Noah Lyles ran a pedestrian (by his standards) 19.80 for the win in Zurich, just ahead of USA teammate Erriyon Knighton's 19.87 to keep his two year 200m unbeaten streak alive.
Fresh off a three-gold-medal haul at the 2023 World Athletics Championships,
Noah Lyles held off a strong challenge from American teammate Erriyon Knighton to win the men's 200meter last Thursday (31 August 2023) at the Diamond League in Zurich.
Lyles, racing in his signature event where he is a three-time World champion and Olympic bronze medallist, sprinted to a 19.80, just ahead of Knighton's 19.87.
The duo were neck-and-neck, running next to one another. with Lyles in lane six and Knighton in seven.
Knighton briefly led, but Lyles shut down the 19-year-old in the final stretch.
"It is just a race, it is business as usual," Lyles said afterward.
"Everybody wants to beat me and everybody wants the cake and the crown, but I am not giving it to them.
Today, we did not have perfect conditions, it was pretty cold. But a win is a win."
Since missing out on gold at Tokyo 2020, Lyles has become the standard-bearer in the event, taking world titles in 2022 and 2023.
At the recent Worlds in Budapest, he completed a historic triple, taking gold in the 100meter and the 4 by 100meter relay, in addition to his 200meter triumph.
"Of course, a fast time is always wanted, but it has been a great season.
And I guess winning three gold medals is better than getting the American record.
I am not going to lie, I am pretty tired," admitted Lyles.
"It was only a short time after the World Championships."
Knighton, for his part, has also reached the 200meter Worlds podium each of the last two years.
He was the bronze medallist in 2022 and took silver days ago at the 2023 global event.
At Tokyo 2020, he finished just outside of the medals in fourth place at just 17 years of age.
Team Great Britains's Zharnel Hughes was third at 19.94.
Andre de Grasse, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, finished fifth in the event, clocking a 20.26 time.
