@@kofuzi I see. I am a 165-pound casual runner (~30 km per week) and I am considering this shoes vs pegasus 35. Although I love the epic react's design, I still think Peg 35 is a better running shoes, hmm
Tin Pham hey tin. I run about 70-85 miles a week. I own both of the shoes you are suggesting. If you like more of a plush run go with the epic reacts. If you like a more responsive snapping feedback go with the Pegasus 35. However if you can just go for the Pegasus turbo. That zoom x and react combo is perfect for almost any run distance. I use the epic reacts for my training sessions and for the past two years I have ran the nyc marathon and I ran in NIKE zoom vaporfly 4%. Good luck on your decision.
I think that if the pain you are feeling is in your arch, it probably isn't bottoming out. What I have noticed is that the Epic React has a lower, less supportive arch compared to a lot of other Nike shoes. The Pegasus 35, for example, has a higher, firmer, more supportive arch. If your foot isn't as used to running with less arch support over longer miles, this could cause fatigue. The arch of the Epic React is actually part of why I love it so much; it works better with my foot than like the Pegasus 35. The Pegasus 35 arches seem to poke into my feet more when running which causes arch pain probably similar to yours. The Pegasus Turbos don't do this as much because the arches are a bit softer I think. I actually like the Epic React better than the Pegasus Turbos for my long runs. The midfoot/forefoot feels a little better cushioned over my long runs of like 14 miles even though the Pegasus Turbos feel softer. The ZoomX in the Turbos doesn't feel as squishy after 10+ miles and starts to feel packed down. The Pegasus Turbos definitely feel bouncier and softer with basically the same weight, but the Epic React cushioning seems to hold up better. Also note that the Epic Reacts are super durable. Most of the initial wear is cosmetic and slows down. The flyknit is super durable and the midsole holds up really well. I put around 500 miles in my first pair and could have easily ran more in them, but I had a second pair ready.
I'm an old guy who only runs about 30 miles a week. I wore through a Peg 35 and an Epic React before deciding to trying the Tree Runner by Allbirds (completely destroyed at 400 miles/4 months). I can't share my experience with the precision either Cameron or Kofuzi have but you've convinced me to go back and give the Epic React another try. After that I'll come back with a review of my own.
I really enjoy the way that you talk about your running shoes. I like that you're not putting arbitrary numbers in your review to somehow quantify if a shoe is good or bad.
You say they made the mistake to not lower the rubber piece at the top, try to compare it to a new one or a picture. The react has almost no wear. Great video, mine are at 248 km
I have 257 miles on my Nike Epic React flyknits, and I can honestly say they are one of the best values Nike running offers. I run with a rotation of Epic Reacts, Zoom Elites and Zoom Fly's, and I plan on getting 350-400+ miles from the Epic React without any loss in support and responsiveness. And the flyknit looks almost new. Love these.
@@michir6279 the Zoom Fly is a solid fast day tempo shoe but the stiffness does take a few runs to get accustomed to. I recently raced a marathon in the Zoom Fly Flyknit (or Zoom Fly 2.0) and it was very responsive, had my legs feeling fresh late. Would recommend the Zoom Fly Flyknit for anyone who can't race in the Vaporfly.
I was going to say it looks like you're really enjoying the Epic Reacts (based on your last few videos), should've seen this review coming! This look like they've held up really well. I bought my Epic Reacts recently and will be testing them out on a tempo run today - lets see how it goes. Great review as always.
I love these for tempo runs! These are my fast feeling shoes and they do feel weird around 15k or so, like a flattening feeling. For a shorter tempo run, they feel great and make me want to go faster than Pegasus, Shield and Turbo. Have fun! Watch out on wet surfaces, slippery.
I'm sure this was asked multiply times but still - what do you do to retired shoes? Do you wear them casually (not all runners are fit for casual wear, and you only need that much), throw them away, giving away, anything else?
These were my favorite shoes this year until the Zoom Fly, which feel like Reacts but a little bouncier. I feel like they get more hate than they deserve because they're more of an all-purpose shoe and they don't really excel at any type of run. Also, they're doing a limited release of the Hoka Clifton 1, so if you're thinking about trying them now is the time. I know they don't look the best but they're super comfortable and light for longer runs.
Like I mentioned in my IG message to you, after 220 miles, the pop/liveliness seem to have gone, but is still great when it comes to shock absorption. Wonder if anyone else has experienced the same?
My favourite daily runner. Picked up a second pair of Pegasus 35 a couple of weeks ago but almost always pick my Epic Reacts. Think they’re somewhere around 200 miles now and feel as good as new!
What I loved the most about this shoe is not that it is very light weight but how breathability it has. It is not just the flyknit upper but also the React cushioning and little rubber in the outsole helps the Epic React to not "drain" heat from the asphalt. Perfect shoe to use during spring/ summer or for very long runs at the winter where the shoe will not overheat my feet.
