As new sailors and proud owners of an Ericsson 38, my husband and I found your videos as the most educational, enlighting and fun to watch, we have enjoyed every single one you have posted in RU-vid (many many times). This one came in perfect timing, we will have our first "long" passage from San Pedro to Catalina Island (only 25 miles) for Thanksgiving, and been practicing to balance our sails (we haven't taken classes - we just go out every weekend and practice what we've learned and observed) Thank you so much for your wisdom!!!
Not once did I think the words, "Can we go sailing yet!?!" I was enjoying the tour of such a wonderful and beautiful boat! A lovely lady sir, happy to find your channel!
Mr Williams, you condensed in 12 min what others take hours. So down to earth, unpretentious, informative and intuitive. It takes a poet's mind to see the meaning of things. And thanks for omitting the ever infuriating music that people feel obligated to torture us with.I have to repeat what Colleen West said so eloquently below:" I wish our country had lots more men like this. You can see the balance and calm in him. Today's "men" and women are a nightmare of anger, politics, division, strong opinion on things they know not what. Just a mess of a generation. Where did we all go so wrong?"
I recently finished listening to Philosophy of Sailing and hearing your voice in the first few seconds of the video made me so happy. Instant subscribe.
Christian very well done. I had my daughters watch it a couple times to give me a little legitimacy and as a review. I do a 140 mile RT sail each summer to the Lake Erie islands over a week or two. My next challenge is CA-Hawaii-CA with a heavily modified Cape Dory 22 June-August 25’ * As a professional pilot you wouldn’t believe the pilots I work with who have no idea where speed “knots” come from.
Thelonious is immaculate! Poetic and informative. I'm so thankful for your posts, Mr. Williams. As I gather more and more miles (out of Marina del Rey) I'll keep my eyes open for you.
When you own a sailboat as nice as Thelonious II, have sailed and survived the 79 Fastnet (let alone crewed the winner), sailed single handed twice to Hawaii and back, made wonderful video documentaries of said voyages, written enchanting and deep books about the pursuit of the meaning of life, know famous people, written famous television shows, you can wear whatever color pants your heart desires...except pink. 😉
Dear Mr Williams, your illustrated stories and recordings are wonderful, inspiring and delicious. One piece of advice: never bear away by first easing the forward sail, ;-) Best regards, a visitor from the country that the word "yacht" comes from (The Netherlands), and I agree, art it is, Jan
Brother, when you narrate as effortlessly and poetically as you do, I would sit on my hands and listen to you like a 9yr old boy for hours, even if you were wearing a tutu. Respect.
You've made a beginner sailer out of me. Thank you for the inspiration. Your books came to me on the right time in life. And gave me... Let's just say.... 'Reason' Greetings from a Dutchman.
Went sailing once! From Annapolis md to saint Mary's college. Did everything on the boat and had the 3rd watch steering .Two days sailing 48 hrs or so. I spent two days in bed unable to move, every muscle in my body frozen and soar I was still glad I went!!!
Sailing an Ericson 32, solo, is thrilling! I have enjoyed sailing my Ericson 32, by myself, more than any other boat I have sailed so far. I have loved watching your sailing videos! You definitely make others happy with your videos. Maybe I’ll sail to Hawaii like you one day. Thank you for doing all the work to document your trip. 🙏
Well done Christian. Informative for most, with just enough glitches for the "nit pickers" to jump on..................which no doubt makes their day (and amuses the rest of us..... at their expense).
even though i haven't sailed one nautical meter in my 58 years on earth.....i just want to tell you how much i thoroughly enjoy your channel and hope you can make many more before you're done. seriously....thanks a lot.
just want to say hi !!!!! my sailboat slip was in marina del rey ,,, now i am in san francisco,,,,,,,,,its frikan freezin all the time here. i miss warm summer days of santa monica.,,,,,,,,,,,there is no frikan summer here,,,,,,,,!!!!!!
Love your channel and videos, best real sailing I've seen on the Internet sir! Please continue to post, you give us older sailors hope that we too may be able to adventure off-shore someday.
Another excellent video, thank you. Some nautical traditions can be traced all the way back to the Bible, one example; Whenever two vessels pass one another each capt shall yell “AYE” to other capt , then each capt shall blow a horn once. Honest , it’s in the Bible. An Aye for an Aye and a Toot for a Toot .
I loved the narration. Although I was watching mostly for learning the ropes (and the terminology) it made me actually laugh out loud many many times. I'm hooked.
I have always had an affection for the sailing terms. Not because they separated me (to make me superior ) to the" landlubbers" who didn't know them. But because they connect me to the sailors who came up with the terms so many hundreds of years ago. I might not be able to relate to them but we speak the same language.
When we tack and jibe it's ready to tack? Lee Ho. Ready to Jibe Jibe Ho. Sometimes it's ready to jibe? Duck! Laser 4000 skiff. Sometimes it all happens a bit quickly. Great video. Luv and Peace.
Thank you, Mr. Williams, for the great videos. I came across your video when first looking at a vegan related video with sailing and I believe yours may have been on the right side suggested, or when I clicked 'RU-vid' (the top of the site), which gives recommendations based on previous views. The pace is good on this one, and I love the descriptions. I sailed a catamaran in the Gulf, a tiny rental, for a few miles. It's something! I like your humility at the end of the video, referring to the formerly exclusive club that lets you fly their flag now. :) Fair winds and following seas.
Beautifully presented. Watching slightly tipsy but not 'out of my gourd'..Ship shape and Bristol fashion is how I always describe anything I wish to be in order, I guess because my late Uncles were all RN and it rubbed off.
Thanks for a very entertaining description of sailing terms and especially for all of the great history of some of those terms. This just became required viewing for all new crew. I'm sure that will drive your views up by at least 2 or 3 this year.....
I am restoring my 38 Ericson and only hope to have it looking as nice as yours WOW and I love referencing your videos for placement. great Video as usual Christian.
Christian: I love The Philosophy of Sailing.I listen to it often. Learned so much. I grew up in Sherman Oaks and Fullerton. Your So. Cal accent (intonation, cadence, tempo, along with your wonderful humor) is something I am very familiar with. You remind me of listening to my best friend’s father as we hiked Catalina, from the isthmus to Avalon. Looking forward to more of your wonderful videos. Have you considered a Vol. 2 of Philosophy? I’d buy it in a heartbeat!
