What was your MechWarrior 4 experience?
@roguerifter9724
@roguerifter9724 5 месяцев назад
Its my least favorite Mechwarrior game so far. Which sucks because I love the setting and the story. Many of my favorite Battletech stories are part of the larger Fedcom civil war. Plus the late 3050s through the 3060s are my favorite era because that period is when Mech designs I adore became fairly common instead of a few royal or limited production variants in the Star League era or a handful of rare designs in the Succession Wars. (All of which weren't introduced IRL until long after this game came out) I'm ok with the idea of weapon type hardpoints. But you need enough variety in Mech designs that players can create whatever they want as long as its remotely reasonable without leaving tons of empty hardpoints. And restricting adding things like Jump Jets was foolish. My favorite Mech type is pretty simple. Heavy class all anti-energy weapons, and jump jet equipped. There are no Mechs meeting those criteria in the base game even though multiple Mechs that meet those criteria were regularly used by both sides of the Fedcom civil war, which this conflict is a section of. The Mech selection in this game seems like the developers are trying to shove using multiple weapon types down the player's throat even if we really don't want to because there are no Inner Sphere Mechs in the base game without hardpoints for at at least two weapon types. And the developers missed the whole point of an Omnimech because most Omnimechs rarely have weapon mounts that wouldn't be omni slots in this system much less the non-omnislots outnumbering the omni mounts like in every Omnimech the game has. In fact if memory serves none of the game's Clan Mechs would include any none omni slots because the whole advantage of an Omnimech is being able to switch out the weapons and extra equipment quickly and easily as needed. Its like rather then letting the players pilot what we desired the developers were trying to make us pick from their favorite design concepts. And if we didn't really like those well it sucked to be us because the developers didn't care.

At the time, I was slightly disappointed. I'd started with Mechwarrior 3, and 4 felt like it was a step back in terms of realism. The mechs looked too bright and cartoony. However, with time I grew to appreciate 4 more (along with its follow-ups). Having a more restricted Mechlab was better for the reasons you've said - each Mech now has a reason to exist, rather than just picking the one with the best hitboxes. It's also utterly awesome when played with a Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joystick, which I'd newly acquired at the time (and still works!) - never has a game felt so... stompy!s)
@roguerifter9724
@roguerifter9724 5 месяцев назад
@@Zierlerpin But they need Mechs filling a wider variety of roles for the limits to work without leaving players frustrated. Especially those of us who know the setting and know Mechs we would like to use are available in the region the game but the developers decided not to include them. And the whole point of Omnimechs is they can easily be equipped with anything the pilot wants as long as the weapons and gear are available. How the Mechlab worked in 2 and 3 is exactly how Omnimechs are supposed to work. Its what made their development and in the early days before they spread among all the Clans possession of them such a significant advantage.

My dad *seemed* to play a lot of videogames right around the time I was born and shortly after (born '95). So I was fortunate enough to grow up in a house with a PS1 and a PC that could run games like MW. Our XP machine had titles like Quake 3/4, arcade cabinet emulators, Unreal Tournament, etc. I remember finding the box for Vengeance and asking his permission to play, as it was a "T" rated title! Even had a Microsoft Sidewinder to control everything. Took ages to download and install, but the install music was thrilling, and the information provided in the slides in the installer really pumped me up. I would also thumb through the manual to see the artwork / descriptions of different chassis. It was a different experience, for sure. Was too young to really understand the space opera storyline so I never really cared, and the "bad" acting kind of made them fun to watch. Distinctly remember sneaking into my parent's room around 5am MANY mornings before school so I could play a mission or two before I had to get ready for school. So Vengeance does hold a special place in my "gaming journey" or whatever, and it will always be my favorite. Mercs is buy and large a better experience in that engine. Black Knight could probably be argued to be better too (LOL) but a lot of my first mechwarrior experiences were with Vengeance, so its very special to me. Oh! Maybe its personal pref, but solely using the joystick, no keyboard, to control everything always provided me with the best control. Could always make finer adjustments when I can "stabilize" the base with my other hand.
@Zierlerpin

@@roguerifter9724 I can appreciate that. I've still never played tabletop, and I think a better balance of customisability has subsequently been reached in MWO and MW5 with modding. My point about stompyness still stands though 😀

