The decision to build a boat should not be taken lightly. Join me on my DIY Catamaran build. My decision to build a Sailing Catamaran to live on has been one of the biggest decisions in my life, and this foam core boat building channel is the place to see what it takes to build a production quality Catamaran as I work through the steps and the blood , sweat swearing and tears involved.Ross Boardman Jervis Bay Australia.
This week I begin laminating the foam core and shaping the bulkheads for the bow section of the catamaran.

Hello from Oklahoma. SV Seeker was the one that turned me on to your Channel about four or five months ago I've been watching ever since. And it has not been a disappointment at all I look forward to your videos every week. In fact I've never been sailing in my life in fact I've been on a boat very few times but that's all I dream about now. If I was to ever become financially secure I'm hitting the ocean and all parts Unknown.

I'm not sure if this will help you or not but when I used to work with fiberglass we would run around our part/mold with a utility knife just as the glass reached a firm enough point that it could be cut with a blade. If it gets to hard to cut that's it, grinder time, but if you catch it at the right time you can trim the rough off in just a few minutes. Try it in places that wont show if you mess up, but once you learn the feel of the glass... when it cuts best you will really save your self some time and trouble. Give it a try ,it works, just keep a fresh blade in your knife. Great videos ,keep them coming!
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls 5 лет назад
I am a huge fan of the green trim,I was given that advice many ears ago and live by it today.In this case,it is simpler to cut of with the grinder as the shapes are all varied and I am now laminating full sheets rather than patterns,just much simpler to di it that way .When making kayaks I always green trim so important to speed up demoulding.Thanks for the hint,I love this feedback from you guys.Ross

Hi Ross, been following your video's from the start. Great job, always looking out for the new episode. We make food trucks, the fiberglass panels we make, we used to trim them with a router, works great, but if you spin the bit to fast, it burns, both the router bit, and your work peace. The grinder works, but creates a large mess, and a lot of dust, we now use a multi oscillating tool with, a half rounded cutting disk on it, we use the foam as a guide rail to cut it, works great. A lot faster than the router too !

Hey bud. You should look into Arbourtec tuff blade Resharpenable and replaceable grinder blade. Way less dust ideal for hacking those edges off your laminates or after demolding. Also 125 mm saw blade on grinder I have all options on different grinders saves swapping blades Guards are safe too but don’t they limit the tools use. Take care The build is looking good.

I like that you explain your equipment, interesting to anyone who hopes to build a fiberglass project. If I may ask, is that quantity and quality of equipment needed? Would someone with a lot less find it inconvenient , or impossible to do that sort of work?In other words.... What equipment is the most crucial to buy in the beginning?
@lightning9279

Just a thought. Would it have worked to clamp the pattern to the newly made bulk head. Using the pattern as the guide for the router would enable you to cut clean lines to the exact shape. Sweet project!

More great progress. Definitely glass the rat into a bulkhead. It will drive the surveyor crazy. :-) Did you say you were considering laying up whole sheets of foam and then cutting out the pieces you need? Would seem to be less waste, so long as the fiberglass orientation was not critical to the strength. You have to trim it to size with your cutoff wheel anyhow.
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls 5 лет назад
Hey Dave,went on to laminating ccmplete sheets ,and using excess to complete bracing blocking etc,there will not be much waste rest assured.Rossco
@arturasnx7575
@arturasnx7575 5 лет назад
Nice progress. Did you considered vacuum bagging the panels to squeeze excess resin and save some more weight?
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls 5 лет назад
Definately considered it and sadly I simply dont have working time to vac bag,infusion perhaps but not vacuum bagging.I weighed it up and even though I have infusion gear the weight saving is this instance would probably not warrant the extra set up,costs and consumables.I am already taking substantial weight from the original design so a trade off indeed, but these panels are as strong as is needed. Thanks buddy. Ross

My experience with chain lockers is that the chain locker stinks. If you are ever at anchor for more than a week there will be marine life on the chain and cable , some seafloor mud if organic rich and stinks .. I hope your chain locker is easy to clean , with smooth walls and floor made of abrasion resistant tough coating, with hatch and vents that allow a person to enter that muddy stinking hole and live to complain.

@robinbennett5994
@robinbennett5994 5 лет назад
Laminating around the corners is tricky so you don't do it unless you need to. All those edges will be glued to another laminated surface, with more glass and epoxy. They won't stay exposed.

What type of foam and resin?
@SteelDoesMyWill
@SteelDoesMyWill 5 лет назад
I know its way more expensive and time consuming, but it would great if all the structural bulkheads were foam/laminate sandwich. Here is the US, BSB plywood (Marine grade, low void, low defect) is about the same price per sheet as (let's say $80 USD) as certain flavors of Corecell or AirX 70kg/sq M. Of course, that doesn't equate when you have the cost of laminate, resin, and labor to lay them up. But wouldn't it be great to have ZERO wood (except maybe the cabinetry and other pretty stuff)?
@davidbradley3074
@davidbradley3074 5 лет назад
Ross: Why do you roll your glass instead of bagging the whole panels and pulling a vacuum to fully distribute the epoxy?
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls 5 лет назад
Its a matter of speed and the fact that I am using vinylester not epoxy is both well suited to this type of laminating.I will of course pay a weight penalty of approx 10percent perhaps 20 if I infused rather than vac bagged but in the grand scheme of things,speed of layup and excessive consumable costs and materials wastage I would be ahead economically and with way less wasted vacuum supplies,ie bags,resin blankets,hoses,etc.I do have a vacuum infusion system and if i had a crew i would certainly consider it as it keeps employees busy working,watching etc.The wright of this boat has been revonfigured from the original and is set to be about a tonne lighter in any case simply from the changes we have made..

