EP7 - TOUGHEST day, crossing the CHO LA PASS - EVEREST BASE CAMP and Gokyo lakes trek 2017

We get up early to start our tough day of trekking, crossing the Cho La pass, and over the Khumbu glacier - but wow, it was worth it for the amazing views!
One thing is for sure, vlogging is a steep learning curve - we know this isn't perfect and we're working on all sorts of things to improve these, especially audio quality - while we learn and improve however, we wanted to keep you up to date with our adventures.

Has anyone else crossed the Cho La pass? Did you find it hard like Gem did?

Did it in September 2018 - agree it was the hardest day on the entire Gokyo/EBC trek. Almost thought I would not make it to the top. And then going down the other side was very tough too!!

Great video! How much high altitude hiking experience did you have before that track? Did you have any altitude sickness symptoms and what did you do against it?

Thank you! We didn’t have any high altitude experience before we left. We did a few longer treks, but honestly we should have done a bit more general fitness training beforehand. We didn’t have any altitude sickness. We planned a nice slow route up with plenty of days to acclimatise - we had an extra day in Namche, and made sure we slept less than 400m higher than the previous night. I would just make sure you have extra time in case you need it, we saw plenty of people rushing who ended up getting helicopters off the mountain as they were so ill!

The Cho La pass doesn't seem that scary from this video! I hope to still have enough energy to go for it after trekking all the way up. Thanks for the tip about the charging, should really bring a bunch of charged powerbanks...

瑪利歐Mario it’s tough but not too scary! And the views are worth it :-) Yes power banks are super helpful - and pop your phone on airplane mode unless you need it, the battery will last way longer!

I'm sure Chola Pass can be quite scary when there is fresh snow. In this video it looked very dry.

Great video indeed and thank you for sharing 😀 👍, I have a few questions if you don't mind : What high altitude sunglasses are you using? Did you use a Trekking company? What camera are using?

Hey! Alex had Julbo sunglasses, and I (Gem) had Serengetti both cat 4 (and needed!!). This was shot with a mix of Fuji XPro 2 and Sony RX100iii. We used Eagle Treks to organise a Porter/guide for us, rather than joining an organised tour - and I’d highly recommend doing it this way, gives you flexibility if you get ill (as we did!) rather than having to cut your trip short. Hope that helps - happy to answer anymore questions you have!

Did Cho La pass with a bit of snow on it in october and we also had a lot of clouds sadly enough. I had a guide and was happy he was there. Couldn't always see the right path between the rocks and snow.. it's also very slippery and used my tiny spikes to go up and down the last part.. even slipped with the spikes going down. Most challenging day but so nice!

It's a fairly obvious path, and the route is quite busy in season as we did it - so yes possible without a guide! If there's heavy snow which they get at times it could be more challenging - but you can pay for a guide just to cross the Cho La Pass if needed. We really enjoyed having a guide to explain the mountains - it wasn't expensive, if you do want one check out eagle treks!

Stop complaining and talking so much. Irelevant topics, irelevant about the Steri pen, general knowledge would have told you electronic water purifier in Everest region is a stupit idea. And your pricing is wayy of.

No, spikes weren’t required - Alex wore hiking boots and Gem wore trail running shoes!

You’re at a different time of year to us, but allow more time than you think you need (we got sick so glad we had an extra day!) pack light, but in layers - merino is excellent because you can wear it multiple times! And take a way to sterilise water rather than buying plastic bottles, the pollution is a real problem! Stay safe and enjoy!