I am probably one of the few people who really liked the mechlab in mechwarrior 4 and its expansions. Yeah it does limit customization, which sucks, but I really appreciated how it made each individual chassis feel unique. Looking back, the previous games had almost too much customization. to the point that all that really mattered was a mechs tonage.
@peedeeboy2543

100% agree. The mechlab in other games felt clunky and it always felt weird in the other games firing lasers out of missile racks because the games weren't advanced enough to have models that updated for different weapons being installed. My ideal Mechwarrior game would be the 3025 setting from Mechwarrior. The music and atmosphere from Mechwarrior 2. The more realistic / simulation combat of Mechwarrior 3. The Mechlab from Mechwarrior 4 (well, ideally the mechlab from HBS Battletech) and the modern graphics of Mechwarrior 5...
@anthonyspecf
@anthonyspecf 5 месяцев назад
I agree as well. I think it was a welcome change. As others have said it helps make chassis more unique instead of more tonnage = better. It isn't perfect. It does mean some chassis are left behind if they can't be made to work with the meta (seems to be gauss or LBX with LG Pulse lasers if I remember right), but it was a step in the right direction.

Oh, just now got to the part where you brought up the Mech Lab... I actually REALLY got to like the limitations on mechs, because it goes a long way toward making Clan gear special in a way that it always should have been but never was. Like, who cares if the Timber Wolf is an omnimech when the Orion is every bit as versatile? So, it bugged me at first, but it's grown on me over the years.

Mech 4 Mercenaries is a full game albeit in the same engine. It needs its own video. Plus the newest game is about to release a DLC campaign thats a prequel to the Solaris segment in 4 Mercs. The Battletech community basically adores announcer Duncan Fisher to the point the actor has done work with the community most notably some guest spots in character and out in the various Black Pants Legion "Tex Talks Battletech" series. And honestly 4 Mercs is my favorite mecha game period with only some of the Super Robot Wars SRPGs coming close. (A Portable and Alpha Gaiden being the more notable ones in being challenging but not abusive and still having plenty of Quality of Life things the 8-and even many 32 bit titles lack. They are fan translated however.) Note the actor is not named the same as his character.

So there are some lore reasons behind the way mw4 does its mech lab, though it is also simplifying it at the same time. You see mechs are not as freely customizable as they are in mw2. The way the mw2 mechlab is laid out and functions it is actually borrowing form the tabletop games mech construction rules and basically giving you free reign. But this is not really how mechs in Battletech work. Once you build it you cannot easily customize it without some serious work. In fact the whole thing that makes Clan Omnimechs special is that they can be easily customized as the weapons are in omni pods that make them easily swappable. So mw4 l does this by giving mechs slots and limiting what can go in each. A similar system features in mw5. I like the system since it allows for some tweaking but it also makes the mech platforms and variants feel different. In mw2 a mech was basically its tonnage and everything else could be changed so they all kind of were samey. Now with later entries the restricted slots make each chassis more unique. Been ages since I played mw4 but I am playing mw5 right now and there is real joy in getting certain variants because it has the slot layout you want. For example, a Hunchback HBK-4G and HBK-4P are very different mechs despite being the same base chassis. The 4G mounts a massive ac/20 while the other replaces it for an array of medium lasers. That being said, I also understand missing the free reign of the earlier games. Ultimately, it is a design choice. I also did not have to experience that change in a matter of weeks.

@Furluge
@Furluge 4 месяца назад
@@KeiNovaYou're welcome. BTW, when I keep explaining some of these decisions I'm not necessarily saying it's a better choice gameplay wise. Just trying to explain where the decision likely came from. To be honest, PGI could probably make a better mech sim game if they made one from the ground up to be a mech sim game, but that would require a monumental amount of work, as the fiction, setting, and theme are what really give a game that connective tissue to make what you're doing engaging. Without it you're just doing a bunch of random activities and it gets boring very fast. It's why no one really spends all their time in Instant Action even though all of the game play is in there. As it is now they make some tweaks and concessions to take advantage of the change in medium but they largely try to stay withing the game framework. Though personally, and I know this may sound controversial, I kind of wish they'd adopt the firing circle mechanic like world of tanks uses. (Basically, the more you are moving the more spread there is.) It feels a bit like shots cluster too much into one location so survivability suffers a lot. But the current game is also tweaked to work with how things currently are so I guess it's ok. In the online version though it makes mechs like the Atlas laughably weak as they've been given a massive center torso section.

