Best animations of the points of sail I've come across so far, I will be referring to them in the future as I'm learning. Thank you!

I appreciate your clear concise explanations. Your method of pausing to allow students time to absorb is excellent. Repeating the message reinforces the instruction. Thank you for offering these videos. They are most helpful

I learned to fly and to sail pretty close to the same time period. One of the most important lessons I learned from both is that it is not the air beneath the wings that keeps an aircraft aloft nor the wind behind the sails (except when running, which is the most inefficient tack for sailing). The wing or sail, literally provides lift or propulsion via a Venturi affect of low pressure area over the wing or behind the sail. When you don’t maintain the proper angle of attack you “stall” the wing/sail. The sail begins to luff and you lose efficiency, where as the aircraft loses lift and you are in deep do do. That lesson has kept me alive throughout my Navy flying career. Great lessons though. I’m kind of doing a refresher to get back out on the water. Really like your low key presentation and enthusiasm for the sailing lifestyle.

Good for folks who have to turn a map to their orientation. Confusing for everyone else who is used to seeing the wind stay still and the boat move (and I assume they are also the people who can keep north at the top of a map)
@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine
@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine Месяц назад
Doesn’t have to be confusing. Just stick to whatever perspective works for you. I find this perspective more realistic and practical for real life. The traditional sailing circle works theoretically but is not real life

So, to clarify for my buddy that I always argue with... All points of sail are defined by apparent wind, correct?
@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine
@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine 2 года назад
I would say technically yes but this is one of those eternal arguments that will never end. Once the boat is moving in real life then yes you are sailing to apparent, but when you look at the sailing circle in a book it is more relative to true wind ie. a beam reach has the wind directly on the beam where it would be forward of the beam if it was apparent. In reality most recreational monohulls are too slow for it make that much difference.
@schtoopid
@schtoopid 2 года назад
@@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine 6 kts of boat speed in 10kts of beam would shift that vector significantly, no? Maybe 15-20 degrees..
@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine
@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine 2 года назад
Yes it probably would but as I said typical recreational sailboats. 6 knots of boat speed in 10 knots of wind seems rather optimistic to me. I certainly can’t get those numbers on my boat. O’Day 322 29’6” on the waterline and displacement of 10250 pounds.
@schtoopid

@@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine Yeah, a bit optimistic.. But thats why I sail. Peterson 35.. Its a speedy boat.

Why do you want to be on a starboard tack when running? I don't think that was answered.

What is tack?
@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine
@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine 3 года назад
Tack means one of three things in sailing. One is the forward corner of a sail. Second is to turn the boat with the bow going through the wind, this is done to zigzag upwind and third it is definition used to determine who has to give way when two sailing vessels approach each other. Thanks for the comment. Hope this answers your question.
