I've been busy for a while so I am catching up now, and first, with regards to a safety harness, it sounds fine to those who have never worked with one, but if you are out there on your own, and after a fall, you end up hanging in the harness unable to reach a place to stand up again, the question is what stops you from damaging your diaphragm or slowly deflating your lungs, depending on the harness you use. Harnesses are fine, but if you are going to use them, then like everything else in this life, they need a back up plan. Next, working on sloping roofs, rafters or sheathing, with a steep pitch such as yours has, is easier if you have temporary steps to stand up on that are easy to fix and remove. Strip of wood that are one inch x inch and a half x a length that covers say two rafters, with 3 inch nails part way driven in can give a good solid step, and if you use a claw hammer and just three nails, this step is easy to remove and place elsewhere. You can use as many of these steps as you feel comfortable with to get you up and across the roof, and you will always be able to put one or both knees on the roof/rafter for balance when you are handling loads, so strap on kneeler pads are also a good idea. Great to see you again Trustin, and amazing to enjoy a few minutes of Catlin and Precious, so take care.

Looks great. Just a tip: When using your framing square, put the inside of the long leg on the edge of your board, then mark at the inside of the short leg.
@johnsadler8637
@johnsadler8637 2 года назад
This is how my grandfather taught me - when the outside short edge is raised up because of the angle the long leg has, the pencil can tilt out or in. If the lead is centered on the mark next to the inside, that’s always against the surface and therefore more true to the measurement.
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
at 3:26 I use the long inside edge but the outside of the short. Curious what's the benefit of using the inside? I haven't done much work with a square but plan to do a lot more.
@jackpoirier5023
@jackpoirier5023 2 года назад
@@TrustinTimber the outside edge will be up off the board surface. When striking a line in that manner, your pencil can move toward and away from your mark giving a wavy line. It’s more accurate to use the inside, which is on the boards surface. My Pepére taught me that 50 years ago. Cabin looks sweet! You’re doing a marvelous job. Stay safe. I enjoy what you are building. Beautiful baby too. Congrats on building the family too.

Hey brother, you should have a harness on, and safety tether, especially if you are uncomfortable with heights. Before I became a power plant operator, I did line work for 22+ years, as a line clearance tree surgeon, and occasional hot apprentice lineman (because I went through that apprenticeship), with 25,000+ hours of time at great heights, and I would have had my saddle on and been tied into something substantial...even with not being afraid of heights. You have to be around for that beautiful family of yours, brother, so always: safety first! Btw: nice job! Thank you for sharing! God bless you and yours, brother!

Thats a pretty sturdy roof deck. Around here you're lucky if you have 3/8 osb. Looks like you have a solid 1 1/4 of roof deck. Also you're extension ladder is backwards. Not sure if you were using it like that on purpose but they are pretty uncomfortable to walk up when backwards because the rungs are angled.
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
Yeah, about 1”1/2 of roof deck. I’m not insulting anytime soon so wanted it thick. Thanks for the ladder tip. I have next to nine ladder experience. This was an old ladder I found and I orientated in the way it felt stronger but good to know. I’ll look at that next time.

You sure made it hard to do that job. Any reason why you didn't start at the bottom and work up, as that would always provide you with a stable place to work from. You can still use those wider or more narrow boards as long as they are the same width for a row.
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
Yeah, I started at the top becuase I felt it was easier to stand on the platform for most of the job and a little safer. Less chance of sliding off the roof. It's a steep pitch. Yeah, I could have made use of the other boards but I ended up having enough of the 8" 1/4 boards. I got extra for the stairs and shelving.

I don't plan to insulate anytime soon. But when I do, I'll insulate from the top. I got some advice from an architect on how to do it. Anouther cabin buider on RU-vid did it. The Outsider. Seems like a good approach for simple roofs like these.

First floor foot print appears small and the upstairs seems almost useless with roof slope. I see three people right now but things sometimes happen and the family expands. Just asking because if full time home I need to stop watching now. Tie yourself to a safety line. It only takes one slip. Good luck.