@matty101yttam

Absolutely, in competetive it really stood out, ecm, narc, beagle, jump jets...all the gadgets made for a good counterplay to each other. An example: we were going against some known "pop-tarts" (guys who load out the timberwolf mkII with gauss and jj's, then hide behind cover, jump up fire a shot and drop down behind cover again. Being the attackers we got to choose the map and settings...so we took a fairly open map with almost no buildings and pea soup fog. The high fog dropped visibility to about 100m, the natural terrain meant there was no sharp/square buildings they could hug up against for cover....then we loaded up with ecm(reduces enemy radar by like 200m or something),beagle(increases your own radar by 200m) and long range missiles...then in that pocket of 400 meters where they couldn't see us but we could see them we stayed and rained missiles from the fog...they really couldn't do anything. Also at the time the biggest mech we could take that had ecm, beagle and enough missiles slots for this was a hellbringer which meant we under-tonned them by about ....what 30t per player(cant remember the weights of a mkII and loki/hellbringer) The community was also great since before the match there was a couple of comments how the pea soup fog wont help by the other team but at the end they took their L and gave us props for good tactics.

Mechwarrior 4 was my first Mechwarrior, I had seen some stuff from the 3rd game but I was very much a MW4 kid. I don't get why people hate on this game, it's got a decent story, some corny amateur acting and I like the limitations of the Mechlab, mostly because it makes the game both more true to the actual lore of Battletech (cause Inner Sphere mechs actually do have limitations on what they can slot in each socket) as well as making the game more challenging to and stategic to play. That being said, I think MW4 Mercenaries was the better of the game, though that is just me. Edit: In terms of the writing, I think they didn't want to alienate new players? I get that it had a much younger demographic than Battletech normally gets.

The story, I think, it mainly trying to cater to a new audience but also old MW fans, and Battletech fans. It throws a lot of characters and concepts out that are beyond just gamers. Ok, I gotta let loose a few things here....first off, I am old, I played the first version of Battletech called Battledroids, loved the unseen when they were in Anime and got pissed when they got removed, played every PC game that had mechs in them, but for me Mechwarrior 4 was the ultimate because I beta tested it (and Crimson skies, mechcommander 1 & 2) and it turned out the way I expected it. Seriously, character development and story were not so important to most of us, we wanted to kill mechs! The limitations of the mechlab did not bother most of us because it removed the dreaded missile boats of MW3, and boats in general. The controls were awesome for joystick, I even made custom force feedback setups which were added to the game. So obviously I really loved the game, especially the multiplayer aspect. So, singleplayer was not important to most guys I knew, and that was much more important to the longevity of the game anyways. And speaking of that, think of all the mods that came out over the years, the unseen got added, different arena combat zones and all kinds of things which held me over till MW Online came out. The game is/was great for its time, it made an impact and mech/battletech games are still going strong because of it. My opinion, and I stand by it.

The slot limits also stop people from just putting everything in the left and right torso with the exact same builds each time. I hated it at first, but it gave me reasons to do diverse mech setups

The ultimate way to play this era of mechwarrior? Well... youd need the arcade case. Had a widescreen, foot pedals, joystick, throttle lever and all of that was mounted inside a translucent yellow plastic ball driven by a series of hydraulics. It simulated mech stride and provided modular haptic feedback settings for damage modeling. There were even settings for gyro feedback, meaning if you leaned too far over the chair wouldnt save you. You had to crane your neck and back to keep the opening in the cockpit ball pointed at the screen clearly. Pretty similar to the books. Thats the best way i ever saw. Ended up getting kicked out of that chuck e cheese that night. After the constant rumble of autocannon fire the car ride home felt like riding a silk cloud.

not many people know this but there's actually some leftover mission description text in the files of the mechwarrior 4 vengeance multiplayer beta test from 2 months before release... apparently peter was originally meant to survive and you were going to the palace to rescue him. the design document was also recently found and there was originally meant to be 3d killable people similarly to mechwarrior 3 and the entire game was meant to be much more expansive and ambitious than it ended up being with dynamically destructable terrain and buildings and branching story paths. some of those early ideas were actually fulfilled later in black knight and mercenaries but it never really got to the full extent of the original visions they had.

