After a couple of delays I finally got around to stripping and rebuilding the front knuckles. Found some very damaged bearings along the way. Full clean up and paint of all the components on the front axle, and all torque setting and shims are measured for the build to get the steering setup correctly.
This rebuild covers 40,60,70,80 series Toyotas will be that same as most solid axle 4X4's
A Big thanks to all you guys who have supported me on my journey of sharing my 40 series build on RU-vid.
All my tools and consumables are brought from ToolKing.

Great job - very well done. One point, when setting bearing preload, you can hold off on putting the cone washers in till you get it where you want it, then put the cones in and assemble properly. This way if you need to add/subtract shims from top and bottom, you don't have to screw around with the cones. Be sure to double check preload once the cones are in.

Great video, but I'm wondering about the knuckle preload. The workshop manual for my BJ46 recommends 1,8-3,8 kg. Not 3-6 kg as mentioned in the video. That is far too much in my opinion. Another observation is that the the gasket next to the dust cover is on the outside of the cover, not on the inside between the dust shield and the knuckle spindle.

Really like the video. Just had a quick question with setting the preload on the knuckle. If it's either too tight or too loose and you have to remove or add shims, do you find that it is always best to do it on the bottom? Or should you try to do it at the top as well?

Vid only shows you removing shims from the bottom - should remove equal top and bottom to keep the axle centred?
@boxmat182ify

I was thinking the same thing. I'm about to attempt this and I'm gonna get the little scale. But I would have thought remove them equally from top and bottom.
@scod3908
@scod3908 4 года назад
boxmat182ify, make sure you get a mechanical scale and not a digital one.
@boxmat182ify
@boxmat182ify 4 года назад
Yeah I can do that, how come though?? What's your reasoning?? Thanks!
@scod3908
@scod3908 4 года назад
boxmat182ify, a mechanical one is easy to read when the measurement isn’t constant. The digital ones jump around a bit due to the averaging etc. Think of standing on a mechanical scale vs an electronic one - mechanical is instant but electronic takes a second or two to show the value.

Complete novice here! How come you knew to remove the bottom shims and not the top shims?
@40ChannelCruiser
@40ChannelCruiser 2 года назад
Hi Will, there is a OEM tool that you can use to find the center and can adjust the shims to suit. But if you don't own the tool I set it up so there is about the same shim thickness top and bottom, so in this case there was more on the bottom which is why I removed them. Hope this makes sense.
