Epic Murray Cod Fishing From My Kayak

The cod were going BONKERS on this trip. Both the Murray cod AND Trout Cod were hitting my lures all over the place. Some days the dishing is just so good. I could do no wrong on this kayak fishing trip.
The Murray cod fishing can become very hit and miss in my area at this time of the year, but on this trip it was all hit. Both species of cod were just really switched on for some reason.

I agree they don't usually fight hard, but whem they are big and angry they can haha I recently saw a video of metery tow a guy down river for a hell of a distance, not only that, he then took him back, to the original snag he came from, before the fish was landed 😅 I think we usually fish heavy for cod because of snags and the possibility, of an absolute behemoth of a cod haha, it can make them feel like they don't fight too hard, but after losing a big one recently myself, i definitely don't underestimate them now... I hooked what was most likely a new PB (current is 83cm), this fish was hooked on a very warm night and he ran a good 100 meters before snapping me off, on 50lb line.... End of the day never underestimate a fish people, i have had many big bass, brick me on a locked drag, running 20lb line.
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing 6 месяцев назад
Thanks mate. I agree about the heavy line. It definitely does take a lot of fight out of the fish. One of the main reasons that I use heavy line is to get more lures back. So many times I have got a lure free just as I expected the line to snap. Had I been using 40lb line instead of 50lb line I would have lost the lure.

@@robbiefishing I completely understand that, cod lures aren't cheap either.... Lost a few over the last few trips, unfortunately they were never coming back, regardless of the line I reckon haha At least it's an excuse to buy a few more hahaha 👍

🤔 I seem to remember more than a lure being taken. A certain Sedona that buckled under itself did not really take it well... Sorry for the memory, but, it seems relevant, and Robbie, of all people, can commiserate. He is the Master of Rod Breakage. i have learned from him (or would have learned, if I had not already known through bitter experience) not to leave rods leaning in car doors (a Wildfish I think), not to Highstick them, not to walk through grass and scrub with them strung and all sorts of other ways to break a rod and NOT GET ANGRY ABOUT IT!!! That is Robbie's magic. He never gets mad about the rod, just shrugs it off and gets on with the job.

Hey Robbie, why use a bait caster over a traditional spinning reel? Curious because I’ve never used a bait caster. Cheers
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing 6 месяцев назад
Hi mate, a baitcaster helps me to cast a lot more accurately. It also allows me to cast faster, meaning more casts overall for the trip and it allows me to cast low and flat, ideal for casting under willow trees, log jams and into tight places. A spinning reel will certainly work well, but I find that a baitcaster is so much better for this type of fishing.
@AndrewFishman
@AndrewFishman 6 месяцев назад
Baitcasters - Allow accuracy in casting but sacrifice distance. The line is pulling the spool, not just free looping off it so energy is spent. Allow heavy lures to be cast with more control as the line is over the rod and is thus more supported rather than dangling under and the line having a much greater degree of free play as the rod flexes. Allow greater control when fighting a hard hitting fish as the line over rod configuration gives a lot less slack on strike and remains true through the fight with less give when the rod flexes, as spinning have with the line suspended under the rod. As the bow forms the line pulls away from the rod, giving line to the fish. Not sure if I am making sense, but string a spinning rod and you will see, when it is flexed and the line is taught, there is a fair bit of play between the blank and the line. More immediate setting of hooks - Again, because there is no sag between rod and line, the strike is immediate and hard. Spinning reels - Allows greater distance, whilst sacrificing accuracy. The line cones of the spool in a cone as it loops around the spool on the way off. This gives a degree of swing to the bait as it flies through the air, which affects the accuracy. However, with no drag other than the friction of the spool lip, the line will fly alot further. Good for bait fishing and soft mouth species where a bit of give in the strike is desirable. As the road loads, for the reasons discussed above, spinning rods are preferable to not rip baits out mouth or hooks through lips. Good for small soft plastics which are fished slowly. THese are a few considerations about which rod to pick up on the day.

