Ep.65 [HOW TO] Paint Custom Graphics on a Model Car

I have been a sign tech for over 25 years. I know all about pinstriping, either painting by hand or laying down vinyl. I can truly appreciate this type of custom work. Beautiful to behold. Thanks for posting this. Frank was a master of his craft.

I watch your videos all the time you have some great techniques. Here is a tip I developed on vinyl tops. I lay the styrene strips first, then I decant primer. I use those home depot foam paint sticks (remove the stick) cut into smaller pieces. Then dab the primer on. The pointed edge on them gives you control to go right up to the trim without hitting it . Then I paint it. It gives a very real scale looking texture . I have also been successful in using the foam they stuff seats with. it's a little finer closer texture but it works great. I use the testors primer as it stays wet long enough to work in the texture till it starts to get tacky . Let it dry, and paint. I never thought texture paint looked scale. Thanks for your videos.

Beautiful work! Having access to real automotive paint makes the process easier but the real key to something like this is the initial prep. Without it, the risk of tape pulling up underlaying colors very high. In addition, you have to use high quality materials. Don't skimp and use cheap tape! If you plan on doing some taping over a clear coat, your best bet is to use a catalyzed clear, meaning it needs a hardener to dry. Then follow the directions to when it is safe to remask. It can be done without automotive paints, but it takes longer for the clears to fully cure.

That car turned out freaking awesome... Now, dull coat the wheels to give it that aluminum look, slap a "JEG'S" logo on the door and the bonnet and you will have Jegg Coughlin's pro stock dragster... Amazing final product...
