Epic Solo Jeep Camping & Fishing Adventure

Workshop to Wilderness

This video documents a couple of days of a multi day solo trip camping in my Jeep Cherokee XJ Overland Build. I'm driving, exploring and fishing a small river in the north of the country. The river runs for many miles but I just follow a small section in this video.
The start of summer has been very wet and windy and today is no exception. Fortunately the wind dies down and the tracks are no issue.
I hope you enjoy this segment of my excursion and thanks for watching.

Your videos are just the best outdoor adventures available on the 'tube' right now, long, detailed, slow, heavily narrated, music-less ( very important) , keep them coming, Just bought an Ecoflow combo wave2 + delta2, haven't received it yet, can't wait to try it for our next family trip.
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
Thank you, glad you enjoy them and appreciate the comment. The drone has made them much easier and more importantly natural to film. I think that's the important thing for me, it's not forced or too much effort. The editing is the only real time consumer, but that's because of my computer, so it's no big deal. Ah fantastic, that's a beast of a powerbank. Should keep you all going for a long time. The 2 series is very good and battery technology is much better 👌

@@WorkshoptoWilderness I could've kept adding compliments because there's a couple of other things that appeal to me in what you do, ... Like for example , you work in your "crappy little garage" ( hilarious) I do appreciate the work First on the jeep : the patience, dedication detailing etc..., Second. everything you have to do for filming , positioning the camera so we can see while you can talk to us, giving us a good long explanation about your train of thought while cramed underneath the Jeep, and all of this alone!!! Your a beast! I sure wasn't that valiant when I was your age....

Great trip again, gives me lots of food for thought and ideas for my own overland build in the future. Glad you managed to avoid the Bigfoot, I don't even want to think how much that aubergine 🍆 might've hurt if he managed to hide it under your mattress. Imagine the back ache in the morning 😖 As for those pesky pike, try to fish closer to the rapids, either the top just before it gets more... rapid? 🤔 or the tailout after the rapids. Sides of the current and calm sides of rocks even in the rapids usually hold grayling and trout. Pike tend to stay in the calmer pools. As for lures, try Bete Lotto spinners if you haven't yet, a staple in a Lapland lure box. Black, orange or pink with dots or stripes are great. Daiwa Duckfin jigs, 5 or 7cm, trout colour. Good for getting deeper into holes and work a treat for grayling and perch. Salmo Hornet wobblers too, work both for casting and trolling.. And, none of those spin your line. I've messed up lines in matter of hours when the river adds even more twist to a spinner. Also, loving the fact you're picking up Swedish so well. You're doing much better than my English fiancé with Finnish 😂
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
My Swedish isn't fantastic but I get by. I need to pick up duel lingo again to be honest. Thanks for the tips on the lures. My tackle box is very small (no pun intended). I do need some more lures though as there looking worse for wear. I'm enjoying fly fishing though, some nice trout and grayling over the summer, although I absolutely don't mind perch for eating either. Anyway appreciate you watching and hope the build ideas come to fruition
@Antti_Iltanen
@Antti_Iltanen Год назад
@@WorkshoptoWilderness I hope so too. 💪🛻🏕️ I've been building my "tackle box" since late 80's, it's changed a lot over the years and now I have a few fully stuffed, pocketable, little boxes for going up to rivers, couple of bigger boxes for trolling mainly for zander, those fit in my backpack. For pike I usually carry a small IKEA bag as I mainly fish for it off (someone else's) boat. And my pike lures nowadays are mainly +20cm rubbers, so they take a lot of space. I have an old fly rod I picked up few years back. Still haven't got around to it. I wanted really bad to get into fly fishing as a kid but my parents didn't like the idea. I did manage to get some marabou feather and some other bits and bobs and was tying makeshift leeches with a hook on long pliers I was holding up to a table with my knee 😅 Once I manage to move back up to Lapland, I promise to finally get into it. It's a great way to spend a cold winter evening, working in the garage or tying flies for the upcoming summer. 🙏

I just have mine across the back seat. Ivo has a rod holder. I will build an external lockable rod holder eventually. I don't actually control the drone and drive or I would already be dead. It has object recognition software and obstacle avoidance software so I just tell it to follow my jeep or Ivo and it will just fly with us up to 35kmph. Thanks for watching!

Hey! It's a hanger that came with the set. It's an msr reactor stove and the hanger is designed for it. I'm not sure if jetboil have one but I'm sure it could be adapted or made.

