In this video, we continue our talk with Jeff the forester as he explains the steps involved in timbering. He has some great insight on the relationship between the property owner, forester, and timbering company. this one is a bit long, but well worth the time.

Wow. A TON of good info. The more I learn, the more ignorant I realize I am. I can live with that. Thanks.

singleman I really like having an expert on the homestead. Definitely raises the bar on the quality of info coming from this channel!

+RTH--H ....Absolutely agree. He who is his own Dr. has a sick fool for a patient. I know a lot about a few things, and a little about many things. The hardest lesson I ever learned was to realize there's GOOD reasons WHY I need to hire 'Pros'. And THEN doing it! Case in point....Those thousands of ft PVC we discussed earlier. I dug the first 300 ft of trench myself. Took days of my valuable time. The next 300 was dug by hired labor while I concentrated on making money. The rest of it was laid by a company with a trencher. The cost per ft by the pros was pennies on the dollar compared to the previous years.....Sigh. Ignorance/ being stubborn is expensive.

I will certainly need to hire a Forrester to help with the sale of timber on our 38 acres in North Tennessee. Thanks for all the good advice on these videos.

Red Tool House - Homestead My pleasure. You guys are living the life. Someday I hope to do something similar. As an Arborist this video was very informative from the Forester point of view. And I'm sure it answered a ton of questions for anyone that has thought about harvesting timber from their land.

Thank you, RTH. I have only been reading this vlog for the last month or so, but it has become one of my favorites. You put out such great information, and show how to run a homestead a little bit more like a business. I will definitely keep all this information in mind when we move out of the suburbs. Thanks again.

I think we just came upon the original meaning of the term "above board", like the top wood of the tree is above the board foot wood, and you have an honest understanding of what is going on and who benefits from the whole transaction and how. Good insight.

Cheers to the guest for overcoming some obvious camera shyness. I wouldn't be half as composed if you were trying to interview me on camera. There would be more "uh"s and "um"s than proper words lol. I can explain things quite fluently and confidently in text, but in person, my shit just falls apart for some reason, especially in the presence of lots of people or a camera.

Hey, Merry Christmas!!! I love your channel! I was wondering about one slightly off topic. Do you cull jerky comments? I am a Libertarian, believing that the best solution to speech (of any kind) you don't like is more speech, not less. And that's what I really love about RU-vid: it is generally VERY tolerant of all speech unlike most other blogs who can't seem to be able to tell the difference between strong, forceful, truthful speech and hate speech and delete so much that you can't even carry on a productive conversation! It's ridiculous! Some blog hosts are so controlling, narrow minded, politically correct and just plain vindictive, (TED jumps to mind as first in THAT line) that they are simply un-American and despicable. But I am going to start my own channel on my nascent homestead right from the beginning, (ALL the triumphs and the travails from the first shovel thrust :) when I get my current house sold and buy some acreage in the Midwest. Right now I blog and blather a lot and have no problem with fighting and smashing people who mess with me online. (until we are all deleted of course, LoL... ) But I imagine that I am going to have to curb my pugnaciousness considerably (and bite my tongue 'till it bleeds) when I host my own channel just for public relations and business reasons. (dang) But, I am just shocked at the extremely high percentage of kind, positive and cheerful remarks you engender- considering the great mass of sophomoric dunderheads on RU-vid in general!!! Are you such a kind, gentle and karmically positive soul that that's just what you attract or do you actively delete the ass-hats? Maybe the general topic of homesteading simply leaves the moron clan bored to tears and speechless? Inquiring minds wish to know... :) And Happy New Year!!!

