Epic Overlanding in the V6 Amarok across Oman - Saying goodbye to Volkswagen's big bakkie

Oman. A country which truth be told, I knew very little about. What I did know is that is was sparse, dry, mountainous and with a particularly sandy interior. Before the arrival of the Amarok, a Volkwagen would likely not have been your first choice of vehicle for a three day adventure here.
Back in 2018, Volkswagen invited Cars.co.za for a once in a lifetime adventure, and I was lucky to get called up to represent the company. VW was celebrating the latest Amarok, featuring a powerful 190kW V6, which would be arriving in South Africa later that year.
Over three nights we traversed simply epic landscapes, radically steep roads, massive dunes, rocky river beds and delightfully, a natural wadi where we left the cars behind and went for a much needed swim.
Over the course of the extremely hot and brutal trip, we didn't have a single issue with any of the Amaroks in the group. We left feeling very impressed, and with wonderful memories.
The next generation of Amarok will be a Ford Ranger under the skin, and so this is the swan song of the Amarok as we know it. The new generation arrives in South Africa in early 2023.

Quoting your words "The next generation of Amarok will be a Ford Ranger under the skin, and so this is the swan song of the Amarok as we know it. The new generation arrives in South Africa in early 2023."...this just warms my heart 🙂 looking forward to the new Ranger (both 184kw Wildtrack and the 292kw Raptor).

Watching the Amarok on Voetspore really showed off its ability. It's unfortunate that VW didn't give it a major aesthetic overhaul over the last decade. Perhaps it would have helped with sales competition against the Ranger and the Hilux.

My favourite bakkie, would still love to own one used in the future, V6 ofcourse. But the Amarok inspired Ford to develop their own Bi-Turbo and now the V6. I would say VW had something to do with that.
@henrysithole3623
@henrysithole3623 2 года назад
@@f0nte1n yeah but never introduced on Ranger until now that they are in alliance. That V6 diesel in the F-150 only lasted like 3 years because Americans love their petrol trucks. At the end of the day, VW does have a say on their requirements of their product. Hence the new Ranger will have a slightly wider wheel base. This is to enable to fit a pallet between the wheel arches on the tub, which Amarok has always been able too. So yes VW inspired Ford to redevelop the V6 diesel but this time for the Ranger. Because on F-150 it was not as popular as the 3.5 V6 ecoboost petrol.
@howardkerr8174
@howardkerr8174 2 года назад
@@henrysithole3623 Interesting theories about Americans and their trucks...but completely wrong. America has very strict emissions standards for diesel powered vehicles, as strict or slightly stricter than Europe. The price differential between a gas powered pickup truck (bakkie) and a diesel powered truck is quite significant. (Sometimes as much as 5-7% of the asking price of the truck.) Ten years ago, before the stricter emissions standards AND the necessity to add DEF (diesel emissions fluid) to diesel fuel that is currently 25% MORE expensive than petrol, diesel powered pickups were a decent financial proposition...nowadays they are not. Nowadays there are 2 reasons buyers in America choose diesel over petrol trucks: the badge and the massive torque for towing. Ford (probably?) did away with the diesel powered F-150 to concentrate on the electric F-150, which will be a much more sensible proposition. And as far as diesel powered pickups, Americans still buy them but for towing VERY LARGE/HEAVY loads. I wouldn't be surprised if someone develops an electric powered truck to take that portion of the market, too. BTW, a gallon of petrol is currently about $4.60, a gallon of diesel is $5.28 PLUS there is the need to add DEF (prices are EXTREMELY variable for that) every couple of hundred miles.

I have the v6 Amarok and I would like to know what Ford parts will be in the new one. I love mine but at some time it would be replaced. When I heard Ford will be building the new Amarok I was disappointed to say the least and I said to myself that the last Amarok I would buy would be from 2021 and not later.

Please stop saying my car will be a ford ranger,l. Ford has a 3.0 V6 engine which i think is derived from the VW Amarok right?
@mathysdupreez602
@mathysdupreez602 2 года назад
If I dont have it wrong, its the Powerstroke Diesel used (but now discontinued) in the F-150 Stateside. The petrol is Ford’s Ecoboost 3.0 V6. No VW engines in sight.
@mathysdupreez602
@mathysdupreez602 2 года назад
The powerstroke V6 diesel is at heart the same motor used in V6 Land Rover diesels. Should be all good for reliability then…😆

Why would the Amarok be a Ford clone?? Everyone knows how Nissan Merc collaboration went. The Amarok will be a VW with a VW engine built by Ford.
