Finally, a food guide made by someone who loves food! Forget the guide for tourists, these vlogs are a good guide for Spaniards as well. By the way, to serving young red wine a bit chilly (14/15 C)l we call it in Spain “darle un susto”, meaning to give the wine a “little fright” 😉 Congratulations James, excellent foodie videos.
OK, I've watched quite a few similar reviews. This is far and away the very best. Nice to get away from the old town ... I'd visited Gros in April 2018 and visited 3 of your choices. Going back in April 2019 and will do the other 6 - thanks! Great to see an emphasis on the food with some helpful explanations and mention of the wines also. Beautifully made pintxo video - thank you.
At home in Amsterdam, recovering from a small burnout while enjoying all your youtube fiestas. As a Spain & Spainfood lover I can’t get enough of this :-) (and getting hungry, yesterday I made some fresh Gazpacho👌🏼) Tnx & keep up the good work!
I am glad you have these reruns. I enjoy them remeniscent of my 1971 trip for 6 months with my mom & I FELL IN LOVE WITH SALUSTIANO MARTINEZ IN MADRID. NOW I AM SO SAD I DID NOT STAY...😪 He is wounderful💞😘
Thanks for the video! Going to San sebastian for the first time in a couple weeks, this is getting me excited (and hungry). Will definitely be trying some of these spots
Hi James I am new to your vlogs and love it. Me and my wife will be in Barcelona in September 2019 for a week and looking forward to book a tour . Andrew from Townsville, Australia
loved the blood sausage with the egg yolk; but I chuckled when you ate the gilda and cured tuna!! Missed this video when uploaded so was a treat to watch - I try to watch all your videos.... gracias Tony
Wow what an amazing video! Family and I all drooling here thinking when and how can get get to San Sebastian...simply for the food!! :-)... As always love your passion and love how you dont mind being "messy" on camera! :-) We are off to Spain soon with "una copa de ribera" and now "una copa de rioja crianza" practiced and ready to say once off the plane!!!:-) Muchisimas gracias James &Co.
Thanks for another wonderful video. Have visited Spain 9 times since 2003, but this December, we will finally spend a week in Bilbao and Sebastian before heading "home" to Madrid. Gros looks to be just across Puente De Santa Catalina. Looking forward to it.
Fantastic that you're heading to San Sebastian. Yeah, Gros is just over the bridge. Also, stay tuned to our Devour Tours RU-vid channel as we have a few San Sebastian videos coming out there soon too!
You eating the Gilda on steroids was awesome! I had a great time in San Sebastian, particularly in the Gros neighborhood, so this was fun to watch and reminisce. Thanks, James!
Haha - "awesome". I'm sure there's a few people who were grossed out. But hey - that's part of the fun of eating pintxos. Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for the comment!
Excellent content James, the pintxos of the Basque Country are the equivalent of the tapas in other areas of Spain, meanwhile in the RIO DE LA PLATA, they call then bocadillos (basically mouth-sized snacks) probably not as fancy or elaborate as the tapas or pintxos, the bocadillos "etmology" or "naming" I think originates in Galicia? I heard someone mention this, that a Gallego, owner of a "boliche" (or a bar) it was either Uruguay or Argentina, used to cook-up a storm, in the boliche, making snack-sized plates, and not wanting to call them "tapas" or "pintxos", as that would refer back "to the Old Country", he called them "bocadillos" - or in Aussie slang called - "finger foods"
It would be amazing to take you on a pintxo crawl to them. What's also wonderful is that if you take babies into busy bars in Spain, you don't get arrested. Win win!
I’m going to SS for the first time in a few weeks. Went to Pamplona last year which was much better than I expected. The pintos were great. Looking forward to the Ss versions
Hola!! Soy de San Sebastián. Si vienes otra vez a esta ciudad, tienes que ir a LA MEJILLONERA y pedir unas Patatas Bravas. Un saludo grande desde San Sebastián!!!!
I mentioned the other day that I lived in San Sebastian. In fact I was over the river (smelly in those days thanks to a paper mill upstream, now closed) in Gros. My students therefore called me a Grosero. (Ask your good lady what that means). I knew some of these bars back then though often they limited themselves to a rather dull menu turistico. Great to see the expansion into Pintxos. Thanks for the insight. Keep up the good work!
