You can heat the aluminum and melt wax in around the pins, which works well with bolts in aluminum

Maddie that red light you never saw before is probably the reverse polarity light. For future reference those plugs usually have color coded screws. Brass color is hot, chrome color is neutral and green is ground. Good job anyway.
@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid 8 месяцев назад
I looked for colour differences, and I saw the green for the ground, but if there was a difference on the 30A end, I couldn't see it. In a 50/50 chance, I got it wrong. :)

Since the receptacle was made for 220V, both screws would be brass colored since both are hot (no neutral). @@TheDigitalMermaid

The idea to connect a COTS industrial electric motor to the existing propshaft directly is probably best. This would be still far better than the diesel engine spending any more time near the boat. And you can resell it when you are ready to switch to the pod motor (if you even want that).
@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid 8 месяцев назад
Absolutely agree. I actually got the new motor now, so a slight spoiler, it's a Golden Motor 10kw BLDC motor. Do I have faith that it's rock solid? Absolutely not. lol. I've got plans though. ;)
@alexpyattaev

@@TheDigitalMermaid Assuming that is enough power, it looks like a great choice! And since it is just 17 kilos... and it is not "marine expensive"... maybe get two? That would bring your practical reliability way higher than any single motor solution ever could. And if you could get a couple of one-way-bearings, you can pair them up to run in parallel. This way you could use them both for extra power if you really desperately need it, and use just one at other times. Though I'm not sure if it would be that straightforward to sync up the drivers so they do not get confused.

Lazy jacks - frighteningly expensive? You can make your own at low cost. 3/16” or 1/4” 12-strand UHMWPE (Dynema), splice in some low-friction rings, a few wire pad-eyes on the boom and mast. You don’t need a lot of expensive blocks. Good winter project, in addition to all your other projects.

I think there's pros and cons to all options, but I am leaning towards simple v-drive belts. Hello, as far as protecting your bow with a metal band/strip. You may want to look at a product called a keel shield. It's a rubber molded stick on type of installation. It's made for exactly what you want to use it for. I believe it's @$150.00 and it's a heavy thicker item. Good luck with your vessel.

good job Madi I'm glad to see the boat is on dry dock. Now comes the fun work of rebuilding. I hope we can get in touch through one way or another so that we can help each other. one more question, why so focused on an electric motor with a dynamo? My vetus eline cannot charge lifepo4 batteries, only lead acid. That's why I use solar energy and later build a dynamo myself that can charge my 48v source while sailing. 😊

@TheDigitalMermaid 8 месяцев назад
We've got a patreon discord that's fairly active now, that's one option. I keep a close eye on comments here, too. :) - As for why I've got the focus on regen; It's because the regen from the prop will be the primary source of recharging the batteries on passages. It may not be much, but it should be constant, and when considering passages lasting weeks, it'll add up. It'll also work day or night, sun or clouds, where solar is more intense but only available for shorter bursts. In higher latitudes, solar is also less useful.

Pod mount motor humm. I Do not see any advantages over shaft drive. Pod motor is basically a sail drive and its under water so servicing means haul out. with shaft drive you can get 200-700 watts regen. The only pod motor that has better regen is the 25kw motor from Ocean Volt which Uma shows. They still have the 15kw which gives them 200-700 watts regen. The new 25kw does up to 5kw from Ocean Volt. Ocean Volt is dedicated to regen and hands down is the best if regen is needed on your boat.
@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid 8 месяцев назад
Main benefits of the pod; No gearing, at all. Failure won't lead to water ingress (particularly relevant after I nearly lost the shaft log last summer), and no need for external cooling, as it's immersive cooled. Also, it totally frees up the engine bay for more batteries. Oh, another benefit is that the prop can be aligned parallel to the water for more efficient thrust (albeit you lose prop walk, which can be helpful). OV is the top of the regen game, but sadly, it's a closed ecosystem, and extremely expensive. So for me, it's just not an option.

Love watching your journey! I’m rooting for you and your insurance sitch! I was just watching a video of a similar conversion and they are doing something that you might want to consider, especially given your concerns on weight distribution. Instead of putting their batteries where the motor/deisel tank was, they’re turning that spare area into a water tank then putting the batteries where the center tanks were. Doing so should put the bulk of your battery weight more midship instead of aft. You mentioned chopping up the tanks in this (or a later?) video, so maybe you go whole hog on that idea and just have fore and aft water tanks, and what are center tanks now become battery banks. Will likely also greatly simplify access and maintenance. And to their point it keeps the water outside and the batteries inside. Definitely a win-win. Video in question, skip to -18 minutes in. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eOzJtrpJ_Q4.htmlsi=7q4Vj-7gON6e_Q-I

This is a fascinating idea, and if I was doing a full gut/rebuild like them, I'd seriously consider it. Getting the weight forward was part of why I debated pulling / resizing the settee tanks, so I could fit a battery under each would be ~400lbs close to the center.

You might consider cannibalizing a wrecked Tesla. The motors they use are more than powerful enough and I know for a fact that there are aftermarket drivers available that would easily work in regen mode. People are using them for EV conversions since Tesla Motors isn't allowing us to interface with their proprietary drive systems. The only hard part would be having a custom mounting bracket made that would handle the torque.
@TheDigitalMermaid

The main problem with that plan is that almost all EVs, and certainly Teslas, have high-voltage DC systems. I know a lot of folks who convert don't worry about insurance, but I am really trying to stay insured, so I am trying to follow the ABYC low-voltage specs as closely as I can. This restricts me to

What you are dying to do asap isn't always the best thing to do asap.. Why getting the diesel out while you still haven't found out the best of right solution for the electric drive, and having to do loads of other things to do is not the best way to go IMHO. You have right now a working propulsion system. Why not concentrate first at everything else: your time, energy and money, to get the boat generally in order. Trust me: the work will take WAAAAAAAAAY longer than you expect and will be more expensive than planned. In this way you will possibly be able to sail next sailing season, keep sailing following seasons if you want so. It is a sailing boat, not a motor boat:: you can test all other systems, standing rigging, running rigging, sails, anchor, interior, navigation systems, you name it. Then when being on a holiday sailing, you have all the time to contemplate the electric propulsion, also backed by your build up experience about motor hours and such. Then, when the boat is generally in order, you can do the big conversion, with the knowledge when done you are ready to make that first awesome trip, knowing that everything else is in shape. There are two possibilities: 1) thank me later 2) I wish I had listened to this advice. Other option is that you recognize you can't control the urge and take the consequences as they come. (they will appear in the shape of bulging cost up front, and perhaps up to three year before you will sail again..... Perhaps I am wrong, also possible...

I totally understand your point, and it applies to most people. For me though, the entire project, from day 1, has revolved around going electric. The idea to pull the motor is that it will let me get on with designing the battery boxes and motor mounts. As it turns out though, insurance said they're going to drop me once I take the diesel out, so for now it stays until I can find new coverage for the repower. In any case, my focus is on the repower, and just enough bottom work to get back in the water. A LOT of tasks will wait until after I'm afloat again. I want to do sea trials and stress testing of the new propulsion so that when I get hauled out next fall, I know what I need to do before going back in for the '25 season, which I hope to be able to move onto full time then and head out.
