be a ass but im pretty sure all sequoia has atrac. I have a 02 limited that has atrac as you can see in my video. Just stick in 4L and low gear and injoy. Dont let off gas pedal when tire spin and let the atrac do its job. Now go out there and try it.

No. 01-04 had conventional t- case and standard traction control. One of the reasons 05'-07' is more sought after.

can you get the OME kit for 1st Gen Tundra ?
@1stgenoffroad
@1stgenoffroad 5 лет назад
OME doesn’t make a AAL for the rear anymore. This is about as close as you can get: www.1stgenoffroad.com/store/p177/Tundra3/1Lift.html#/

Josh Embry I was looking into lifts and found your page and am inspired ... I was ordering some 16 inch rims because that’s what fits currently with stock shocks.. with the 16’s would you suggest a certain size of lift or should I go bigger on the rims if I wanna lift it?