I started with MW4:Mercenaries so I'll save some of my thoughts for that video, but one thing I adore about MW4 is its visual presentation. When people say it's cartoony, I think it's more of an anime influence, which is reflected in some of the battlemech redesigns. I love the animations, as it actually feels like the battlemechs are huge, heavy machines swaying side to side with each step-- I think a lot of Battletech/Mechwarrior games make the mechs too stiff to convey the momentum of their movement. The other thing about the visuals which I think no game since has tried to emphasize is the scale of the world. You're in a giant robot, but the environment around you is colossal. The mountains are still huge, the plains are still vast, the skyscrapers still tower above you. It makes you feel insignificant, and then you realize how much smaller someone who isn't in a giant robot must feel.

My biggest complaint about Mechwarrior 4 was the way that the armor zones were laid out on some mechs. The "center torso" region on some of them was so enormous that it was almost impossible to hit anything else, making them feel a LOT weaker than the competition. I've played mw4 for ages, but Mw3 was for me the best game due to being much closer to the original weapons values. Mw4 deviated with boosted dmg and armor and the slot sytem. The graphics left a bad aftertaste, but it was made for multiplayer. Even the tesla-pods for real cockpit simulator feeling use this game as base now. But if you use the Mw4mercs pack that is now free, it adds tons of mechs and equipment. Just a note to the dmg display, you switch to htal view to see exactly how much is left of the target parts. Now with MWOnline (since 2011) and MW5mercs we got a revival for our stompy robot gaming. With mw5 having tons of mods, you can decide between hardpoint sytem or free mechlab...

Mech 4 is and always will be my fav. Still play it every year. Mech 4 mercs is single handedly the greatest game I’ve ever played, and the music from these games beat the other 3 mainlines by a long shot. The mech lab I was a huge fan of because it actually gave purpose to choosing chassis. You couldn’t just pick a 60 ton and do the same thing. In lore, the IS mechs especially functioned like this mech 4 lab, and it felt more immersive. I should actually pick a catapult for long range instead of a ebon jaguar

MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries was a standalone game. It was made by a completely different development studio and, after MekTek brought it back from ruin - it was given such a major overhaul that it didn't even resemble MechWarrior 4 anymore. It is, aside from name, a completely different game. I'll be getting to it. But saying Vengeance is good because that game is good is a reach. It isn't bad either, it's just middling is all. Music is about taste, so if that is how you feel - that is perfectly valid. If you watch further into the video, I do state that it led to some feeling of individuality. However, only MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries and MechWarrior 3 got it 'lore' wrong. Everything else was OmniMechs (aside from Mech1 which was all presets). That being said, assigning a Mech certain role is still up to choice - as no matter how much customization is controlled - it still leads to wacky combinations. Even here. You can strap all sorts of mismatched crap to a Mech and tweak it to move in just about any way you want as long as you have the tonnage. There are just limitations as to what weapon type goes where - not what specific weapon goes where. Ultimately, it's really great it's your favorite. But not everyone shares that opinion. I look at things as objectively as I can. MechWarrior 4: Vengeance, NOT Mercenaries, is a middling game that flickered in and out of gaming history.

I enjoyed this one in general. However I also remember the escort missions in Vengeance sucking so hard they kind of killed escort missions across all of gaming for a while. And I HATED the hardpoint system, which made zero sense if you'd played tabletop, MW2 or 3, or Heavy Gear. The whole real point of it IMO was to allow the Mech Pack DLC variants to feel special, which is my biggest problem with vanilla MW5 now. In the plus column you could download templates for each chassis and paint your own 100% custom skins for it.

My "short" review of MW4 Vengeance from memory: 1. Cheesy writing. Not campy, cheesy. 2. Live action video and cut scenes were terrible, and I am glad they were cut for Black Knight and Mercenaries. 3. The mech designs/representations are iconic. 4. I love the balance of the mech lab. Critical hard points, weapon sizes, and balancing armor location / amount were great. 5. Campain was oretty good. 6. Lancemate progression was solid and got better with Mercenaries. 7. Not having the Black Market from Black Knight or Mercenaries can be felt, as you piled up salavage and no way to unload 400 small lasers. 8. Related to the mech lab, I got to toy around with many weapons systems and combinations rather than just MW3 laser boat spam. 9. I have a memory of the maps l, mission objectives, and opposition on those maps being a lot of fun. Very rewarding. 10. Also related to the mechlab and loadouts, your lancemates' tactics [or lack thereof] impacted what the best builds for them should be. From memory: Lancemates do NOT take advantage of quick recycle time. They do NOT churn out high DPS. Instead, load them out with harder hitting weapons with a slower recycle time to get a higher DPS out of them. Similarly, they have bad aim with SRMs and will fire LRMs right into hills and buildings, so try to only give them line of sight weapons: PPCs, Large Lasers [but not pulse], [LBX/normal] AC 10 and 20. Let them score big damage when they hit, and don't expect them to be trigger happy. As a result, as the main player, I like to play a support role. AC2 sniper, LRM boat, stuff like that. The Catapult is a fun mech to use while directing your Lance.

