Drives me crazy watching him fight a salmon like that. Adjust drag and keep your hands off the line. Bad habit that needs to be kicked.

Exactly. If the drag is set properly the first time, you should never have to manually peel line like that and give the fish slack.

drives me nuts too.. and why do you need to adjust your drag like 10 times mid-fight?
@oldschoolhawking8191
@oldschoolhawking8191 4 года назад
Adjusting the drag during a fight isn't that uncommon, you have it fairly tight at the beginning and as a fish gets closer, you can loosen it up for that big fight at the end. As far as stripping drag off while he's bringing it in, I rarely do that. OSH :-)
@Coastodian

Can you tell me why you often hand pull out line, then reel it back in right after? If you set the drag correctly, the fish can take as needed and you can keep the line taught.

Adam! See? your sacrifices to Poseidon, The Kraken, and various Mermaids, paid off! I have to ask, is it nervous habit to strip line back to the fish, or is there a specific reason? I do agree with Mark below, I don’t get too worked up about barbless hooks. I’ve fished them for so long.
@m.t.4338
@m.t.4338 4 года назад
Adam why do you give line after you have hooked them?
@kylogged
@kylogged 4 года назад
He’s not, that’s just the drag. It’s important to set the drag lighter than the weight of the line. If the drag wasn’t set the line would break. Better have to reel in some extra line than lose a fish. The line is going off like that because there is pressure on the reel. Hope I cleared that up. If you need more information feel free to ask me

Congrats on your salmon and the monkey off your back. Now can we concentrate on setting the drag properly and letting the fish do the work of unspooling your line? That is the point of having variable drag, which countless others have been saying. None of us are perfect. They are more experienced than I with saltwater fishing, but I know the basics and have been taught well. Please use their comments to better your game and increase your fish count. Otherwise you are handicapping yourself for no reason.
@Eric-zs6rd
@Eric-zs6rd 4 года назад
You're fishing shallow if you're getting birds. What kind of salmon were you going for? Cohos and pinks are the only ones that will be that shallow and honestly only when they're already pretty stacked up. Also don't know why you keep pulling out line and speeding up when a fish hits? Maintain speed and just reel it in.

Can you not buy a reel where yo can properly adjust the drag without manually feeding out line. I can see every once in awhile maybe, but you have a really bad habit. If the drag is set properly and the fish runs, line will feed out. That is why we pay the big bucks for these reels. What ould possibly be your reasoning for not letting the reel do its job?

@kevinstewart7792
@kevinstewart7792 4 года назад
Krazycor W, as a kayak fisherman of 15 years I totally understand it’s rough out there, it’s like putting the difficulty on expert when you add up all the challenges and adrenaline. I missed it the first time but if you watch closely and .25 speed it, you can see that he got lucky as it gets since he did get the hook caught in the net first and then got the fish, that was a miracle since the fish only needed one wiggle or burst at that point and he’s gone... one of the ways to prevent that is to hold the net lower on the pole so you can keep control of the netting in the same hand so if you miss, the excess netting has less of a chance of getting in the hooks... I know the pain and anger of working your butt off only to lose it to a simple mistake... hopefully this helps