3Sphere I actually don’t delete the negative comments. I have deleted less than a handful only due to excess f-bomb usage. I try to keep the channel family friendly. Good luck with your channel sounds like your topic may be a bit more polarizing. Thanks for watching!
@3Sphere

Thanks Red, that says a lot about you. My channel will be all about homesteading and the synergy going on now between ideas from the old ways, new technology, organic farming & gardening, free range managed ranching and just all the thousands of new ideas, techniques and philosophy stemming from Permaculture and free thought in the homesteading explosion. So that won't be controversial by all indications, and in most cases, seems to be one of the few refuges of peace and love in the current American experience. Now though, as a blogger and a proud and jubilant Trumpian Deplorable I am very political and I really do enjoy the fight! As you perhaps may have noticed....... (LoL) there is a civil war going on in the country, basically between irresponsible, pie-in-the-sky Socialists and traditional Constitutionalists- with everything but actual lead flying between the two sides. (with notable exceptions :) I will happily lay down my weapons (maybe, probably) when I start my homestead and channel. I suppose I will have to if I want my channel to be anything other than a battleground. Then again, I suppose most homesteaders are conservatives anyway because it takes common sense to succeed on the land. Most liberals will fail anyway at this because it is just a fantasy for them and they don't have what it takes to survive without their extensive support systems. They are city people who will fail at their fantasy and return to the safe confines of concrete and blacktop. There are many of them on RU-vid already. It's sad and they just look out of place on the land. So anyway, it's good to know that you and other Homesteaders and back to the dirt people are generally bathing in the love of the land and the better angels of our nature. In fact, that has HUGE positive portent for the future. Because when I look all about at the general decay of the society around us and the disgusting state of the food supply of the masses with its chemical pesticides and fertilizers, biological (GMO), antibiotic and hormonal contamination, I see the Homestead and organic movements as the new spring growth bursting up from below the mat of the dead and dying old paradigm. I want to be much more a part of the new solution! I want to be ALL IN! It is very exciting! Sorry I bloviate so much. This is why I blog a lot. Just don't know when to quit. I do love it so! :) I will try to curb my irrational exuberance on your channel in the future....! :) Merry Christmas!!!

with record prices for woods many land owner's are interested in selling standing timber.

It would be great for someone is younger and healthy that would be interested in living in a place where they could set up a portable sawmill. It would give someone plenty of room to cut and store lumber.

Hey there, I noticed your channel, and I see your having a pork operation, I haven't delved into your channel too much yet, but have you ever heard of acorn finished pork? I noticed you have large areas of wood, and you could easily implement a silviculture plan by taking out less valuable trees and leaving oak trees(and/or other hardmast) and save on feed in the fall by doing so, and supposedly acorn finished pork has a sweeter, nuttier flavor and could be marketable as a specialty pork.
@RedToolHouse
@RedToolHouse 6 лет назад
Ezekiel reed we did a video on this very subject. My last herd of pork we just processed finished this fall of 5 acres of oak wood lot. We have a bounty of acorns this year.

Ah okay, yeah i heard the market of artisan hams revolves around acorn finished pork,especially in spain's "Dehesas"(a silvopasture system spain has) with a famous ham called Pata Negra. If you ever get into making your own special "appalachia" ham of some sorts.

I see lots of things and am curious as to what the price is really. I have 64 acres with mostly hardwood, and most timbers 50+ years old. what did you get per acres, and what tree size did you decide to clear? I am thinking I could do 20% to pay for a portion of my land so I can free money for more next to me?

You didn’t give any estimate as to ~ how much money per acre or how much per tree of the different species of hardwood or softwood. That would of been helpful.
@RedToolHouse
@RedToolHouse 2 года назад
Too many variables to be worth it. You could have an acre of dense white oak barrel stave grade that would be worth 20 times more than a scrub acre. Species value changes almost daily. Oak has stayed up for years but it depends on the location as to how much per board ft. They take into consideration how far they have to truck it for selling to the processor.

Forester OK he gets his 15-25% off the top no matter what, these foresters are so full of crap. Closed bids to companies they are getting kickbacks from, he did not say they only send letters to companies they want.

Truer words never spoken.. Land owners are taken advantage by foresters. If you understood how much $$ these guys are taking from small property owners is appalling
@nhmountains5683
@nhmountains5683 Год назад
If you had loggers in mind wouldn’t you tell the forester to send bid letters to them as well as the others? The forester I deal with has 12 loggers he has dealt with but I can request additional loggers. He gets 10%.