I'm well aware of MW4's popularity but personally my biggest issue was MW4 never discovered all the potential MW2 and MW3 had stashed for future games. MW4 even downgraded in some aspects. And speaking of playing MW games with a joystick: in 2001 I had two Thrustmaster joysticks, so it was natural to come up with an idea to slave mech's movement to one joystick and mech's torso/aiming to the other, thankfully Trustmaster's software let me do that (via some pain in the neck ofc). In the end, the two joysticks variant was sure a lame way to play (as compared to the efficiency of keyboard/mouse) but at the same time it provided a feeling of pure authenticity.

To be frank, Mechwarrior 4 MechLab was actually the most enjoyable. Yes, you cannot CHEESE that much as in previous iterations, but it makes much more sense tech-wise, and, as you said, it stresses the individuality of each mech.

You definitely hit on a core problem. Customization sounds great, but it often ends up making 'Mechs feel less distinct. It's tempting to optimize loadouts into the same few patterns, erasing that feeling of each 'Mech having a special role. Honestly, I'm not sure there's a perfect solution. Without customization, designs feel more unique but less flexible. With it, you gain freedom but lose some of that specialness. Most 'Mechs end up feeling superficially different, modified to play the same way. It's a frustrating trade-off, and I've grappled with it a lot.

I got into the series with MechAssault (would love a video on those) and I actually prefer the slightly bouncier animations. It made the mechs feel a bit more capable of movement instead of the more stiff animations that make movement feel cumbersome. I also think MechAssault has the best sound design and would love for future MW titles to try to pull from it.

I still replay 4 every now and then. I wish 3 were easier to get working but it has problems on newer hardware that makes the game unplayable. The mechlab isn't a mis-step, it's more lore friendly- Inner Sphere Mechs are suppose to be hard/expensive to modify while clan mechs are easy to customize, they're suppose to be that way. I'm glad they made it how they did- the MW2/3 labs were kind of boring, the only thing that set mechs apart was tonnage, they have personality in 4 and it's not just about how many medium lasers you can fit on a mech without blowing yourself up in one shot. Also- water DOES cool your mech off faster, and different Biomes have different cooling rates. This is a game you don't so much play for the lore, the story is more of an afterthought and I love the cheesiness, it's charming to me. For it's time this was a great game, and is still fun to me. It kinda seems sometimes like you're treating it as a game that just came out, for it's time, back in 2000 it was ahead of its time and it's still a fun game to me- I don't replay many games.
@KeiNova

I didn't say it was a misstep, I said it was hobbled. I said not including other Mechs and releasing iconic ones as Mech-Packs was a misstep. I did say later that it leant to a more unique feeling for each chassis. MW2 Mechs were supposed to be like that, they are Omni-Mechs. And water does not cool off your Mech in this game, I tested it repeatedly and even showed footage. It does not. It does in MW3, and it was one of my favorite tactics in some missions. It is cheesy, it was just plain and odd. I'm treating it like a MechWarrior game, like the rest of them I cover. It's based on the elements at hand, I don't do handholding or base anything on nostalgia. Just what it is, purely. If you like it, that is fine. I don't give special points for something being meaningful to certain individuals or time periods.

I always thought Mechwarrior 4 was a bit odd, the weapons are mostly hitscan so laser and auto cannons kinda feel terrible. Some fights also feel ridiculously drawn out at times. It has an interesting atmosphere though and I'm a big fan of the animation work. MW4 Mercs is better I think, but shares a lot of the same flaws. They are still great games though. MW3 just had an amazing atmosphere and better core gameplay mechanics that make it more immersive and memorable in some ways. I always felt each game had something to offer, and I wish i could just blend them all together, lol. 5 does in SOME ways, but the procedural generation is both a strength and a terrible curse.

