It takes a lot of gumption to PURCHASE a classic house that needs a lot of work. And then it takes that much more, a big ol’ added layer to PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE on a platform like RU-vid where you’re subject to all kinds of disappoints like low views and scrutiny, be it understandable but not delivered very nicely or worse yet, outright unwarranted and mean spirited. So. I’m happy to engage in your videos. And I love the variety. Can’t wait to see that warehouse constructed in the same spot the old one was. Lot of things to look forward to. I’d say my favorite content is the history videos. Loved it when you explored places locally and semi-locally. But I also love the gardening, cooking (the more plants and recipes I know about the better my livelihood gets) and removing old paint and refinishing old woodwork. So satisfying to see and I learn a lot about different types of wood finishes and their effects. I’ve done polyurethane and shellac and I want to experiment with varnish next. Though, Jeannie’s costume-making is also out of this world amazing. I’m slowly getting into vintage costume recreation and tailoring my own clothes.
If you need more ideas for videos we would love to see Jeanie do more cooking and canning videos. Also love when you do your historic places in the area tours.
I’m sure it feels good to have the dead trees taken down. I’m an exception to the rule that kids are picky eaters. As an adult I am much more choosy. I would eat anything my Mother cooked including liver & onions, really stinky cheese and of course, sauerkraut! I wish I liked it as it is a powerhouse for one’s digestive system. The relaxing music in congruent with the work along with the sound of the chain saw was relaxing to me. I've listened to chainsaws a lot in my childhood but it was never as relaxing as watching the both of you work. I finally moved into my newly constructed home. Not nearly at all as ornate as the beautiful home you have. But I'm happy. Have you made any more taco soup? I'd love to see it again.
I grew up on sauerkraut with carroway seeds, and I it prefer it that way, but plain is also good. I understand the longer you let it ferment the softer the cabbage gets. There is another vegetable that I've recently discovered and that is pickled red onions. I don't like raw onions unless they are the sweet variety (valdelia), but the pickled red onions are really good. The recipe isn't as simple as sauerkraut as it calls for vinegar, water, salt and sugar. Perhaps that's why I like them, they have sugar! 😉. Its good you removed those dead trees. Funny how the first tree was hollow. Now you know where the first squirrel family started that eventually invaded your attic. 😊😅
Have you ever tried the Walla Walla onion? They are grown in Washington state and are so mild that you can eat them like an apple. We're going to try the Caroway seeds next time!

Yard is looking good. Tree trimming always makes me nervous. But you got it done. I've never seen a cicada. I have heard the noise before. I think they have something similar in northern Ca. Can't recall what they are called there. Starting the ground work for the hvac is needed anyway. It'll get there. I comment almost every episode. Spring yard cleanup is very satisfying, seeing the cicadas is nostalgic for me since I moved west. I have also enjoyed your outing videos. I would love to see what your local neighborhood and town are like - do you have a favorite garden center or hardware store where you get your supplies? Or a trip to the lumber yard! Bring us along! We managed to save one walnut log but the rest was rotten. I'm going to let it age for a year and then mill it to see what we get. You want to see our sawmill? We can make that happen!
Enjoyed this episode, in spite of never liking to see trees cut down. & yes i have had that done for many trees over the last 40 years!!! I do think you got the cicada molting backwards, but not being an insect expert, am not certain it holds for all cicadas. My experience is that they molt shortly after they come out of the ground, and they dont have their wings until after they molt. Keep up the variety of your content & continue to spotlight the gorgeous flowers in your planting boxes. Love those irises in a color I've never seen before!

I watch the ads just for that reason, it’s the least I can do, since I’m already here. ❤ That kraut IS crunchy. I love Jewish rye bread with whole caraway seeds, yummy. Kombucha is supposed to be easy to make and good for gut health. Might be worth trying. I hear that this is the year that 2 different kinds of cicadas are due to come out. If that’s true it’s going to get noisy. Wow, Presidential election year, 2 kinds of Cicadas AND a full solar eclipse over the USA ! ? Should I be worried, creeped out or buying lottery tickets ?

