After a great sailing season in the Caribbean, s/v Cloudy bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) leaves Antigua and heads off to east coast USA, out of the hurricane zone. The passage Antigua to Florida (St.Augustine) took us 12 days, with an overnight stop in BVIs and a 2 days stop in Bimini, Bahamas. Great sailing, great weather and lots of fun. 26 May-8 Jun 2018

Beautiful sailing. Thank you for not adding songs and all the junk most other channels are doing. I swear it seems all they film is shoving food in their faces at restaurants and standing on their boats trying to look like models and rich people. Got rather sickening long while ago. So happy to have clicked on your channel. Good health and good sailing.

John, it was a nice way to go in that we avoided Atlantic swell. The seas were so calm, and blue. Other option was to sail Bermuda then West, but we will be doing that (in reverse) in November. And, we wanted to see the US coast south of Chesapeake. The only way to do that is sailing North. South bound is all uphill ( both wind and gulf stream ). Good luck on your trip. If you are low enough, you can of course do the inland waterways. We were too tall sadly.

Not only are you a sailor but a pilot (of a drone, at least)! Truly beautiful video and lovely views. All of your sailing was “champagne sailing”, so you are either lucky, good or left out the choppier bits. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Eagerly awaiting the next chapter.

@SailCloudyBay 5 лет назад
We looked closely at the Moody 54DS too. Very interesting layout. Loads of space and stowage, and that Saloon really is a deck saloon with great views and access just like a modern cat catamaran. But we bought HR as we think it will be tougher for Oceans where we will voyage alone ( not in rally ) plus Glen has always fantasies about owning an HR. If we were only cruising in Med or Caribbean, the DS54 would have been right up there for choice.

Hi there. Thanks for the comment. We didnt want blood and guts on the video as we diced up the Mahi Mahi ... but to explain, we gutted it, chopped off head and tail then the remaining body was cut in half to provide to very big meals. What you saw on the BBQ was one of those halves. Some people just fillet, but we dont want to lose any of that meat that gets thrown with the bones.

Rick, good idea on the bloopers! Unfortunately one of the joys of completing a video is deleting all the raw files and clearing the hard disk .... so bloopers go with that. Actually we don’t have many to be honest. If we have funny ones we would likely include in actual video anyway :)

Glen: I was wondering if you were using a preventer in this video. If not, was there a reason not to do so. Cheers, great video
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 3 года назад
Donald, in general we always have a preventer whenever the wind is aft of the beam. This video passage is so long ago now I really cant remember that particular time. Certainly no reason for us not to have had it). Since that time, we've had a couple of scary wind shifts that have forced a surprise gybe and preventer has saved the day, so the practice is really enforced on us now. Our preventer goes from end of boom to the forecleats. I also plan to get a boom brake, so the force of any accidental (or normal) gybe is suppressed.

Hi Scott, Yes, we did when crossing the Atlantic. We didn't have a good downwind kite then, plus the squalls just kept coming, so dual head sail was safer. Take a look at the video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7tBPNAOdEKE.html

I keep wondering why people, mostly Brits and Aussies, pronounce Genoa, ja noah. It's named after the place and that place is pronounced Jen oh ah and as such, should not the sail also be pronounced that way? You pronounce all the other sail names correctly, why does this one get special treatment? Just curious.

But Americans made it universally acceptable. And then Australians strangled it about the same time that the South African were giving it a second helping of German. So while you're argument that your ancestors started the language has some merit, the actual truth is that it was invented by a combination of cultures who were not technically English. Also, that argument might hold more water if I didn't know that the BBC actually pronounces the place name for Genoa correctly (even though they've gone completely out of their way to mispronounce Barack Obama for the last 10 year (berrick Ahb amah).) I suppose what I'm saying is, the sail is a Genoa (Jen oh ah). Not a Genoa (ja noah). So now that you know the correct way to say it, if you continue to say it incorrectly, you're doing it out of spite. And the language gods have no love for the spiteful. :)

The American's didn't make it "universally acceptable". Genoa was in wide use in the Royal Navy which until the second world war was the pre-eminent navy in the world - eclipsing even the US Navy - certainly all throughout the sailing ship histories. The English were around South Africa nearly 200 years before the Americans even existed... and btw, it wasn't the Germans who gave them a second helping, it was the Dutch. My ancestors were Scottish and only picked up English in the late 1700's.. and as a Canadian, I have a bit of old English as well as "American" spellings and pronunciations Eh! The American English changed with Webster's dictionary in the early 1800's when Noah Webster decided to "simplify" it getting rid of traditional spellings for words like centre, honour, and metre for center, honor and meter. Americans call junior officers "Lew Tennants" instead of the original Lef Tennant" even though the spelling didn't change (Lieutenant). There are literally 500 years of history behind that one. You might also want to talk to the Italians about how to properly pronounce Genoa... :-). There are nearly a billion English speaking people in the world... and a big part of the charm is the different pronunciations (and even spellings) of different words. I think the world would be a much less interesting place if we all talked like people from the Bronx, even if it is pretty colourful.

I'm not interested in how the Italians pronounce the English form of a place name. In fact, I'm not much interested in this conversation anymore. I'm pretty sure you know what I mean and you're being purposefully obtuse because you want to argue about stuff. The difference between the dutch and the Germans matters mostly to the dutch and almost not at all to the Germans and completely not at all to me. My Scottish, English, German and middle European lineage doesn't care in the least. A Genoa sail is pronounced Jen oh ah. You know it. I know it. Everybody knows it.

I don't give a shit about how YOU pronounce something... but I do give a shit when you insist that the rest of us pronounce it YOUR way... You are the one being obtuse. Typical ugly American response.

Not quite sure what to make of your comment Andre. Whether I should read it as abusive or not. It certainly doesn't read nicely :(

Glen, @4:20 you mention that the Vang is failing and leaking again. On some booms I see that they use lines with shackles as a vang and tighten or loosen the line as needed. Would that work better than a hydraulic Vang??

This rig is too big for a simple rope and block type vang. Plus this vang also hold UP the boom as well as pulling it down
