This is the first video of how to build a garden pond in my 'Backyard Garden Pond' series and I am planning to build entire fish pond from treated pine timber. I have used 2x4 or 90x45mm wood to build a frame for the backyard pond which covers all the 4 sides. For the base of the fish pond, I have used 200x50mm treated pine sleepers. To make the fish pond more appealing and add beauty to backyard I have decided to add a glass viewing window to the pond. Glass window will be facing the house so fish in the pond can be seen from the inside of the house.
At this stage I haven't decided if I will be turning it into a goldfish pond or add some native Australian pond fish. However, your suggestion in the comment section will help me in making this tough decision. Garden pond will be followed by some modern landscape of the backyard with some water fall, decking, plants etc., Detailed and step by step article on how to build a garden pond can be found on my blog www.fishaholic.... If you are interested in do it yourself projects then this series might be for you.
Even though I have tried to keep this built cheap, it still cost me quite a lot as sourcing timber these days is not cheap and the screws are expensive too. Melbourne weather is very unpredictable and most of the time it wasn't in my favor. This is not the best garden pond in the backyard but I have put in quite a lot of hours and energy into building this pond. I really hope you will enjoy this video and might inspire some of you to build your own above ground fish pond.

Apologies, Christopher. I am not sure about the Max dims. If I had more space, then I would have gone 3m x 2m pond with front to back bracing at the top centre.

This was a brilliant video mate! Very detailed and easy to follow. I'll be doing my pond exactly the same apart from I want a bottom drain on mine so I will not be boarding the bottom. What glass did you use if you don't mind me asking.. Thanks 😊

@Fishaholic

Hi mate, it is too strong for sure. I wanted to build a pond that can stand for years to come. The glue I have used is the cheapest available at bunnings. I have used it in the past and it is extremely strong. You shouldn't have any issue if you decide not to use any glue.

Hi. I am in the UK and want to have this built (I am not good at carpentry). I am wondering about the glass thickness. I want to build the frame 6.5ft but 1.5ft of that will house a pump, so the pond area will be 5ft long, 4ft high and 3ft wide. the glass i was thinking 4ft x 3ft. How thick do I need the glass please.
@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic 2 года назад
Hi Lynda, My Pond is slightly bigger than yours but the height is almost the same. I have used a 140cm x 60cm - 25mm 'thickness' toughen laminated glass. Pond has been up for a year now without any issues. I am not a carpenter and have only basic skills that I learnt from watching videos on RU-vid. As long as you have some help, you should be okay. This project will be expensive though due to cost of timber, liner and glass
@lyndahines7554
@lyndahines7554 2 года назад
@@Fishaholic I am going to use recylcled timber to get the cost down. Thank you for your advice. I love your pond. Ive started with a half barrel pond and instantly wanted a bigger one. lol. then I saw your video and that was it. It was doable. Thanks again.

Although I'm a fan of if it's worth doing it's worth over doing fishaholics 25mm toughened laminated glass is overkill for something that size. I'm not knocking it if it's available and you can afford it the thicker the better but realistically 25mm glass is going to be literally bullet proof and therefore very expensive. I've been out of the glass industry about 17 years but my recommendation would be 7.3mm toughened laminate. It's made up of a 5mm piece of toughened glass a 0.3mm plastic and then a 2mm piece of normal glass. You want to mount it with the 5mm piece on the inside. Even 7.3mm laminate isn't cheap but it's far more readily available and sensibly priced and should be strong enough to hold what you want it to 😊
@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic Год назад
I completely agree with you, Ricky. Pond Glass was $ 784, which was expensive back then and will be more expensive now due to inflation.
