Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
Leather gear: www.masonleath...
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballi... that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

I took a heavy bodied Michigan 7 pt at about 40 yds with a perfect broadside shot from a 20 foot treestand. Complete penetration so I didn’t find the bullet. The shot was behind the shoulder catching part of a rib going in and on the exit. Eye balling it the entrance wound was roughly an inch and the exit wound between two and three inches. The tissue damage to the heart and lungs was massive, with quite a bit of jellied slop remaining. Blood trail was immediate and significant though I didn’t need it. The buck went about thirty yards and dropped. I had been using the Hornady black which shot a tiny bit better at 100 yds. The difference may very well been the rifleman and not the ammo. It performed well on several deer, but I wanted to eliminate the lead. I couldn’t be happier with the Barnes .450 TSX ammo even though it costs somewhat more. Performance met and exceeded my expectations and I will continue to use it from here on out. Next year I’ll be using it in my 350 Legend as well expecting similar performance.

I absolutely love the Barns bullets. I shoot them in all my rifles from 45 & 50 cal muzzleloaders to my 7mm mag and every cal in between in my rifles. But I am a hand loader so it's not that hard to find them most of the time.

Expensive and hard to find, but the performance speaks for itself. I have a box of the 275 grain TSX bullets meant for the .460 S&W, I need to get around to loading them up.

They are a fantastic bullet! Iam pushing the 250gr and 275gr over 2400fps mind blowing performance shot many whitetails none took a single step!

Barnes did well but you should test Bear Creek Ballistics 240HV ammo at 2590fps. All copper cnc machined bullet with polymer tip. Flatter more kinetic energy similar expansion and weight retention. Our hunting party of 5 harvested big Illinois deer with 240HV. All one shot harvested deer. Good blood spray. All drt within 20yds.

This is my go to factory ammo. It shoots 3” groups at 300yrds. Not that I would shoot a deer at that distance. But I’m very confident with my set up. Thanks for your videos

I love your test. They are the best ballistic test. However without an accuracy test I don’t know if I want the bullet. If you could do a 100 yd group test this would be awesome. Keep up the great work

Thanks for your support! I do not typically show accuracy tests because me shooting my rifle will not be the same as you with yours, especially with solid copper bullets which two different rifles may shoot extraordinarily differently.

Every rifle will shoot every load differently. There's no point in an accuracy test.

The federal fusion, in my opinion, is a better round. It's cheaper, accuracy are neck and neck, the fusion is bonded and maintains its mass, but most importantly, I got golf ball sized exit holes and blood for days that would of made tracking a simple task but all deer went down in 70 yards or less.

Same results for me. The hole we found when gutting a deer was the biggest we’ve ever seen from a bullet.

I listened to an interesting podcast Q&A from Hornady where they talked about small group sizes and velocity discrepancies. They recommend shooting 20+ shots to get an average and to not be surprised by big differences when shooting 3-5 shots. Just thought I’d mention it since it came from an ammunition manufacturer

Cool video. If you can find them could you test 150 grain 270 Remingtons? It would really help me out with picking the best Remington ammunition for my 700 in 270win. I've tested some different brands and they all shoot about the same. But I'm not sure what to use for this hunting season. Thanks for the info.

It’s widely available from lots of retailers, I just checked. Barnes is the manufacturer, it is financially beneficial to them to wholesale it to end retailers in bulk first before selling to end users.

I just don't agree with the gel test results. They DO NOT line up with real would usage. During last year's deer season, I was able to use this ammo for the harvest of 3 whitetails. In all 3 instances, the bullet failed to exit the deer. 2 deer were broad side shoots, all out of a deer stand and 1 was quarter to. I had little to no blood. When I started tracking, I thought I was going to lose each of the deer. While each deer went down just out of sight, it was difficult tracking through thick cover. Durring dressing, I did not find the bullets. The shots on deer were less than 40 yards and I don't know if this had an impact. My gun also has a 20 inch barrel so my velocity will be a little higher. Might have this been the reason for my different results, maybe I guess. Typical copper bullets don't change much based on a little more velocity. They typically expand more and have a little less penetration. I just wouldn't think it would cause the bullets to nor pass through a whitetails chest cavity. Out of my bushmaster, this ammo produced 1.3 inch groups at 100yards. This is fantastic for a factory load and from an AR. It's just a shame that they didn't perform like typical copper bullets.

Horrible energy transfer on thin skinned game. If you don’t aim for the shoulder you’ll be tracking your game every time. A fragile FTX will drop deer in their tracks way better because the fragment and dump energy creating several wound channels. If your moose, pig, or elk hunting and want an exit it would do the job but there are better bullets out there. Never found a gun that will shoot acceptable accuracy using every Barnes bullet model made to date.
