To check to see if a melon is ready you should check the tendril that is right above. You should really not pat it as it will cause it to split or fall off
how it works or at least how i do it if it ends up on the neighbors side its theirs or if they ask for it ill give them it. like i have blackberries that are quite large and they just picked the ones on their side and i told them they are more than welcome to it
