Flaming Gorge is a massive reservoir on the Green River spanning the Utah/Wyoming border. In Episode 75 we'll share one of our all-time favorite regular boondocking locations, camping at the tip of a peninsula in Jug Hollow with water on three sides, and kayaking the broadest part of Flaming Gorge.
Filmed September 27-30, 2018.

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a RU-vid channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on RU-vid, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're weekend warriors just like you!
We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

Thank you Michael! How remote? My wife and I unfortunately both still smoke, and one evening at 8 pm we realized that we were running out of cigarettes. So we packed the dogs in the truck and drove the roughly 30 minutes each way on dirt and paved roads in the dark to the only gas station within 90 minutes of that campsite. We arrived right as they were closing up for the night, only to discover that...I left my wallet in the trailer. 🤯

Grand Adventure I’ve done that too. Used to smoke. Smoked for about 44 years. Thought I could never quit but gritted my teeth and gave it up. Takes about 3-4 days to withdraw. It is absolutely tough but very doable. So glad I’m free of that costly addiction now. Costly monetarily and costly to good health. Love your vids. You can only get there by boat, however, so it's either a long full-day paddle from where we're camped in this video, or you're kayak camping as we did in the photo set I've just linked to. One thing I recall about the Flaming Gorge area was the first time I went through the area on a "wandering" trip in 1989 that took me up that way from Vernal, Utah. After going across the bridge by the Flaming Gorge Dam visitor center, on US 191, I climbed up the mountains until the name "gorge" really struck home... there were drop-offs to the right, into a green valley that looked at least a mile deep, and no guard rail! Then, here came a serious thunderstorm, with me having no place to go for shelter. Lightning struck the road not 100 yards ahead. The rain drops were heavy and came in squall lines. Bad enough... but consider, I was driving an old 1964 Volkswagen van, with antennas for my CB and radios on the roof! I felt sure I was a rolling lightning rod, or that a gust of wind would blow me into that "gorge." Well, I tell you, I managed to white-knuckle it into Rock Springs where I found an open diner and consumed a lot of coffee before I could relax. I've been camping there many times since, but that first adventure gave me awe and reverence for the power of nature!
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 5 лет назад
Great story, Thomas!! And told quite well, too -- I can just picture that little VW van struggling up those grades in the storm, for they weren't exactly known for their horsepower. And as you know, that drive from Vernal to Rock Springs is still pretty spectacular!

I did Dinosaur Nation Park, and side trip to Flaming Gorge , back during the 2015 summer. I did the Dam tour, it was pretty cool, and hiked some trails east of the Dam on the green river, and some other trails in the Red Canyon area just west of the Dam. I think you must been further away from the Dam. Near the dam there is a whole lot more trees than in your video, perhaps you were up in Wyoming? I will have to come back and kayak. Your camping spot looked awesome. Enjoyed your video.
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 5 лет назад
Thank you! The Jug Hollow Road leaves US-191 about 5 miles north of Dutch John, and a couple of miles further from the dam. It's not that far as the crow flies, actually. (There's a link to a Google Map in the video description.) It's just north of Boars Tusk, which is the demarcation point between the canyons of Flaming Gorge to the south, and the high plains to the north. We were actually just on the Utah side of the state line, and we have paddled Horseshoe, Kingfisher and Red Canyons in the past. However, there's no lakeside dispersed camping accessible by RV anywhere on the canyons side of Flaming Gorge, so we opt for Jug Hollow. Thanks for watching!
@ericmoore6934
@ericmoore6934 5 лет назад
Thanks for the info. I just went to the google map link, and you're right, it's not far from the Dam, and in Utah. I was camping in Colorado that trip at the Dinosaur monument, and came up here for a day trip. I didn't venture far from the visitor center located at the dam. I recently bought a Kayak at the start of this past summer, so Im traveling to different lakes. I'm planning a trip to Elephant Butte next month in NM.

I always feared the day this spot would be broadcast to the world. Oh well, if not here, it would be somewhere else. We've been going here for years and it used to be so quiet and never had to fight for a spot. Now it gets full very quickly. I've noticed that some folks (most likely locals from Dutch John or Manila) will unfortunately park their RV's in some of the best places, permanently for the season which makes it difficult (Look for the guy whose trailer says "Outback" on the nose and you'll see what I mean). In recent years we've had to start looking for other places to camp because this area doesn't offer the tranquility it once did. Dense camping attracts a different kind of camper. As a lifetime resident it has been hard to watch the population explode and it becomes harder and harder to find isolation and "get away." Congrats on being lucky enough to find that spot unoccupied. Going in the fall as you did likely played a role. One year we went, the water level was so high, that entire place was under water. I have to imagine with the 2018-2019 winter, it is high now as well. Beautiful and thorough work on your video.

Do you have any recommendations? Thanks and keep up the good work...
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 4 года назад
So glad that Jug Hollow worked out for you JP! It's one of our favorite areas. What kind of kayak you should look for depends on how you want to use it. We definitely recommend a sit-in, rather than sit-on-top as your center of gravity is down low near the waterline, rather than being well above it. It's also far more comfortable. The longer the kayak, the more accurately it will track and the less effort that is required to paddle it.
