It is not known what Cleopatra looked like so wtf are you talking about? :p. We have a few depictions on say, coins, of her being rather ugly. She was on the other hand very intelligent and a great speaker.

Cleopatra was either beautiful enough or charming enough to seduce both Caesar and Mark Antony into having relationships with her, so there's that. Plus she was praised as the reincarnation of a goddess, which lends itself to beauty. Just because we don't actually know what she looked like doesn't mean that there aren't written accounts of her being beautiful. Coins were powerful pieces of propaganda back then, and to be female was to be weak. Depictions of her on coins as ugly or masculine were probably falsified in order to convince others that she was a strong ruler. Also, the idea of beauty has changed drastically over the years - many ancient Greek depictions of Aphrodite portray her as what we might today call "fat."

Daft While coins were indeed not meant to accurately depict people, let's not pretend writing back then did either. The best sources would be statues were accuracy was more important than either politics(coins) or romanticism(most writing). My conclusion is that she was pretty damn average. Of course we don't have a picture or anything so fuck if we know :).

Yeah, everything Londronable just said is nonsense. Historians -- Hi there, I'm an actual historian with a concentration on the ancient Middle East -- don't actually have a clue what she looked like. We have a general idea based on some facts (she's a member of the Greek ruling class that controlled Egypt at the time, and not an actual Egyptian, so she likely had olive skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. We know she was around 39 years old when she killed herself. And that's pretty much all we know). What we do know is that the legend of Cleopatra says she was one of the most beautiful women in history. Just like Marilyn Monroe

The height of Elizabeth Taylor's fame actually is later than Marilyn Monroe's fame (Taylor was around prior to about 1960, but she became "Elizabeth Taylor" the superstar, during the 1960s. By then, Monroe had already died.
