Daytime temps are rising above 0c, the snow is round 1 meter deep and its getting heavy so wheeling conditions are tough. I expected a lot of digging, low tire pressures and possibly chains but a set of Maxtrax would have been a good investment. Maybe next time! I set out in the Jeep Cherokee XJ Diesel to find a winter camping location in the wilderness and test out my winter gear. I have modified the ARB 2500x2500 Awning Room and added a Diesel Heater to adapt it for winter conditions. In this video you join me on a little 4wd adventure, winter wheeling and exploring some of the forest roads in Northern Sweden where I test out my gear and camp out in the mountains. Thanks for watching

@@WorkshoptoWilderness thats great what is the diesl out of i see it looks like it said jeep ; looks to fit and run great..i like the set up did u lock the front yet dana 30s are greatly under estamated it keeps the rig nimbal lite less chance of breaking things its worth trussing and upgrading. I wheeled with a high pinion 30f/35r bone stock some of the craziest overland swamp trails and out wheeled most bigger badder builds cause they were to heavy and too heavy on the throttle..im preping for a complete front to back overhaul she's an old veteran ready for upgrades.. lookin forward to more awsome vids safe travels from ur new cherokee buddy "Rooster" .. our swamp apes send there greatings..

Hey Rooster, thanks for watching. The diesel is the factory export engine the xj came with in Europe. It's a 2.5l, although I've almost doubled the hp on mine to date. It's a decent motor despite what some say. It just needs a few upgrades to make it reach its potential. To date, I've trussed , sleeved, and gusseted the d30. I have a locker in the workshop, but I'm yet to fit it. I will try and fit it before the snow falls. What axles or overhauling will you do? Sounds awesome 👌 Thanks for watching

Thanks for tuning in and for watching! You have some real treasures then in terms of XJ's. I've got a 1990 4.0 and this 1999 2.5 diesel export. I've had the diesel for 10 years and the 4.0 for 1 year. I love cherokees and hope to drive them for the rest of my life. A big hello from Northern Sweden!
@insaynbcr

A trick Iearned years ago for putting on chains is to cut your self a small block of wood that you can drive up on and is tall enough to to get the tire above the surface. Before you drive up on the block, lay your chains out with the block set in between two of the horizonal tread chains. Drive up on the block and go about installing the chains. It give you enough slack under the tire to freely wiggle the chains into place as needed.

A couple of short pieces of 4" pvc pipe and a couple of T's with a 2" branch may help distribute the heat at different levels so you have discharge near the ground at low settings. The key is short pieces so they don't overload storage. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks

That snow was quite deep! Knowing when to bail is half the battle sometimes, and it really seems like you found a nice quiet spot for setup for the night. It’s been cool seeing you test new camping setups and try to think and experiment in preparation for family camping. I can relate! I think I bit off a bit more than I could handle with that first trail. Too much stress on the Jeep. Family camping is probably the toughest challenge i've had yet. I really want to travel and take them around Europe from time to time covid allowing but its hard to find a setup that works. Its a decent size I think, certainly nice to hang out in change in. With a manual transmission in snow like that you need to do the "rocking" trick as soon as you get stuck. Never fully let the clutch out and allow wheels to spin. Simply let the tire rock and inch forward without spinning, and then back wards. Never letting the tire spin until you have a good 1-3' long patted down flat spot and then you can go for it lol
@lol123321123321
@lol123321123321 Год назад
Ideally for snow like that you want to float, not chug through and hit bottom. That's the 40"+ size tire type of snow at 1-3psi
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness Год назад
Thanks for the tips, I will give it a try next time we have some good snow. I've got some bead locks now with a fairly good winter tire that I let down to about 4psi so it should make for some better floatation. I've also regarded to 4.88 so I should be able to crawl slower. Anyway thanks again!

I'd recommend trying to make a return air hose for the diesel heater with a Y join on it. If you can have say 70/30 split of return air from inside the awning room and 30% outdoor air which will have super low relative humidity it would likely take care of the moisture issue and run the heater more efficiently. Would just have to come up with a creative way of controlling the flow of outside air coming into the Y splitter.

And have you considered piping the warm air into the awning lower down so that the heat reaches people before rising to the ceiling? Cheers!
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 3 года назад
Thanks mate, It was good fun to film. Ever since I had issues with the ignition barrel the keys can come out and the engine will still run. Perhaps its wear or maybe just poor design. Pumping the heat lower down is certainly a better solution. It just requires a longer insulated duct that can drop down and run into the vent at the side. I will certain do that but I just need a better duct. Thanks again for watching and for comments on the videography!

I've got a video on how to build it if you take a look on the channel page. I could send a link but I'm on my phone at work. Its a small diesel heater. They are quite efficient and use very little fuel and produce a lot of heat. My setup in this video is pretty crap because the heater is pushing heat into the top and taking cold air from outside. This is good for low condensation but bad for warmth. It's better if it recirculated the air from the tent.

@@benbroccoli89 I personally really like the awning for overlanding. You could drop the weight and just string up a tarp as an outdoor cover but the awning is faster to setup and its pretty tough in the wind which I like. Its nice to have an outdoor space out of rain or sun to sit, eat or relax. The awning room is kind of essential for us here due to the mosquitos. Having a place to just be away from flies and have the windows open in the summer is really nice. As much as I've bivi camped and put up with bugs for years, enduring discomfort wears me down over longer trips. I would personally recommend an awning as they re out the way most of the time until you need them.

I have to give you a bit of a hard time about your “glamping” setup..:) i remember your videos from back in the day where you went out with a little backpack and a fixed blade knife. Great video man, thanks for the upload. Looking forward to some hunting videos this summer..:)

I expect many who migrate over from the other channel will. Its a shame really but I guess its to be expected given I've put myself online for ten plus years. I still bivi camp, hike, fish and make fires most weeks but filming these things hasn't been a priority and it's more of a lifestyle rather than a video worthy event that would almost rob the simplicity of it all. Anyway I'm sure you get it and I know your just joking, I guess I'm just tired of the expectation. Thanks for watching.

Gave you the like because you actually prepared the bird you accidentally killed instead of burying it or something

A wabbit wan out in front of my Triumph Bonneville and was instantly killed. I threw him over the handlebars, brought him home & made a stew. I love free food!

What diff-locks are your running? Proper lockers or the standard diff-slip? Makes a big difference in the Swedish snow imho as the "automatic" ones are set for better traction.

Open diff at the front and a standard limited slip at the back. Nothing special as of yet.

Lmao! bro you buried it immediately. You have a standard transmission there's no excuse for that. Next time take it slow on approach and when your tries start to slip fuck the clutch. That is to say use the clutch amd light throttle to rock the truck back and forth until you gain traction again. That's snow wheeling 101, throttle is your enemy. Any time your tire slips for any amount of time, that tire is digging.

На 27:15 минуте,вы положили большой ящик с инструментами под сиденье. Но там почти нет места! покажите как изменили нишу под задним сиденьем,мне тоже так надо!

you def need a bigger motor , from the sound it def seam you are lacking hours power , need to find a 5.9 Cummings
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 3 года назад
I think its ideal but it all depends on what line of life you come from. 160hp. 400 Plus nm torque, 27 to 31mpg is basically perfect for a 2 ton fully loaded Jeep for long range touring, offroad work and camping. A 5.9 is just far too big for this small jeep, thirsty and too expensive. I for one need to regear which will help put me back inline with where I need to be power wise but for now she's got plenty of power and I have no complaints, after all its me in the driver seat, not you. Thanks for watching.