I played MW2 for the first MW experience - then MW3 and MechAssault and MW4:Vengance, BK & Mercs. What 4 did well and may be overlooked for was online play. I don't mean that it would stand out by today's standards. But the clear features of the lobby, the manner of configuring the server options, and 3rd party server tools made it great. Good online play bolstered large online communities like DropShip Command, MekTek, NetBattletech. Battletech and Mechwarrior was sustained through lean years by these groups and others. For those of us at that time play, the video clips would not be analyzed with such a critical eye. Tiberian Sun and MechCommander 2 had similar kinds of live-action elements that were still new and validating for the market. No one needed the story arc or delivery of SG-1, B5, or Farscape to be entertained in this context. You hit on the big issue of the MechLab - that was tough - but the biggest killer to online play was that lasers were point-of-impact-locked. You couldn't rotate to spread already-locked-laser damage and you could be torn up easily at 1k by a NovaCat or Daishi loaded with ERLLs. But there were good things too that got left behind: a rear-view cam, team mate readouts that you can cycle through (a great command tool) and a rational Gauss cannon fire mechanic(precharged after fire - saddly missing from MWO because reasons), a flood-light for dark areas, multiple HTAL/visual display options for team and enemy mechs, the ability to easily fire right/left and downward(during JJ). Additionally, with a client-server model, we could run our own game servers with options for everyone to vote on maps, the option to see - compare - and force equal team tonnage - pure or mixed tech - and lock first-person play. So many options for playing this with others - MWO locked so many things down. And MW5 as of this writing still only allows very limited size multiplayer. Yes the newer games are better, but they also abandoned good ideas from MW4.

My first entry was MechWarrior 4, but my experience with it was a bit of a roundabout one. A decade and some change ago, when I was about 6 or 7 maybe, at an arcade, I played this wave-based Mech game in a transparent orange semi-dome-shaped cockpit. I played as what I then did not realize was an orange Thor. The cockpit cabinet had 3 games on it, one of which being Crimson Skies, and the other being a game with *what I then also did not recognize as an Uziel.* Since then, I held a vague haze of that memory in my mind. I couldn’t remember what it was called though. That was until years later, when I had been introduced to MechWarrior 2 by The Super Best Friends, and I had decided to finally take the plunge to try out the series *for myself.* After watching a 45-minute long tutorial, and spending even longer, perhaps multiple days, trying to get the game to run, it finally booted up AND I COULD PLAY! I loaded up an instant action game in an Atlas, to practice the controls, AND IT FINALLY CLICKED! I exclaimed “HOLY SHIT! THIS IS THAT GAME I PLAYED AN ARCADE VERSION OF YEARS AGO!” I was OVERJOYED to have finally solved this mystery that had been in the back of my head FOREVER! Then, I went on to play through most of the series except for MechWarrior 1, Ghost Bear’s Legacy, MechWarrior 2 Mercs, and the Mech Commander games.

I feel like the MW3 mechlab is way too much freedom and results in most mechs feeling overly samey and lacking any real variety. I think the MW4 system and its subsequent usage in MWO and MW5 is the best way to implement a mechlab, allowing the player a good amount of weapon and engine customization but limiting it to where each chassis feels unique. Though I personally prefer MW5 with the Yet Another Mechlab mod for additional customization and unique perks/traits between variants for added variety.

My ideal MechWarrior game looks like 3 and plays like 4. 4 is imminently playable, even with the somewhat hobbled mechlab. While annoying, I can see why they changed it. It never really made sense how you could fully customize any mech (especially in 3) down to the engine. The change did somewhat give a reason for Omni mechs to stand out whereas pretty much every mech in previous games was essentially an Omni mech. Mech 4 changed the way weapons fire operated fundamentally on a joystick with buttons firing specific weapon groups, and that was a huge fantastic change that seems to now be the standard (as seen in MWO and MW5).

