#40 Kanjizai-ji
This is first temple in Ehime when you go around clockwise (from #1 in order.)
Kanjizai-ji Temple was opened in 807 as a place of imperial prayer for the 51st Emperor Heijo, and was considered one of the shrines in Japan at the time.
Kobo Daishi, who founded the temple, carved three statues from a single sacred tree: the principal image of Yakushi Nyorai, the side Buddha of Amida Nyorai, and Eleven-faced Kanzeon Bodhisattva. .
Among them, Emperor Heijo and Emperor Saga visited the temple in close friendship, had their goshuin stamps stamped on them, and stored the Issai Sutra and the Great Prajnamaya Sutra, so the surrounding area came to be called ``Gosho'' and the area where the temple was located ``Heijo.''
In 1638, Imperial Prince Kushoho of Kyoto made a pilgrimage to the temple, which received the name Yakushi-in, and became the imperial shrine of Date Munetoshi, the lord of the Uwajima domain.
It is called the ``back checkpoint of the Shikoku Sacred Sites'' because it is the farthest place from the No. 1 Reisho Temple of the Shikoku Sacred Sites.
In addition, there is the Hoshuden Octagonal Hall, which houses and displays treasures passed down in the temple, a statue of Kanjizai Bodhisattva whose eyes were opened in 1998, and a statue built by Tenno Okamura, a pioneer in the local haiku world. There are also monuments with poems by Basho.
●Point to watch around.
Main Hall: It was completely destroyed by an unexpected fire in 1960, but was restored in 1960.
The main image of Yakushi Nyorai, the eleven-faced Kanzeon Bodhisattva, and Amida Nyorai are enshrined in the main hall, and in front of the main hall is a sign that says, ``Please accept the treasure seal made by Kobo Daishi himself.'' is erected.
Daishido: Built in 1866.
In addition to enshrining a statue of Kobo Daishi, Fudo and Aizen Myoo in the side samurai, the corridor is filled with sand from 88 locations in Shikoku.
Sanmon gate made entirely of zelkova: The Sanmon gate, built approximately 200 years ago and made entirely of zelkova, is designated as a cultural property of Gosho Town.
The compass on the ceiling is especially famous. The statue of Nio was made by a carpenter from the Shimoku family, and the current plaque was painted by the 401st head of the temple, Koyasan.
The zodiac guardian deity was carved in 1976 at the request of Shikoku sacred site pilgrims, who sprinkle water on it to pray for the fulfillment of their wishes.
Shingyo Houtou: It is said that Daishi prayed for the recovery of ordinary people from their illnesses.
Others: Hoshuden, Octagonal Hall, Kanjizai Bodhisattva statue and Basho's haiku monument.

大同2年（807）、この観自在寺は51代平城天皇の勅願所として開かれ、当時日本にあった鎮守の1つにも数えられていたれた。
開基した弘法大師は本尊の薬師如来と脇仏の阿弥陀如来、十一面観世音菩薩の3体の尊像を一本の霊木から刻んだ。。
なかでも平城天皇、嵯峨天皇は親しく行幸され、御朱印を下ろし、一切経と大般若経を収められたため周辺は「御荘」と、寺のある地は「平城」と呼ばれるようになった。
寛永15年（1638）には、京都の空性法（くうしょほう）親王が巡拝され、薬師院の号を受け、宇和島藩主伊達宗利の勅願所となった。
四国霊場の第一番礼所霊山寺より一番遠い場所にあることから、「四国霊場の裏関所」と呼ばれている。
このほか、寺に伝わる宝物を収納展示した宝聚殿（ほうしゅうでん）八角堂、平成10年に開眼した観自在菩薩像、地元俳句界の草分け的存在である岡村呉天翁が建立した芭蕉の句碑などもある。
●見どころ
本堂：昭和34年不慮の火災により全焼したが、昭和39年に復旧された。
入り母屋造りの建物には、本尊薬師如来、脇仏十一面観世音菩薩、阿弥陀如来が奉安されており、この本堂前には「弘法大師御自作の御宝印守を是非お受けください」という立て札が立てられている。
大師堂：慶応2年（1866）に建てられた。
弘法大師尊像、脇侍（わきじ）に不動、愛染（あいぜん）明王をまつっているほか、回廊には四国八十八ヶ所のお砂を敷き詰めてある。
総欅造の山門：今から約200年前に建立された総欅造の山門は、御荘町の文化財にも指定されている。
天井の方位盤は特に有名である。仁王像は下久家の大工の作、現在の額は高野山401世座主の筆によるものである。
八体仏十二支守り本尊：昭和53年に四国霊場巡拝者の希望により十二支守り本尊が彫刻されたものでお水をかけて、願いの成就を祈願する。
心経宝塔（しんぎょうほうとう）：大師が平常点んおうの病気平癒を願い、祈祷をしたという
その他：宝聚殿（ほうしゅうでん）、八角堂、観自在菩薩像や芭蕉の句碑がある
