EPIC Game On The Lord of The Rings Custom Map | AoE2 

You defeated Mordor by distracting the with a battle at the Black Gate while Frodo sneaked into mount doom... Why is nobody pointing out how lore acurate this is?!?

That was glorious! Some really intensen moments and MANY dead heroes! One more thing: Don't do Denethor dirty. The movies did that already, which is why many people straight up dislike him, but there's more to it. He spent his entire life fighting against the forces of Mordor and defending his country (And holding the front line, preventing Mordor from reaching the realms west of Gondor). If you remember the Palantir (The round stone that Pippin picks up in Isengard): There is another one in the Minas Tirith ("The eyes of the white tower") and Denethor uses that one frequently. But Sauron has at least one Palantir of his own and whilst Denethor battled against Sauron over the control of the Palantir (Yes, a battle of mind against Sauron) and kept control over Gondor's Palantir, Sauron does still influences the stone and mostly shows him stuff that makes Denethor believe the war is hopeless (Which it actually is *). This is the reason for him slowly turning mad, but this development isn't seen in the movies. Now comes the crucial part: Denethor actually knows of the quest to destroy the ring and he uses the Palantir to watch over Frodo and Sam to some extend - up until the point when Frodo gets captured by Orks and brought to Cirith Ungol (The fortress guarding the mountain pass into Mordor). He then concludes that it is just a matter of time until Sauron would wield the one ring again and completely falls into dispair, resulting in the pure madness we see in the movies. He is a quite the tragic character and did much more for the fight against Sauron than he gets credit for. * Never forget that, if the ring is not destroyed, Sauron wins anyway. He does not even need to get the ring PS: The image of Frodo and Sam hauling ass up Mount Doom with Sauron right on their heels is quite the sight to behold!

I think I speak for everyone when I say I'd love to see Hera now play as Mordor

this scenario is so cool, it's FROZEN the devs must have spent YEARS building this. a HUGE map, with EVERY bit of terrain made by hand. then all the dynamic details ... a legend

What a great work, this is realy cool, every litle details, the voices, the quests, the characters, damn !!! The people who made this can be very proud of them, and more proud for giving such good time to other people playing this map ! Awesome !!!

SPOILER ALERT: That was one of the most epic climaxes I've ever seen in gaming!! Frodo and Sam making it to Mount Doom with Sauron two steps behind them and Sauron's allies screaming in chat. HAHAHA WOW!!

That was so incredibly fun to watch. So many highlights. Sauron chasing Frodo and dying was soo intense. You can't script that better.

Lord of the rings is such a great story you can read the books, watch the movies countless times and still only be considered a "decent fan."

The most gripping story of the year

What a crazy map. There are so many event triggers it's super cool. A big concern for a map like this is the amount of micro between building your civ up, moving multiple different heroes to different places, and holding off enemy armies makes it a lot to put together. Making one of the factions handle the fellowship would probably be a good idea. Probably dwarves, it looks like dwarves have mostly one enemy to focus. I may be wrong. But it seems like there's wayy too much for a gondor player to do at first look. This is just a suggestion, putting the fellowship on one person also means they move together. As the characters meet trigger points and sort of 'complete' their part of the journey they can return to parent factions. Like when Pippin declares for Rohan, give him a buff and transfer him to Rohan if that is possible. If Boromir lives transfer him to Gondor when he returns, same with Aragorn. I don't make maps these just seemed like fair suggestions. I love lotr and this is super insane. There's just so much going on its wild.

Jesus this looks like an interesting one but there's so freaking much going on I'd get completely overwhelmed I feel. Call it "skill issue" or whatever but I never do well with games or scenarios having 20 different things going at once.

Video idea: make a quiz that tells you which civilisation best suits your playstyle. Similar to sotl's, just for fun :)

VIPER PLAY LOTR

I checked this map out a bit myself. Its a really cool scenario, and it is obvious that the creators put a lot of work into the map. My main issue is that it all seems waaaaaaaay too complicated. The number of different possible interactions and quests within the game is crazy, and its difficult to understand what you should be trying to do without studying your specific civilization for several hours before you play, let alone understand the 7 other civs. There is literally a 51 page word document and a 21 page PDF in their discord that just explains what all the different units do, and how to unlock them. Take what i say with a grain of salt, but it seems like too much. Still definitely check it out if you're a LOTR fan - the design of the physical map itself is really neat and clearly had a lot of good thought put into it.

Honestly, the Devs need to pick up on this. I would not mind a payed DLC with a LOTR campaign. Like, the groundwork is already there. Slap in the Story of the Films and add proper models for the units and buildings and you would have a grand campaign that I bet people would be eager to play. I always wonder why those big companies do not think of those opportunities when looking at great fan made mods for existing great games. Take Game of Thrones in CK2 or Star Trek and Warhammer 40K in Stellaris. You got an amazing game that's already established, go get some bucks by adding your franchise into that, why not?!

this map looks so dope but it seems like a nightmare for a noob like myself with all the macros

Fun to watch, but I'm kinda glad I'm not the one playing, as it looks like a mess to deal with and I can see why many people say this isn't an approachable scenario to play due to how much stuff you need to already know how to do, on top of all the rest of the regular game stuff, you basically had to have the creator hold your hand through the whole thing... Could maybe do with scaling back the eco aspects and automate some troop spawning with triggers, i.e. you get a trickle of troops (or waves of them) automatically after meeting some quest conditions, and removing the ability to produce most regular units at production buildings (especially the ones that end up just becoming irrelevant later on and a noob trap to keep producing) to reduce the amount of stuff the player needs to worry about. I feel like the fun of the interesting quest objectives, hero characters, and great overall map design just get lost in the chaos of the arbitrary buffs coming out of nowhere, and how what is currently your best units available to make and which specific locations you can make them at changes all the time. Much of the purpose of a lot of the hero units seems wasted, as for many of them it was basically to make them sit back somewhere safe and make sure they don't die, which is kinda boring imo. Maybe if they could come back after some condition is met, or if were re-trainable but had a super long train time/cost a ton of res, it would make using them to fight an option that the player can weigh up (vs keeping them safe for the passive buffs, which just seem always like a better idea), especially when you are pop capped and floating res they seem like they would be a very population efficient unit to be worth using if they could be brought back. Overall it just seems like there is just way too much going on (for an initial impression at least) and I can see why there is a perception of the community around this scenario being a bunch of sweats with low tolerance for mistakes.