@@KeiNovaThere are old downloads floating around and I'll give some info on it's history as much as I understand it and condensed so it's not a wall of text. The MekTek team made packs that over time added a lot of mechs and weapons. In 2010 they got permission from Microsoft itself to release MW4:Mercs with the MekPak, at this point it would be MekPak 3, for free which also includeded the mechs from the Clan and Inner Sphere add-ons, that lasted for three years. Some of those mechs like the Deimos would become canon. In 2013, MekTek shutdown and free distribution stopped so you technically can't legally get it or the mod but if you download it Microsoft isn't going to come knocking at your door because all it would accomplish would be bad press. People consider it abandonware at this point, although there are rumors in 2020 that the MekTek team was back together and we're making MekPak 4. I would keep emailing Microsoft support.. monthly and obsessively asking when will we get Mechwarrior 5 only to finally get an email talking about Xbox and Mechassult... I believe that was the nail in the coffin for my beloved series. The Mechwarrior 5 we have today in my personal opinion is poorly developed garbage that could barely pass as a demo compared to the older versions. Great! I love MechWarrior 4 Vengeance. A very atmospheric and cool game. The design of the mechs, weapons, etc. is great. It has one of the best cinematics for the game. The trailer is straight very brutal, it was even a pity for the robot, he got hit hard in his steel balls a couple of times 3:59 ⚡ 🤖 😆

Started with MW2 then MW4. Haven't actually played MW3 yet (did try 1 for a few hours, not my jam). So far MW2 it still my fav. MW5 is alright but I can't stop comparing it to MW2. All these tools, all this technology. Why can't these dumb bastards just remake what MW2 had? Bloated budgets? Too many devs? Graphics too sparkly? How have we regressed over the last ~30 years? I did enjoy playing a Flea in MW4 sportin flamers or machine guns though.
@KeiNova
@KeiNova 4 месяца назад
I noticed all the mainline entries have some sort of thing that forced them to rethink and prioritize certain elements - it always benefitted in the end, because the right focus was applied. Honestly, I think that MW5 was way too focused on graphics. I tried it and it was... something.

Disagree on the Mech Lab. One of the main issues of the previous Mechwarrior Games is that due to the near unlimited customization of the Mechs it pretty much guts the uniqueness of each mech that is brought into battle. On top of that it just forces you to do the same build, shove lasers into legs and torso and forgo arms. Lame.

That was because they were Clan Mechs, Omni-Mechs. That is what they are capable of. It's cannon, I've learned.

I picked up the title and subsiquent novels after I played mechwarrior 2(?) on the psx. I was a poor kid at the time, so a 3d mech game was a revelation. Afterward, I picked up every novel i could find at every dusty book store i visited. This was a time before barns and nobel after all. I've been a staunch supporter of the series ever since, and I'm 35 now. I dont like CCGL or PGI, especially CCGL trying to make everything political about trans rights and such. The universe is literally set in 3500-3600. It didnt matter whos gender was what or what sexuality meant and for the longest time there was no romance subplots or sex in any of the books. It didnt matter. The series was and is about big stompy robots and fictional political feudalism. Key word being fictional.

I'm 35 too and played MW2 on the PSX first as well! I wasn't aware of a wider series though, only MechCommander. I don't really agree with the social/political things going on either, so I stay FAR away from mentioning stuff like that on my channel. It doesn't have a place here at all.

Nah, they are the same. Just upscaled. Just look up any video and compare. It depends on the paint selection too, but this is a common complaint by many.

@@KeiNovaWrong, I worked on the HD pack for mech4 and I've seen the size of the textures, they're the same size (512×512) just cleaned up with a more fancy newish metalic look to make it seem like its of higher quality, on the base game mechs look really rusty and old. Try reinstalling the game without the HD mech textures addon and see for yourself

Some corrections: 1. the mechlab was either loved/hated due to how it balanced some builds. MW3 was heavily flawed in a way that every mech was an omnimech and the UI was very basic. Honestly, one of the most balenced mechlab with mwo being the best. 2. Water did cool you down... 3. PPCs are meta in this game
@KeiNova
@KeiNova 2 месяца назад
Well, the Mech lab change was very divisive. It wasn't really balanced at all and you could still do ridiculous things, it was just more in line with Inner Sphere lore for the time period. I mean, look at the comments here and you'll see how divisive it is. MW3 wasn't accurate, no. But it was fun as hell. Not only that, you still faced consequences for having a completely insane load out. You would fire 4 PPCs and blow up - it was hilarious. MWO is way WAY better then this with balance and customization. Like EONS ahead of kiddy-colorded puzzle blocks for people to understand what should go where. Water does not cool, not at all. I've tested it here and in Black Knight. It was a tactic I used in MW3 to use energy weapons and keep cool in bodies of water. It does not cool here. I think I literally showed a clip of it too, which baffles me why people argue this. And, PPCs blow in this game in comparison to other games. They suck so hard, it isn't even funny.
@TimberWulfIsHere
@TimberWulfIsHere 2 месяца назад
@@KeiNova I think your game version is botched then. Water certainly does enhance cooling. I've played these games way more times than sane. However maybe you were expecting MW3 levels of cooling? Which it's not, mw4s water cooling is far more muted. I mean, I quite literally ran hot AF builds in Mercs Solaris and planted myself in water and I could alpha for days, if I step outside of the water, it's basically game over. I would recommend finding the latest patches of the game; yours might be bugged because I can certainly replicate it on my end that water does indeed cool you down faster. You are the only person who has that opinion for ppcs in this game. Clan erppcs are quite literally ton for ton the best damage and ranged weapon you can get. The specs don't lie and neither does gameplay. If you feel they are weak then you are doing something wrong. The weakest they have been is in MWO and secondarily in mw5 with inflated armour and structure values and pretty poor velocity for ppc weapons overall.
@KeiNova