A little scary seeing you cutting down that big tree, but glad it turned out to be hollow and not quite as hard a job. But you still got a lot done! Great work! So sorry that the finances are keeping you from doing as good of a HVAC system as would be best. My heart breaks for you for that, as I still identify with what I’d be doing had we bought that house as we had hoped. At least as you install what you can, you can build it so that you can add on or improve it as time goes by. About the sauerkraut experiment - well I hate sauerkraut so what can I say? LOL! I can’t eat anything vinegary. Can’t stand the taste and my system can’t handle the acid. I had to laugh out loud about what you said it does to your system because cabbage gives me a ton of gas!! LOL! I do like to fry shredded cabbage in butter and add cooked noodles to it, and yes caraway seeds are an excellent and flavorful addition to that! Thinking you could take small portions of your current batch of sauerkraut to experiment with "flavors". I personally like caraway seeds, but not too many, especially if they are fresh, as it will overwhelm, be bitter. Also, a touch of dill works or some chopped fennel fronds. This is a very fun video, love to see cleanup and love the tractor. My mom's German heritage made sauerkraut an annual canning event. One year a batch went bad and my Dad and I had to bury it. It was a while before I could eat it and my Dad never did again.

17 year cicadas. They are very loud and they never stop! They will lay eggs in your tree branches. Eventually they hatch, go into the ground for another 17 years. Been through it in VA 17 years ago.
Mike and Ginny, did you have to spray the cut wood with bugs spray? Were they termites or ants? I really miss your videos on restoring that old house because I learn so much from your knowledge on old-fashioned restoring products.
We hauled the old wood out to the street for pickup. I think the ants and termites would stay in the wood and keep eating so I wasn't worried. We are planning to get back to some restoration projects soon. Thanks for stopping by!
I just use cabbage and salt I use cabbage leaves and a weight on top to keep the kraut submerged. You can use an up side down plate for a weight in a jar that size.
For your next tree cutting session: start by cutting halfway through in the tree on the surface you want to fall down first (ie. If you want your tree to fall in the North direction, start your first horizontal cut on the north side of the trunk) and go half way only. After the half horizontal cut, make another cut above the first one but in diagonal, to form a cutoff wedge that you will then remove carefully. Then cut horizontally the trunk from the opposite direction (behind) to meet the empty wedge. The tree will then tend to fold over the wedge which prevent the chainsaw blade from being stuck, and will control the direction of the fall when the trunk fold over at the wedge.
On the channel Celebrating Appalachian.they are in North Carolina mountains. They make cabbage, sauerkraut, and this kraut with a Asian take by adding in other veggies and seasonings. Give it a watch. I think you would like their recipes and ease of the whole process.

Hard and nearly constant work but your property and home are amazing. Besides the fledgling yew, are you planting any other trees to replace the cut trees? Can those baby magnolias be replanted anywhere else on the property or perhaps sold? Just the mama tree alone makes the property but to have a forest of them!! Maybe merch some stationary or mugs w photos of the blooms or trees or variations...a calendar of the house n property across the yr? Am jealous of the flowers. Are you going to have vege/herb garden? ( like you need anymore work) About the cicadas- yeah, no. We have them up here in MA. They creep me out. About the sauerkraut: it is a super healthy food. I love it but beyond plain or w caraway seeds, I am not a fan. I have tried other flavors n am no fan of them. Am not a fan of the smell of cabbage, kraut, or brocoli but they are natural remedies for the things we don't realize ail us. So happy to see your posts again!
Hello Maria! We aren't planting any new trees at this time. The place was badly overgrown when we bought it and it's starting to become more useful. Someday we hope to build a workshop out back. We're not ready for a full fledged garden, but we might be able to grow a few things. We were up in Boston a few years ago on business. We always meant to go back and tour Boston Harbor.
You have to try sauerkraut with curry powder. We eat a lot of sauerkraut in the Netherlands and I love the ones with curry. Would love to see more home cooking from you besides the renovations
