That’s hilarious about the antler I thought I saw that correctly. At least it was a clean hole and not a break.

Not surprised you fellas found the 338rpm useful, since for over the past 100 years the 9.3x62 has done it all in Europe & Africa. Great content, enjoy your adventures very much. Thank you.

Love hearing the information you guys share. I have been shooting mule deer and elk with a 168 grain Barnes TTSX since 2008 and every single animal I have killed has performed just like yours did.

OMG, great content. I recently bought a Tikka 6.5 CM and elected to shoot Barnes TTSX and it's a tack driver. THANK YOU for the confirmation that this is a great bullet. I will feel a lot more confident when hunting COUES Whitetails on my Arizona hunts.

Supper Interesting Definitely looking forward to a Moose/Caribou hunt in Alaska. Hunted moose with my uncle in British Columbia when I was in 7th Grade it’s what got me hooked on hunting. Being an Oregon resident we don’t have an opportunity on Moose. So it would have to be Alaska for me.

Great content Brian. I have been shooting the Barnes TTSX for about 10 years now and won't shoot anything else. Very little meat damage and almost always complete pass through out of my 300 win mag and 180 grain TTSX. I bet you would see the same results with your 300 Weatherby with 180 grain as you have with the 338RPM using Barnes.

Great first podcast for this hunt break down. Just a quick question. Not trying to cause strife or division, just curious about yours and Ryan’s relationship. It seems like on most all y’all’s hunts, Ryan takes the first shot and often the bigger more mature animals. Why? Is it just the filming logistics? Or is there some agreement between the two of you? My apologies if you have already answered this question in the past. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait for pt 2.
@GrittyGearAndPodcast
@GrittyGearAndPodcast Год назад
Great question. There are multiple factors that play into who shoots the animal. We agreed a long time ago that whoever spots the animal gets to decide if they want to shoot it or not. But more often than not, it’s the camera situation that dictates who shoots the animal-the film of the hunt is the number one priority for me. If the situation allows for lots of setup time for the shot and I can ensure the film is being captured, I’ll shoot; if not, I’ll give up the animal in favor of ensuring we capture the film. I’ve been filming for years-Ryan hasn’t done any professional filming. And frankly, I don’t care that much-it’s a team thing-I want to do what’s best for the whole team, not just what’s best for me. If I kill a great animal but the film is mediocre or the film is completely botched, I feel like we failed as a team. Overall, I have more than my fair share of fantastic hunting moments and opportunities to shine-I don’t need more than I have. I am blessed with where I am. Getting to shoot first or to take the biggest animal is just icing on the cake when the opportunity arises. Thanks for asking. 😊

Listened to the podcast. Very informative! Caribou is on the bucket list, but you got me thinking about a float trip and adding moose (even though I have a Shiras already). The conversation about the rifles piqued my interest. You both mentioned 18" barrels, but why did you go that short? I have a 300WM and was considering putting a suppressor on it and trimming the barrel to 18 or 19, so I'm interested in you thoughts on going that short. Also, I only heard Ryan mention a brake, but why not run a suppressor on a caliber like the 338?
@GrittyGearAndPodcast
@GrittyGearAndPodcast Год назад
We are working on getting suppressors for our rifles. We like the short barrels because it doesn't stuck up as high and catch on brush when we are traipsing through it. We aren't usually shooting much over 400 yards. We try to get as close as possible. This allows us to go with a shorter barrel because we aren't shooting those long range shots. Thank you for tuning into our show! We genuinely appreciate the support.

Can you share what load you guys are using in your 6.5 RPM? Or are you shooting factory ammunition? I just started playing around with different loads and powders and haven’t found one my gun likes just yet.
@GrittyGearAndPodcast

We use the factory ammo. We mostly shoot the 140gr. Nosler Accubond and occasionally we will shoot the 140gr. Hornady Interlock.

Hey guys, another great and informative podcast. My question for you both would be what's your method for keeping that many game animals preserved back at camp without the meat going bad? I could imagine if it was maybe a few down u could put them in some type of cooler. But I believe that you mentioned between the 3 of you, u had 10 or 11, amazing tasks at hand. Thank u to your families who support you while u are gone.
@GrittyGearAndPodcast
@GrittyGearAndPodcast Год назад
The crucial part of meat care comes within the first 1 or 2 hours. We had fairly cold temperatures on this hunt which helps in preserving meat. Getting the hide off of the meat is the most important thing. The 2nd most important this is getting the meat separated from the carcass by taking off the quarters and allowing them to cool. Once the meat is cooled you can keep your meat preserved for a long time. Making sure it is separated and not piled up on top of each other each night continues to help preserve the meat. Heat wasn't an issue on this trip and that really helps with meat care. Heat and moisture are what will sour meat quickly.

Great podcast and recap of parts of the hunt that we have seen so far, even some that hit the cutting room floor. A breakdown of logistics and planning, costs of the certain important items and the transporter. How to get meat 🍖 and antlers back to the lower 48 is definitely a great topic of discussion. As many people have mentioned this is a bucket 🪣 list or dream adventure hunt and knowing what it involves will hopefully clear their minds and get the planning process started even if it takes 3 years. The 338 WBY RPM in that Backcountry 2.0 is a feat of engineering magic 🪄 especially if it doesn’t kick as hard as it sounds like it would. The Barnes TTSX bullets are legit, not perfect but lethal nonetheless. They retain about 90% of their weight as it drives on through with 4 petals folding back adding more surface area. If you have ever listened to The Backcountry Hunting podcast with Joseph VonBenedikt of now Idaho instead of Utah, he lauds the performance of the TTSX and the LRX (Long Range Xpanding) especially for heavy boned animals like moose, elk and grizzly bear 🐻

@@GrittyGearAndPodcast Excellent, I know that you mentioned that was going to be a future topic. I was agreeing and explaining how helpful that would be. That would help folks overcome that mental obstacle keeping them from doing such a long time dream hunt. You are welcome. I try not to miss it, especially the hunt films, whether there is a giveaway or not.