Mercs is a stand-alone game that has so many differences, it is practically a new game. This was just a review of the base game, not Mercs with all it's awesome improvements and patches. Mercs and this game are like night and day, I can tell you that much. Again, if you're comparing to MW4 Mercs, then you're talking about something that is an entirely new game. It's not even made by the same developers, this was FASA and that was Cyberlore.

I own it, but I've yet to actually play it. I heard recently it has procedural generation?
@LostInNumbers
@LostInNumbers 4 месяца назад
Yeah, the game is a mostly a sandbox game where you travel the inner sphere and take on contracts. This means that it needs a procedural mission, and by extention, terrain generation. The story missions and several of the quest chains are hand crafted, but the way the terrain works put some restrictions on what can be done even for those. Piranha games actually stated that one of the reasons MW5 Clans is a separate game, is so they can get rid of many of MW5 Mercs technical limitations, such as the ones on level design. I still love MW5 very much, with a couple of mods, such as YAML, Von Bioms and Coyote Missions, and a nice HOTAS the game becomes an amazing Mechwarrior sandbox and simulator experience.

How not to explain a setting, giant robot edition. If we are stomping around civilized regions then we need to be shown what a faction's core supporters look like. Is House Steiner run by corporate yuppies or flag-waving nationalists? Do Davion pilots wear medieval armor while piloting their mechs? What reason does faction x have to exist as a unified group rather then an alliance of separate settlements? Can a faction's ideology be distilled down into mementics, easy to understand? It's this failure at worldbuilding that has killed mechwarrior over the long term. Future derivative works such as Starsector, Brigador, and Lancer would do a far better job of explaining their respective settings then their inspiration ever did

Originally there were two main mission line in Mechwarrior 4 according to the design document. One Steiner one Davion. The davion one got made. My guess it was time constrains. Steiner was supposed to have completely different music too.

I think the problem was that every game assumes the player knows the Battletech IP. That was never the case, some people didn't even know what Battletech was. So, it's always like the complete story is out of reach. It took me a long time to even get what they were talking about when it came to the Lyran Alliance and the way they threw around words like Archon and whatnot. It wasn't easy to understand at all - even with this being the easiest game to understand.

Random about lancemate controls: As you approach MW5, I am reminded that if you wanted to, you could use VoiceBot to use voice commands with the game, making that part much more realistic, helping gameplay be as realistic as possible (keyboard and mouse is definitely how Mechs are ACTUALLY driven, wake up people! :P) It does (normally) take setting up with all commands you want, but I made a profile for MW5 that allows for lots of natural commands and you can still edit it yourself in case you have your own words or phrases you might use, and it may be necessary to add in your teammates names. Not a lot of work though; I wrote guidance in the description of the profile. I know this likely wouldn't be for your video, but it's not a mod, it's just adding another control option kind of like adding a joystick, and since MW5 is the only one I know to have a VoiceBot profile, since I made it myself for it lol, I wanted to mention it now so you can try out. I think it's awesome experience to not miss, and almost necessary because there's an awkwardness to how commands nornally work, IIRC. watch?v=CqtqJYn6VvI

IMO putting PPCs and shit on legs was retarded in all previous versions...the "color" coded weapon bay's make way more sense.
@KeiNova
@KeiNova 3 месяца назад
I never put PPCs on legs and that, it never clicked to me that that could be done. But the presence of customization leads to chaos no matter what, even if it's with color coded bays. Mech 2 and Ghost Bear though were lore accurate, as they were OmniMechs.
