Shore dive. The outgoing tide was strong. If I stopped to wrap the speargun line, it would take me 10 minutes to get back close. It was hard to hold your breath long enough when you have to work hard against the current. I saw shoals of small striped bass at the bottom. Standing still on the sand like on a treadmill against the outgoing tide current, and baitfish on top close to the rocks. Those stripers seemed not spooked by me. If I had seen a legal size one, I could have easily taken it.
2 friends saw me from their small boat. They gave me a ride to the Rockaway reef. 2 miles offshore from the beach. The water is still only 38-45 ft/ 11-14 meters deep.
I had left my phone, my water, my keys in my unlocked car. Sometimes you just have to seize the opportunity and trust the universe.
It was great to have a weight vest, as when I dive on shore dives it is about 5-8 meters deep, but diving twice the depth I need less lead to stay at the bottom. I don't want to make it hard to come up. These days I use 8-9lbs on the belt, 4lbs on the vest. If I had to ditch the belt with 4 lbs on I am still quite buoyant. The deeper you go the more you sink.
I could just not use the vest and have enough weight to stay at the 40 ft bottom.
Much small fish. I took another blackfish. 18in/45cm. I felt 2 are enough for a day even if the limit is 4. I prefer taking more predatory fish like bluefish, stripers, Spanish mackerels. But you need to be lucky to see those.