I would have had you drill or poke a hole in the foam every 2 or 3 inches, then insert a piece of woving roving in each hole before laminating each side, your strength would have been tripled, even a piece of Core Mat on each side would increase the strength by 50%..... I don't understand why using a Peel Ply?, I've been a boat builder & repair man here on the Chesapeake Bay for 43 years....I also make Vintage Hot Rod & Cycle parts and molds on the side, I have a few fiberglass videos of the hot rod side of things you can watch on rainy days, you might find a tip or two in there?.... Anyway, anymore vertical pieces you make like this, try this method with Woven Roving though the holes for Triple strength, they will be so strong, you could use them for dump truck ramps if need be! .... Still, I don't understand a Peel Ply when hand laminating? ...... I've been watching you build this craft for sometime now, you're doing a terrific job!

Peel ply instead of sanding later when it goes pass re-laminating window and gets rid of all those sharp needles on the surface
@GasserGlass
@GasserGlass 5 лет назад
@@vettepicking (Fiberglass 101) PEEL PLY is never used in hand lamination (Fiberglass 101) .... Peel Ply is used in vacuum bagging only.... If you don't want little pickers or splinters, you use WAX RESIN, it forms a film when it cures above the fiberglass and incases the pickers! .... however you have to sand the wax resin off in the areas where you will fiberglass to it later..... I've been fiberglassing for a living for a very long time...from Race Car & Vintage Corvette bodys in press molds to full size yachts to vintage drag racing and hot rod parts to custom Harley parts..... Peel Ply in lamination is a waste of time and two extra steps to get the same results using waxed resin, not to mention high cost in wasted materials!

It's great seeing the cross sections getting glassed & going in Ross(: Personally, I'd rather support you directly, rather than contributing to SV Seeker's pockets. There's something about that business that doesn't sit right with me, and I think others notice as well (especially after their plans to get around taxes via 'nonprofit' status). They mute/block/ban youtube comments relating to criticism, just fyi.

To be clear, SV Seeker does not make a dime off of the coins. The coins are $20 to buy, cost $5 to make and Russ gets $15. I'll say that I looked at doing a coin myself and the only thing holding me back is coming up with the art work.

So SV Seeker is doing a nice thing for the other builders, for that alone makes them great people.

I believe you're mistaken. I looked into the cost of making the coins, and I believe it was between $1.50-$3.00 (and I don't think that was for bulk orders). I looked into it in the past, after watching an SV Seeker video that smelled a little fishy to me. I believe the numbers were (at the time) that they were going to bring in ~20% of $60,000-80,000 - and remember, this was excluding any patreon/paypal direct donations, purchases of their merchandise, etc. This was also back when they had advertised them as a 'limited production' run. I posted the numbers, and sources for the information, asking for some clarification of their budget & priorities, and I was blocked from their channel. Please consider that you're seeing a community which is moderated or censored, and there is critical, legitimate, information which is deleted. Watch the Patreon video in which they request further donations, and read the comments (some of the people clearly cannot afford to donate any more). I followed the project back when Kay was around, and it was a person funding their own DIY boat project. I believe that now it is a business, prioritizing making money for personal gain. I think that if you continue to watch their videos with a critical eye you may begin to notice incongruities with the image they project. I do not want to focus on personnel, but you should also listen for slurred speech. I believe that if you follow along with a critical eye, you begin to notice that the atmosphere is more focused on continually bringing in money (for what? what are the costs? it is a retiree who budgeted for this project), much like the generic 'makers' who focus not on pragmatism, but marketing. If someone is going to run a profitable business on youtube, I believe they should project it as such, and not prey on the members of their community who are being misled into thinking that they're supporting someone worse-off than themselves.

@@honeyforce996 So yeah, your calling Doug and his crew liars and can't quite figure out why you have been muted... I too have been watching Doug and SV seeker since Kay was around. My daughter and I have gone to Tulsa OK and met Doug and Bart, we helped on SV Seeker for the weekend. So while I have met Dough personally, have spoken with him OFF CAMERA, have dined with him and I am in no concept of the word gullible nor naive, saying that you are miss judging him and his project from your arm chair and judge what you yourself are unwilling to do, you choose to look for fault and judge that which you know nothing about. Should you find yourself around my channel and start posting such clap trap I assure you, you will be muted there as well if not already.

Is there a particular reason you're using vinylester over epoxy? Other than dosh, I've been hearing epoxy is more expensive than vinylester.

Epoxy 1/3 more expensive,has to be faired painted whuch can add up to $100 000 in fairing and painting.Vinyl is compatible with gel coat and is actually a modified epoxy with a similar chemical backbone and is equally as effective in minimising osmosis and is UV stable unlike epoxy that is not.Vinylester is also much faster and easier to work with and far less temp and humidity reliant than epoxy.I use tonnes of epoxy for adhesion and in my profession but for this cat vinyl is far more suitable. Hi Ross, Eric B´s idea with a Paypal Acc would help sending some real coins - I bought 2 t-shirts from Mats Sail Life and the german customs got wild on me (all in all I have paid nearly double the price of the shirts, had to mail and email with our customs and DHL and still do not have the shirts in my hands). Stay healthy and well.

It is a dilemma as the freight and customs varies so much worldwide.I always buy the guys shirts as it does progress their projects even though it adds up costwise.All the best Ross
