Chincoteague and Assateague Islands are two of the most popular tourist destinations in Virginia.
Both islands offer a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy and are home to many wildlife you will see throughout Assateague National Park. Including wild ponies!
Things to do with Kids on Chincoteague Island:
-Visit the Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction
-Ride ponies at Chincoteague Island Pony Penning
-Explore Assateague Island National Seashore
-Visit the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge
-Check out the Chincoteague Bay Field Station
-Take a scenic cruise around Chincoteague (We used Saltwater Pony Tours)
- Grab a copy of Misty of Chincoteague at the local book store. Some of the motels and B&B sell copies as well
Things to do with kids on Assateague Island
-Explore Assateague Island National Seashore, make sure to stop at the visitors center!
-The beach on Assateague is wonderful
-Ride bikes across the bridge from Chincoteague over and around Assateague
Hike to the Assateague lighthouse. (It's maybe a 1/3 mile -it was about a 10 min walk for us. Very flat terrain.)
Lots of nature to see and trails to hike!

The Island Creamery get the espresso Oreo ice cream!

Restaurants to avoid:
Woody's BBQ was a bit overpriced (Over $50 for basic pulled pork sandwich and few sides) and hard to handle with kids, especially since it's outside and the mosquitos can be pretty viscous. Seating is pretty limited and the staff don't seem to care much.
Where to stay on Chincoteague Island:
-Chincoteague KOA features a playground and pool and gives you a place to camp
-There are also several hotels and motels in Chincoteague, as well as bed and breakfasts.
We stayed at the Refuge Inn, which was wonderful. The rooms are not huge when you have 3 kids but would be okay for a couple of family of 4. Luckily our youngest sleeps on a small travel cot yet. It has a really nice indoor pool and breakfast is included. The KOA is right over the fence from the motel. The motel also features some domesticated ponies you can visit while there.
Where to rent bikes on Chincoteague Island:
We did not rent bikes but rented beach chairs and an umbrella for our beach day from The Bike Depot, which is right beside the Refuge Inn. They also rent bikes. The gentleman working there might have also been the owner. Such a nice guy and great experience renting from them.
-There are several others, most are found off of Maddox Blvd You can also rent golf carts, scooters and low speed vehicles to ride around the island.
Overall, a family vacation to Assateague and Chincoteague makes for some pretty amazing memories. The people who live there are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They love their home and take care of those who visit.
