We hate to fail. Failure makes us feel like we’re not meeting standards, and we usually consider it “the end.” However, failure is necessary for creativity, learning, and, surprisingly, discovery. So if failure can lead to innovation and discovery, how can we make it more tolerable? Video games, where failure is expected and even rewarded, can change how we think about failure and risk. Good games encourage players to take risks, experiment, and explore new ideas. In everyday life, the stakes are often too high to just try things out; no one would ever dream of building a rocketship for a manned space mission without any prior understanding of astrophysics. But in games, we can do that and more, and we learn a lot along the way.
Videogame researcher and designer Dennis Ramirez believes games are perfect for creating immersive and effective learning environments. Ramirez has been making games professionally, and independently, for over 10 years. His work on educational video games and failure has resulted in award-winning educational games, and invitations to speak at universities and companies internationally including Arhus University Denmark, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and LEGO.