RU-vid is another part of it also, I earn money from my videos although not enough for it to be anything serious. Its just extra along side other work. All together it's fairly varied and good fun, I like it. I've been offered some interesting permanent contracts while I've been here but as of yet I haven't taken anything because I enjoy being self employed, as I have been for the last 12 years.

The platform above the alubox use to be lower and those corners contacted it so I drilled the rivits and took them off. I should put them back on now really now that the platform is higher.

Mike, I am glad to see you outdoors again. I would like to see you take your Jeep Cherokee over the rocks in the beginning, just to see how the solar panels do with the vibration?? I understand that the pike are small, but could you not still cook them? Thanks again for the great video......
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
The Pike taste awful to be honest. Worse in the summer anyway as the slime they produce makes them more tricky to prep. I have eaten Pike several times in a few ways, its not the best fish for eating. Perch are pretty good, especially when smoked, trout would be preferable. There wont be many vibrations on the rocks because I would be driving so slow, just crawling. The gravel roads and pot holes are more of a test given you hit them at speed and it shakes the whole car. I will keep testing them and If I see a rocky trail I will try it, but I think they are on there for good. Thanks for the comment and for watching!

@@WorkshoptoWilderness Ok, how often have you used the solar system?? If you travel all day in the woods, and get to camp with just a few hours of daylight. Is it worth the the money and time? Still, very curious. Thanks again, great to see you outdoors.

@@currysmith9241 Its used on every outing currently. I have used it on four camps (only one filmed) and also a recent day trip to locate some escaped horses. Its functioned really well on sunny days and power still comes in when cloudy but obviously much less. In the winter I have no clue how it will perform, and in the dead of winter when we have four hours of low light I cant imagine them doing too much. It does mean we can stay in one place for as long as we like because the power in is much more than the power out (if sunny)

I want to add a roof top tent to my xj but I like wheeling and crawling I worried the tent will hinder it’s performance Offroad. What have you found?
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
If you mainly crawl and your off camber a lot then you will see a difference although the severity of that depends on the tent you choose. There are some extremely light weight tents on the market, couple that with two load bars for mounting and you wouldn't compromise the jeeps rollover angle. My tent is about 70kg spread across the top equally. Its heavy in my opinion but light in the tent world, apparently. My jeep can still happily sit at 45 degrees and not topple but it's certainly not as stable as without the tent. Obviously most of the weight is down low but still the tent makes a big difference in that tipping point and how fast you enter and exit those angles.

What motor is in this jeep if you have a video please let me know
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 5 месяцев назад
Its a 2.5l marine diesel engine. They came as standard in the euro exports. There pretty solid engines and you can make decent power and torque out of them if you tube them up and upgrade the heads. The original heads and gaskets are bad though so they do need changing if you want reliability. I have lots of build videos on it as done a great deal to mine to get it yo about 380nm. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kQ5Vl6pTJUU.html&pp=gAQBiAQB

Take a look at BMW 57 engines. It's probably one of the best diesel engines ever made. They sell an adapter kit for the ax15 and AW4 transmission. Also, a plug-in ecu kit that handles all the electronics. It's a popular swap, and you can get over 550nm orlf torque

What motor is under the hood
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 6 месяцев назад
Its a 4 cyl marine diesel engine. 425 OHV. It came standard in Europe with the XJ's. They are not that good stock and underpowered, they can also have issues with the head cracking and original shitty head gasket (mostly due to inadequate cooling). I've swapped the head to an AMC one along with a ML gasket. I've also swapped to a mechanical VE pump, which i've tuned and paired with a GT series turbo, manifold and a different intake manifold. Also a small but efficient intercooler with solid piping. It makes somewhere near 160hp now with around 400nm. Its somewhere around there away as my friend has dyno'ed his and I am yet to do mine. The only downside of tuning is terrible fuel economy. When I first bought it it did 36mpg, now its probabaly 20 or less, but it runs great and pulls like a train. Anyway, life story over, thanks for watching.

Might be worth getting an electric stove with the solar panels. May also be worth testing the citronellal based insect repellants for efficacy - much better than putting that shite DEET all over your kid's skin
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
I don't think I would ever use Deet on myself or my kids, not good. I tend to use a deet free one and just use it on clothes and hats. Max is too young for that also. I've looked into electric stoves but the power usage is pretty high, also not something I could use in winter. A bigger battery I think!
