After wasting days looking for a solution to a similar problem, sections in a dissertation that require "2 list styles," I found this video. The only thing useful enough to get it done. Thank you Jason
Hi Jason, another great video. One question, is there scope to make a video on how to fix an inherited document? Many times I've been given a Word doc which has been through many hands and the numbering throughout (maybe 50+ pages) is broken at certain points. Numbering restarts randomly etc. How to fix these issues would be a great video.
Hi Sin. This is a common question. Set up your number definitions and make sure you link each level to a style. Then start at the top of your document and work through it methodically, applying the styles where appropriate. With inherited documents there is often a lot of hidden bookmarks and other clutter (where previous contributors have tried to fix the numbering) that prevents a paragraph or heading from re-numbering correctly. In these instances, right-click the number and choose "Restart from 1" or "Continue numbering" as necessary. This is a necessary one-off step to straighten things out. It might sound like a lot of work, but with only 50 pages you'll be done in an hour or two, and when you are done, your document numbering will be correct, and any future changes where content is added or removed, the numbering will adapt correctly. Good luck, Jason
@@JasonMorrell Yes, it is incredibly common. Especially with legal documents which have been messed about with by different people. It's incredibly frustrating.