Wow!! They look great for 270miles! I retired mine after 170 miles. They were much worse. Of course the running technique will have a major part of the final result of your sole after X miles. Great video again!
Love your reviews and "check-in" reviews. Great insight. I just picked a pair of Epic React in the same colour you have. Btw, Chicago looks so much like Toronto from the distance, almost made me thought you were running in "the 6ix". Cheers Kofuzi!
my wife had a work trip to Toronto that I was going to join her on (and without the kids). unfortunately, it got cancelled. people keep telling me how similar the two cities feel, and I'd love a place that feels like Chicago without some of Chicago's baggage.
Looks good after 270. How’s the bottom of your vapor fly’s look? Mine are getting chewed up, trying to save them for Indy. But ugh I just love running in them.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does anyone know a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I stupidly forgot the password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me
@Torin Ace i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
The Epic React was my favorite trainer until this morning... first run in the Peg 35 Turbo. Wow. Awesome shoe! Now I have to decide between the Zoom Fly Flyknit or Turbo on race day. 10k coming up then half early next year. Zoom Fly Flyknit is so fast. Turbo is super comfortable. Which would you choose?
Mine have 350 miles on them and doing great. Happy you found them again. Think I'll replace mine with new Zoom Fly though. React plus the plate. You've shown that's a winning combo. On another note: Awesome job giving back.
Agreed. I'm thinking of Odyssey React Shield and Zoom Fly FK for winter. The latter for workouts. Not sure React Shield outsole works on snow and ice though. Remains to be seen.
Nike lists it as having a different or special outsole. I recall back on the 33 Pegasus Shield, they treated it somehow with something that made the outsole lugs almost sticky. Maybe it's the same there? I'm getting very curious about the Odyssey Shield.
It's the same here. I rubbed both Epic and Odyssey Shield outsole and the latter is much stickier. I'd go for Peg Shield but standard Peg ride feels so firm and somehow dull after Vaporfly, Epic and Turbo. VF is out of this world. Ran sub 1:36 half PB in them and felt great all along.
Still a great shoe today! Enjoyed V1 and managed to get a pair of V2 from Nike and so happy with them. Much more enjoyable than the Infinity and Invincible and Pegasus 37/38 . Less over engineered.
Great review! I have a 4 shoe rotation (Epic React, Zoom Fly SP, and two pairs of Peg Turbos). It may seem like a travesty but I like my Epic Reacts the most because of their versatility - It's the proverbial "Jack of all Trades, Master of None". My recovery runs are always done in these shoes as the Zoom Fly and Peg Turbos promote a faster foot strike turnover.
I ran in these in 2019 an totally agree. I experienced that same arch pain and also agree that this show doesn't really like fast runs. I'm considering using an insole with a carbon fiber shank plate to help with the arch pain.
I un-retired these today as my invincible run has developed holes in the toe area, which I never had on any other shoe ever. I forgot how good the Reacts feel. Wish I had bought 3 pairs. The invincible 2 always gave me ankle and arch pain.
I have a pair of Epic Reacts with comparable wear. The only issue I had with the upper is that the heel loops frayed where the stitching rubs the heel, they're both hanging by a thread. I agree with about the outsole for overall durability, but the reason there is less on the Epic React is to save weight. Which is why there is more rubber on the less expensive versions.
@@kofuzi My heels get chewed if my sock cut is too low. I now use the Nike performance Cushioned socks. I can't say that I really noticed any benefit from the cushioning underfoot, but the cushioning on the heels tab feels amazing and pairs really well with the Flyknit upper.
So Mike did you ever run longer then 10 miles on the shoe? What was your longest run in the shoe? I do my long run in that Epic react. I do my other runs with the pegasus 35 usually my work horse. Im planning on using the react for a half marathon for this upcoming sunday.
Just used them for a second half marathon and they held up well. Thing is, i trained in them so i put quite a bit of millage on them and I'm only now noticing wear and tear
stay tuned. i've got something planned for them for a video i've already made but will be releasing in the next day or so. and then i'll be throwing them in the wash over the weekend, so there will be another video next week that specifically address the washing machine.
Ha - I have found exactly the same. Initially thought they were too stiff / heavy and relegated them to a casual shoe after just 150 miles. Then bad weather made me drag them out and they seem super springy now. Wondering if casual wear for a bit loosens the foam somehow.
Hey Mike, love your channel! If you can get your hands on it, Hokka did an unannounced re-release of the original One One Clifton 1 (they're up to their 5th iteration now). Would you be interested in reviewing that pair? I currently live in Seattle but ran the Chicago Marathon for my company/non-profit called World Vision to raise money for clean water for the most vulnerable kids. I know you're training for Indy but I'll be back in Chicago for work from 10/31-11/11 if you want to meet up for a run or a meal. Not nearly as fast as you though when it comes to running...keep up the great work!
Hi Kofuzi, I will run half marathon this Sunday and weather forecast might be rainy, I only use epic react on dry conditions, usually 10km run, how will this hold running at rain on race day?