Hi James, If you want to speak about Tapas you should go to Leon, the best place in Spain to go "de tapas", nominated this year as the best Tapas city in Spain, you will be surpresided and also it is amazing cith to visit. Best
Love that you showed a different pintxo crawl! Added to my future trips 2 Spain! Got to make a tapa crawl of Burgos, Cuenca and Leon! Also, you should explore the Pastelerias for those of us that love sweets. I really miss my Spanish pastries😔
hi guys, a quick Spanish word question.. as you finish your tortilla & spicy pintxo & leave the bar (6:28) you say "gracias por la tortilla ***** and then the last word which I can't quite pronounce or spell but I hear all the time in Spain in response to when someone else says adios or nos vemos etc.., it sounds like ...agorr. What is that word please ? - it's been driving me crazy...!
Hey - just came across your vlogs- great, super jealous, we came to San Sebastián a couple of years ago, did the foodie tour which was great - we will definitely try and catch up with you on yours !
Love the videos but on future videos do you think you could give us more of sense of where you are. I'm not saying that you need a map all the time but briefly showing where the area is and more of an outside shot of the bar or restaurant and the surrounding area. Thanks
Totally agree. A street name and address listed in 'Show more' section. I really like Jim's sharing the Catalan language. Once I hear the words pronounced I try to phonetically write them and say them. Maybe showing more chalk boards in each bar with the menu and talking a bit about key words to learn.Strangely even seeing a 'receipt' helps to get an idea on how much an evening of bar hopping will cost. Many Thanks Mr. Blick
I also prefer basque cider, it gas a better refreshing punch! I brought a bottle to Madrid after my last stay in late August and early September. I spent many weeks there every year, the Basque country is amazing at the coast and in the interior.
Let my compliment you right off the bat on one thing, most folks that host video series involving food have the bad habit of sampling piping hot food fresh out of the kitchen. They invariably wind up honking it back up into their hand or they wave both hands over their mouth as they agonize in pain. You're more sensible and don't commit these types of impulsive errors. I also realize that it's difficult to eat bar food in a polite manner so you've got no choice but to scarf it down like a dog sometimes. I don't mind though, it's how the locals do it anyway , right ?
Hi James and Yoli! Other than San Sebastián, do you have any videos of Cantabria and Asturias? We’re going in September and were hoping you had some suggestions for restaurants!
The Torrija its tipycal from Seville. Its a Holy Week desert. Love you like spanish food! For me its the best in the world. Mexican second place and indian thirth.
Hey James, I recently found your channel and your videos seem to be very informative with great quality, especially for a channel your size! I will be around Barcelona/Valencia for the first time in a few months, and I was hoping to stop in either Mallorca or Menorca for a few days. Between taking a plane and a ferry, do you have an opinion on which mode of transportation would be more efficient, or which of the two most locals opt for? Thanks!
Hey, to be honest, I think most locals would take the boat. But I'm sure it's a mix. Either way, I think the boat sounds a little more fun than going to an airport and getting on a plane. Though in a few months it could be a little chilly. Either way - I'd opt for the boat. Let me know how it goes. And I'm glad you like the channel. Spread the word - let's make this channel bigger :)
I booked the San Sebastian tour. Really looking forward to Hidalgo 56's Blood Sausage Volcano (either on your tour or on my own). Great video and super helpful.
Hello James .. I was laughing when you said pintxo because I'm from Peru and the sound of pintxo means "polla" in peruvian spanish slang.. sorry man I couldn't avoid sharing this naughty info.. I love your videos keep up!
We never eat tomato from the plate with the hands like you did;we use forks for that. We just hold with our hands pintxos with a base of bread which are easy to hold and eat.
Muy bueno el canal. Buena descripción de los platos. Sin duda u b a buena guía para quien visite España. ¿Para cuándo una vuelta por el bulevar de la sidra en Oviedo? Os gustará
Great channel James, will definitely recommend your company to anyone going on holiday who might enjoy a foodie tour! I’m moving to San Sebastian next week to live there for a year, any quick tips for an Englishman with passable Spanish and dire cultural knowledge?
Hi mate! Thanks so much for the offer of mentioning us to those heading to Spain. And that's very exciting that you're moving to San Sebastian! You're going to eat like a king! To get a handle on Spain, I suggest checking out the books in my Amazon recommended reading list here: amzn.to/2ng6ihk - some great books there that will help you figure out this amazing country. And for the language.... that's a tough one. Bit by by. Check out some language learning online , as well as this vid I made with my wife: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rsxaek7BDro.html&t - enjoy your time in Spain!
How do you and Yoli stay so slim? I am hoping it's all the walking, which I intend to do when I arrive in Spain next week. I am enjoying ALL your videos...Thank you...