@@robbiefishingThe most amazing things are the things we don't understand, like the interactions between organisms we cannot even piece together, yet can spell the down fall of ecosystems if interrupted. That is why I am so conflicted on carp. I cannot see the point of attempting to control them in waterways they have established an equilibrium, but to hear of them making it into Googong Dam and thus the Queanbeyan River and Burra Creek, which hold some of the oldest populations of Australian brown trout, is very troubling and if I catch one there, it is history.

Hi mate, spin rods will work fine, but eventually you will probably want to progress to baitcasters. The cast much more accurately.

@MattFogarty95 6 месяцев назад
@@robbiefishing thanks legend ! I’ve been wanted to give it a go for ages but don’t know where to start 😅
@AndrewFishman
@AndrewFishman 6 месяцев назад
@@MattFogarty95 Start with a good kit. A dodgy reel or an unsuitable rod makes it totally unenjoyable. Choose a weight range you want to target fish in (for example - Golden Perch 3 - 5 kilo, suitable also for trout, redfin, carp, small cod, bream, flathead and other estuary species OR Medium Cod 6 kg - suitable for big goldens, getting a bit heavy for the standard ones big reddies and stuff OR bigger cod 10 - 15 kg won't throw smaller lures well, but handles big lures and fish or biggest 25 kg + Throw a brick, brain a cod is the idea) So, choose your targets. This makes rod selection easier. You know what line you want, so pick a rod within the range required. DO NOT OVERSTRING the rod, i.e put 10 kilo line on a 4 kilo rated rod, that leads to heart ache and broken rods, not more big fish. If you want to fish 10 kilo and 4 kilo, get 2 rods, really is that simple. Alot of more experienced fishos will put heavy line onto a lighter rod and rely on the drag to sort things out, this is dodgy and best avoided until you know what you are really doing. Get a slightly longer rod than the common 5'6. It is easier to cast longer distances, gives better lure control with plastics and swimbaits and just makes life easy when fighting the fish. My shorter rods are reserved for heavily vegetated banks or really heavy divers with a big bib. (Orgee plows being a good example of these). Fast action is my preferred action. Learn to use your thumb to control the spool, not the brakes. Most baitcasters today have excellent braking systems to help assist with preventing overruns and birdsnests. However, learn to use your thumb to feather the spool as it spins to control the line and you will have much better casting habits. Get a reel that allows you to use a rod in your strong hand. A left hander should use the commonly available reels with the Right Hand retrieve setup, a Right handed person should be using a left hand retrieve reel. This allows the person to control the rod with the strong hand and not have to change hands to use the reel. Learn to cast using your wrist, not using any upper arm in the action. Just some things I have picked up

@@fredscheerle7592 The best advice I can give to someone setting out on the baitcaster route is spend a little money on a good rod and a little more on an excellent reel to match it. Nothing ruins a fishing trip more than a bad experience with a baitcaster. You can get away with throwing a hook with bread on it, but you need a good rod and reel to do so. Well, 3 varieties if you wish to include the hybrid 🤣 But, not "all 2 varieties" as if there are only 2 varieties available. Maybe in Robbie's area, but do not discount variant species such as the Mary River Cod (Maccullochella mariensis) and Clarence River cod (M. ikei), and other, allied, goby cod species (blackfish, sleeper cod, gudgeons) There are a range of cod and allies, the Trout and Murray are just the most abundant and widespread. This is why it is important for introductions to be done methodically and without interference. The Murray Cod will likely decimate the Mary cod if established in the same waters.

When you are bait fishing, keep an eye on the belly of the line also. Often a fish will pick up a bait moving toward you and the line will go slack. This is the only indicator that a fish is on your bait until an hour later you check and find you have no bait. If there is a slight tic forward or a bit of movement in the line slackening with no reason (wind, current, rod movement), it is always worth investigating.
