In this episode, I visit the rather unassuming St. Mary's Church in the village of Baconsthorpe to uncover a Norfolk rarity- a set of Victorian tubular tower bells.
Join me as I discover how they work as well as play a few tunes!

Excellent Chris. Maybe Hindringham should go down this route if they’re worried about the weight.

Interesting chiming bell sounds a bit strange

It sounds cracked

The hammer is just being dropped on which then makes it sound cracked. Normally when a chiming bell is struck the hammer is dropped but then rests on a steel spring to prevent it resting against the bell. Also the striking point on the bell looks heavily worn so that could also be part of the problem.

Personally I think the tube walls are a shade too thick, I once made a massive Eb for the great gate of Kiev out of a scaffolding tube it was suspended horizontal by 2 trestle stands and struck with a heavy nylon hammer......God it was a glorious sound.....made a low D for danse macabre and night on bare mountain. I've examined a set in Newcastle Emlyn in Wales by Harrington. The hammer mechanics is a bit over complicated and the tubes in my opinion are too thick messing up the harmonic ratios

These ones are Harrington. Good old Victorian technology.

I just love the music you use at 6:00 did you make it?

I always make my own music. It makes it harder work for me to make videos, but protects me from copyright and distribution issues in the long run. 🙂
