Mal- does indeed usually indicate something negative in most European languages (as in malformed or malfunction or maladaptive and so on), but in Esperanto it just indicates a meaning opposite to the meaning of the root word. For example, maldekstra is the opposite of dekstra, but maldekstra isn't negative (and dekstra isn't positive). Malferma is the opposite of ferma, but neither is positive or negative. Yes, one can say that malbona and malbela are negative, but that is only by coincidence; bona and bela have a sort of positive meaning, so their opposites are negative, but that is coming from the root words, not from the mal- prefix.
