Sailing through US Virgin Islands. Enjoying the delights of St. John beaches, the charm of Charlotte Amalie and an interesting road tour of St. Thomas.
From Soper’s Hole, Tortola, British Virgin Islands, we motor the short distance across to the island of St. John, US Virgin Islands, where we check-in at Cruz. The beaches of north-west St. John are extremely beautiful and we relax for full 5 days, exploring by dinghy and trekking. Visiting resorts still devastated by hurricane Irma and the ruins of Annaberg sugar plantation.
We then gently sail over to the busier and more developed main island of St. Thomas, and on the way, we pass our friends on s/v Gale, a Swan 66. On St. Thomas we have an interesting road trip around the whole island in a dashing red Jeep and spend some time to capture the Danish architecture of Charlotte Amalie, the main town in the USVIs. 17-26 March 2019
Next episode: La Culebra, Spanish Virgin Islands
Visited on St. John: Cruz town, Waterlemon Bay, Mary Bay, Francis Bay, Maho Beach, Trunk Bay, St. Peter Bay, Honeymoon Beach, Cinnamon Beach, Cruz Bay, Hansen Bay and Annaberg sugar plantation.
Visited on St. Thomas: Great St. James Island, Charlotte Amalie, Danish Quarter, French Quarter, Brewers Bay, Perseverance Bay, Bordeaux Bay, Hull Bay, Magen’s Bay, Coki Beach, St. John Bay, and Nazareth Bay.

My first episode seen if yours. Thank you for the tours by sea and by land! Even if the water weather did not fully cooperate everything was lovely and well edited. You two are also adorably entertaining! I’ll probably be watching all the rest of your videos now ❤😊

Good afternoon to you all. I hope this message finds you very well? I have recently been thinking of you your wife and more importantly your breathtaking boat. The care and attention you have taken maintaining your floating home is second to none. Wherever you are in the world I hope you are enjoying life to the full and are constantly looking for the next sunrise and sunset. Thanks for sharing your life previously and your humour. Take care and best wishes.

I've watched (and re-watched) your wonderful videos so many times and have been meaning to thank you for all the great journeys you both have taken me on. You and your wife exude such warmth, class, and charm, few things are on youtube quite as wonderful as seeing you both laugh and smile. If all the world were as kind and lovely as you two, it would be paradise indeed...though adding a nice beach to the equation never hurt!

@@SailCloudyBayI subscribe to your channel. I enjoy your commentary. Do you talk to locals? Or get guided tours? If yes, I’d love to hear those comments added to the videos. USVI has a lot of history. Talking to a proper local would give your stories about Robert Oppenheimer “Father of Atomic Bomb”, his named Beach, his old cottage where he lived and his beachfront end of life story. They would tell you stories about Grammy award winner Kenny Chesney, a resident of St John’s too.

We used to call St Thomas....Dirty Disneyland. Surprisingly...even right out of Charlotte Amelie...if you drive up the hills, it is quite lovely and mainly small residential homes. The North side is hilly, breezy and beautiful at elevation. Thanks G & O for the typically great content! I miss St Thomas...a little...lol.

Hi Glen, yes Magen's bay can get a little crouded on cruise ship days. It gets over 1 million visitors a year. The beach and sister beach Linquist beach are privately owned by a family who bought the properties in 2003 from the Fairchild family. The purchase included the Fairchild Castle at the top of the ridge. I may open it up for public tours one day. It would make a great addition to the visitor tour itinerary. It has never been public ally seen. The five dollar beach fee pays for the staffing, maintenance and cost of managing Magens Bay and Lindquist beach. Magens Bay authority is our privately managed park service originally set up by the Fairchild family now managed by our trust. Love your show. I get tired watching you do that mega refit on your boat all by yourself. Amazing energy you have and fearless at doing any and everything best Pete..

Guys, thank you so much for this entertaining series of videos. I'm in isolation (traveling for work) and this has entertained me for the last 14 days. I would love to see some of the more practical side of things you have to deal with: planning for trips, stores and spares you stock up on, dealing with immigration, have you ever had issues with customs (alcohol, drug inspections), fears of piracy? Communications with harbour masters over moorings arrivals and departures. Brilliant series of videos, and I love Cloudy Bay, hope to see you around the islands some time.

@@SailCloudyBay no it was through our local college around Chicago. we stayed at a primitive old science base for 4 weeks and then 6 people on 3 different 46ft sailboats for 7 weeks around the BVI. writing about sociology and marine biology. not much on the Island, as you know. we took " sun showers " just water from a catch w gravity. the old base was for NASA scientists to monitor people being isolated. part of the base has metal pods offshore in 24 ft of water for living quarters. ( to simulate being in cramped space flight equipment) we did Not go into them. but dove around them. i heard that they were still there before Irma. ill track down exact location. cinnamon Bay, but i will double check.

Thanks for yet another great video. It always makes me happy to find one of your new videos. How big of a problem is it with dinghy/outboard theft? I see you sometimes leave it at a dock for a long time. It's sad that you can't keep your things for yourself.
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 3 года назад
Hi David, Not sure how you get to see our videos, but if you go to our channel page (Sail Cloudy Bay) you will find them all. We recently just started editing some older footage from 2019. This video you commented on is the latest we posted. Yes, unfortunately dinghy and and outboard theft is very common in the Caribbean. Often they will steal the dinghy just to get the outboard. Our outboard was stolen in Puerto Rico while the dinghy was tied the public docked. We had the outboard locked to the dinghy and the dinghy locked to the dock but they still stole it even in a public place. Normally they get stolen when people leave them tethered to their boat at night. We always, without fail, raise our on the davits.

You have a classy yacht and a classy crew. Forgive the personal remark but so good to see a lady wearing an elegant dress. Your films are in a class of their own. I'd love to see Cloudy Bay perform in a real rough sea and see how she compares with an Oyster of similar size and vintage. Fair winds you two!

Hi Nick, thanks so much for that personal remark, it means a lot to us, and particularly to Oana. If you take a look at our channel page, Oana has made a playlist of "best sailing videos". Lots of Cloudy Bay in big seas. But the only really rough conditions we have been in was from Gibraltar to Canaries - and we didn't film much in those days.

Another fantastic video. The colours of the sea and beaches are amazing. Do you think cruising in the Caribbean is better than cruising in the Mediterranean? Would love your perspective. Thanks again for a great video.
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 3 года назад
Good question Darren. Difficult to give a definitive answer. Certainly the sailing conditions are much better in the Caribbean but while some islands are beautiful, others are an environmental disaster by the local population. While the Caribbean locals are both pleasant and intersting, they are all pretty much the same. Whereas in Europe the cultures are so much more varied as you cruise around. And of course there is nothing to compare the towns and cities that you can visit on the coasts of Europe. So there are pluses and minus to both.

Hi again, been watching your videos and I love them. I am in the process of learning to sail. At what wind speed do you generally decide to reef? how do you go about reefing in terms of which sail you reef first? at what wind speed would you reef in a 22ft boat? Keep up the great videos and thank you
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 3 года назад
Josh, sorry for the late reply. That question really depends on the boat and the rig. The key thing is that there is a point where the boat starts to get pressed too much by the wind ... and you will get to know that point. And when you reef down you will find her sailing just as fast but much more pleasently.