Picked up a pair of Pegasus 34s over the weekend and I ran in them last night...man do I prefer the 34s to the 35s. The 34 toe box is so roomy and so nice! Obviously, just an opinion. I'm actually going back to the store to grab a few more 34s, at $59 they are worth it! I also returned my Vaporfly 4% (weird arch situation and narrowness) last week and my Turbos (did not like the cushioning, too soft for me)...wasn't feeling either shoe, but obviously for some they are amazing.
How much do weigh Kofuzi? Coz the shoe held up pretty well.. using my Odyssey react flyknit 2 Im about 50 miles with no significant wear as of now.. I weigh about 152 pounds on a size 9.
I put in over 500 miles in mine including a marathon near the end (it was my first one and I hadn't realised how quickly the training miles would add up and by the time I did it was too close to the race to buy a fresher pair). They held up great and I'm now on my second pair. I managed to get them recently at a big discount, probably because the Epic React 2s were just about to come out. If you can get them for under £100 they're excellent value.
kofuzi I’ve tried both shoes as well as the Nike Zoom Pegasus 35 Turbo. Out of all of them, the Ultra Boosts are still the most comfortable for me in both leisure and running wise. If it wasn’t for Adidas making Ultra Boost, Nike wouldn’t have to make this new Zoom foam in all of their running shoes. And every new shoe from any company is always compared to Ultra Boost first. Have you tried running them as well?
Mantar Singh for under 2 hours I’m going with UltraBoost. For 2-8 hours, React just gives me way less foot fatigue. The only kinds of tests I do are 8hour days-this is just what I’ve experienced thus far beginning in July 2018.
I'm a more modest 190 miles in - I usually have 3 different brands/models on the go at any one time - averaging about 5:10/km and seem to have a lot less wear towards the heal but roughly the same in the outer mid-foot. But then I'm 80kg :) I do have the impression that, at this stage, there is less cushioning vs new...
@@kofuzi a year later. How long did you run your Zoom Fly for? I had the Zoom Fly for races only because they went bad so quickly. Hoping the Reacts will last longer.
if you retire it, it loooks like a really good casual shoe, and hopefully the responsiveness is still there for casual use. perfect time for this review because theyre currently on sale (~$100 for a pair at nike website) and the peg35 is like $78.
A little obsessed with trainer mileage 🤣 I think you might just like getting new runners dude! Personally I've no idea how many miles my trainers have on them! Enjoy your vids though man 👍
I may have done more in mine but mione are pretty beat now, but I must say still have plenty of life left in them, but ultimately in much better shape by comparison to adidas Ultraboost which are much expensive and wear really quick
I really wanted to love these shoes, but my arch insoles I use just made the foot sit so high I was getting massive heel slip. It always seems the fly knit uppers have such shallow heel cups.
Yeah, I use The Super Feet Orange insole. I have pretty high arches. The insole has been a game charger for me across my rotation of shoes, but seems to be too much of interior stack height with that fly knit.
They feel great for slower pace for sure and I'm a very slow runner (talking about 11:40 min/mile for any easy runs). Still not able to do faster workouts in them.
the advertising hype was a bit hyperbolic (akin to Under Armour saying the Hovr Infinite will let you run "millions of miles"), so i'd say no. but it's quite enjoyable for running.
i mention my paces for the sake of transparency so people can know what i'm doing. but when i mention speed in shoe reviews, i generally feel like things that are good for "fast days" or good for "slow days" comes down to relative effort.
You know, I hadn't heard of this 500 mile thing until very recently. I wish I could have seen it at the time it was originally aired. Because it just reminds me of the old Folders Crystals commercials.
I've never run in the Zoom streak. But the answer is it depends on the distance (and I assume you mean for racing or race pace days). I'd consider zoom streak for 5k and under.
Never tried the Zoom Fly, but I have the Zoom Flyknit Streak, and they’re amazing for race day! They really push you forward to go faster. Planning on buying the Epic Reacts for long runs and training runs though.
Those are two totally different shoes, with GT being stability versus Epic Reacts being neutral - figure out what your running gait is like at a running store and they should be able to recommend one over the other
I wish I never wasted money on the epic reacts. Apart the fact they kill my heels after half an hour of wearing, react has let me down. Its a gimmick. I fell for the hype like most people but others lie to themselves its great
i felt similarly to you after about 100 miles, and i'm on record as such in my first impressions video, my 100 miles video, in videos discussing the zoom fly sp and the zoom fly flyknit, and in hundreds of comments across youtube. but this shoe is confusing. for me, it seems to be getting better with age somehow? if you follow me on IG or strava, you can see what shoes I wear every day, even when I'm not running in a shoe for the purpose of a review. I've been reaching for these a lot lately.
well, I've gotten a lot more listful in the literal 3 years since this video was published. I invite you to try a more recent review and let me know if that's true. or perhaps I am hopelessly listless
